Chapter 230: Chapter 129: The Self-Cultivation of an Undercover Agent_2
Wayne stowed the map in his bosom, while Mona didn’t utter a word, showing no curiosity nor making inquiries.
Seeing her behave this way, Wayne was very pleased and said, "Throw all the suitcases in, not a single one left behind. Let’s head back early tonight; I plan to spend the night at your place."
Understood, we’ll talk when we get home.
Mona obediently followed orders, coming before the Alchemy Array to throw each suitcase into the gaping maw of red lips.
Five minutes later, Jeliff, clad all in black, stepped through the teleportation portal. His face looked terrible, clearly discontent with the compliance of the new recruits to the whims of the Thousand-Eyed Demon.
Unable to vent his resentment towards the Thousand-Eyed Demon, he was left to scowl at the newcomer instead.
Wayne ignored him, took the hit list, and with a lift of his hand, signaled Jeliff to beat it, not to be a nuisance in his territory.
Such pettiness!
Jeliff huffed and left, annoyed that recruiting Wayne had brought about another competitor for himself.
After Jeliff had left, Hell’s gaping maw of red lips finished chewing its meal. It seemed to have grown considerably, and its calls for ’Mother’ grew stronger.
Wayne frowned at the Alchemy Array. According to the Alchemy Book, a complete alchemic formula required six hundred sixty-six bodies, while the requirement from the Thousand-Eyed Demon was only sixty-six, clearly inconsistent with the book’s account.
There must be another ritual site!
The Heavenly Father’s Court effortlessly provided sixty-six names, indicating the Court was well aware of Lundan’s Hell worship, perhaps with some omissions, but surely in control of the vast majority.
If the Thousand-Eyed Demon has another ritual site, Lundan’s Hell worship would suffer significantly, and the Court would likely be informed at once.
"That’s not right either, incredibly cautious, wouldn’t leave any slipups in such a place."
Wayne, unable to come up with a conclusion, left the third hideout with Mona.
————
At Mona’s house, Wayne sat on the sofa, spreading out the map to study it.
Mona sat beside him, to make sure he remembered it well, taking extra time to examine it.
Ever since testing the waters last time and confirming she was one of his own, Mona seldom sat on Wayne’s lap, at least when they were alone.
Hideout three was the exception, done out of necessity to prevent the Thousand-Eyed Demon from monitoring them, occasional close contact was still required.
After ten minutes, Wayne stretched, stood up from the sofa, and began pacing the living room.
Having memorized the markings on the map, Mona asked, "Master, each marking of blood on the map is different, some are sheep’s blood, some are crow’s, should I prepare them all for you?"
"Otherwise, do you expect me to collect them myself?"
He tossed the list onto Mona’s lap, "Memorize them all. You have two days to handle it, as you’ve seen, they are quite urgent."
Mona put away the list, respecting Wayne’s undercover professionalism, their conversation was especially subtle when gathering information.
"You’ve been seen with me quite a bit recently, and you’ve rather loosened up in dress and manner. Has the Holy See noticed any changes in you?" Wayne inquired.
"No, I’ve been on a special mission, and there’s no need to return to the cathedral headquarters unless necessary."
A special mission?
Keeping close tabs on me, aren’t you? Not bad, although the investigation has yet to find anything, you’ve already managed to stay close.
Wayne raised an eyebrow but curbed his curiosity to ask further questions. There was no rush; there would be time for that later.
He continued, "I’ve seen your loyalty, now I have a task for you. Go back to the cathedral tonight, find a few of the higher-ups with some clout, and bring me back some information; I need it."
Mona’s expression turned serious, "Please proceed."
"My master is hunting some specials. Has the Holy See noticed his actions, and if so, do they know his objectives?"
"Secondly, access to the hideouts requires a teleportation portal. Does the Holy See have other methods of opening it, and how many gates have they located?"
"Lastly, my master plans to initiate his scheme earlier. If the Holy See is aware of this, do they have the capacity to stop it?"
Counting off on his fingers, Wayne said, "Just these. I’ll wait here for you. Make it quick, and don’t delay until tomorrow."
Mona nodded and rose to leave.
"Wait a second!"
Wayne called out to Mona, his tone less than pleased, "Change your clothes. What kind of nun looks so impure? You’re clearly telegraphing to the Holy See that there’s something wrong with you."
[The Self-Cultivation of an Undercover Agent]
Mona acknowledged her mistake, returned to her bedroom on the second floor to change, and after toning down her makeup to a lighter style, she left the house.
"Who are you putting on makeup for in the middle of the night!"
Wayne couldn’t help but express his disdain without speaking; he closed his eyes and waited for a reply from the Holy See.
Two hours later, Mona hurried back, "Master, it went very smoothly, I seduced a high-ranking official and got quite a bit of intelligence."
"How exactly did you seduce him? Go into detail. I haven’t seen much of the world."
Wayne sneered as he spoke, "Your master, I, like to have exclusive enjoyment and don’t have a hobby of sharing with others. Remember, this is an exception and won’t happen again."
Alright, alright, I won’t make things up like that next time. There’s no one else here; is there a need to keep emphasizing your persona?
"Master, I won’t dare next time."
Mona sighed, admitting her mistake with a beaten look. Having frequently pushed past her limits, she was no longer phased by such shameful lines.
"What did the high-ranking official say?"
"Your master’s master is hunting someone, but the reasons are unclear to the Holy See at this time; they’ve analyzed several possibilities, with the two most likely being the use of special Alchemy Arrays to transfer consciousness to more bodies."
Wayne nodded, both possibilities existed, but he was more inclined to believe the second one.
If he remembered correctly, the current body used by the Thousand-Eyed Demon was named Quentin, an entomologist, originally an ordinary human and not a mage.
So, was Chris being followed because the Thousand-Eyed Demon took an interest in her body?
"We’ve only located one teleportation portal and have marked it, but to find more portals, we must place specific items."
Mona glanced at Wayne, "According to the Holy See, castles are often breached from the inside; they need someone on the inside to cooperate."
"Wishful thinking. How could there be someone to cooperate? Take me, for example. I am utterly loyal to my master, I would never betray him," Wayne said with a scoff.
"The last piece of intelligence, the Holy See has the power to stop everything!"
After finishing, Mona felt she left something out and added, "All the above information was proposed by me as hypotheses; the official then processed and answered them. Your master’s master hasn’t been exposed, and no one knows he’s now in Lundan."
Damn, that many people know about this already?
Can it be trusted? What if there is an undercover agent from the Thousand-Eyed Demon?
Wayne’s heart raced, feeling that the Holy See didn’t take him seriously at all. Such brazen actions would hardly go unnoticed by the Thousand-Eyed Demon.
"I understand. Get the sixty-six bodies ready as soon as possible, and send them all to the third stronghold by tomorrow night... after that’s done,"
Wayne looked deeply at Mona, "I’m tired of this, don’t show up before me anymore. If one day I feel like it, I will come here looking for you."
Mona’s heart skipped a beat, "Master, are you planning to..."
"It has nothing to do with you. If nothing unexpected happens, tomorrow night will be our last meeting. Be careful when packing your bags, and don’t stuff them with the specific items mentioned by the Holy See’s officials." Wayne instructed before walking away without looking back.
Watching his retreating figure, Mona opened her mouth, feeling somewhat reluctant to let go.
If tomorrow night was indeed going to be the last time they met, she hoped to see him in his true form. She wasn’t greedy; one glance would be enough.
————
The following night,
Mona completed the task of sixty-six bodies, transporting them back and forth until dawn.
The gaping maw of Hell consumed them all in one go, emitting a chilling laugh of contentment.
Wayne didn’t speak to Mona, opened the portal and let her leave directly, while holding two Black Crystals plucked from the luggage, pondering how to send them to the first and second strongholds.
The second stronghold was relatively easy; Wayne could enter through the portal, find a pretext to cause trouble, and a fight would be justifiable, especially since Jeliff couldn’t stand him.
With Ah Bo at the first stronghold, sending the crystals there wouldn’t be hard, but if discovered by the Thousand-Eyed Demon, the Death Knight’s veneer would be severely compromised.
Unable to think of a safe way, Wayne decided to let it be. He had provided a wealth of information and there was no need to take further risks; it was time for the Holy See to play a desperate game.
He made up his mind, to slack off after completing the last task tomorrow and wait for the drama to unfold.
The portal opened, and Wayne stepped into the second stronghold, only to meet a Black Robe underling coming his way, which he promptly called over.
"What is it?"
"Yesterday, your boss snorted disdainfully on my turf and left stepping forward with his right foot first. This is my payback."
Wayne punched the Black Robe underling in the face, black crystals hidden between his fingers falling into the rubble’s crevices, "Tell him to be more polite on my turf next time, or it won’t be as simple as a spank on the rear."
Having said that, he opened the portal and left with long strides.
"Then go spank his rear, why hit me, picking on the honest guy, huh!"
The Black Robe underling clutched his face, growing angrier by the moment. This wasn’t over; he had to report back to his boss for justice.
