Chapter 168: Chapter 106: Got Promoted?
Early the next morning, Wayne had Philark drive Chris back to school and personally opened the car door for her as a gesture to her teacher.
"Students can be slow to understand, so please forgive any inconveniences caused."
After finishing his homework last night, Wayne invited Chris to join the Detective Agency, which had just been renovated and was about to open. It still lacked a reliable accountant.
When it comes to accounting, it’s necessary to find someone familiar.
Veronica and Vivi recommended Chris to him, and he wondered if she would be interested in taking the position, drawing a salary each month.
It didn’t matter to him whether Veronica and Vivi had recommended her or not. What mattered was that their partnership was progressing very well, and Wayne didn’t want to separate them.
An equilateral triangle and an isosceles triangle both offer stability, missing one wouldn’t work!
Hearing that it was Veronica and Vivi who recommended her, Chris happily agreed.
Her personality was such that she was always gentle, never refusing her friends’ requests. If ever there was a conflict, she often considered her friends first.
Before the car left, Wayne gave Philark a look, and the latter understood immediately. On the way back to school, he would subtly sing praises of Master Wayne.
All things considered, he was an extremely elegant gentleman, a top choice for either dating or marriage.
After the car left, Wayne invited Vivi to walk with him to Commercial Street’s Detective Agency.
Along the way, Wayne bought several newspapers and magazines to catch up on the latest news and gossip.
One piece of news caught his attention, by the end of September, the Windsor Cabinet Prime Minister was scheduled to visit Prussia to attend the summit of the four nations and sign an agreement regarding Prussia’s recovery of lost territories.
Wayne offered no comment. From a divine perspective, this was undoubtedly a foolish move, but given the current situation, stalling even momentarily was a pragmatic compromise.
Seeing Wayne’s serious expression, Vivi leaned over to look at the newspaper. Boring news, not interesting at all.
But soon, Wayne saw another piece of news in a magazine, one that was very important, even more so than the summit of the four nations.
[What exactly are stockings, and why has all of Lundan gone crazy for them?]
In the magazine, a female model clad in stockings shone brightly, her long, straight legs complemented by the stockings, revealing an allure of countless styles.
Another smaller photo taken from the streets of Lundan showed women with less perfect figures wearing stockings, concealing leg imperfections, elevating their demeanor and looking elegant and decent.
Even their facial attractiveness seemed a few points higher.
Stockings had hit the market, and just as Wayne had predicted, they were fervently sought after from the moment of their release, receiving overwhelming positive reviews and quickly depleting the stock.
The production rate of the factories couldn’t keep up with the sales, and the price of stockings kept rising, almost adjusting daily.
In front of the store, lines formed, predominantly of women, but not lacking in men. Stockings turned out to be a rave product, and among consumers, aside from complaints about the rapid price increase and scarce availability, there were no faults to speak of.
At the same time, the brand company selling the stockings, Slyphy Valentine, successfully penetrated Lundan’s fashion scene.
The magazine even featured the designer of the stockings. While there were no photos, the name Wayne overnight became a dear friend to the women of Lundan.
Men felt the same way, overcoming their initial misunderstanding. They came to believe that Wayne truly understood them.
Genius!
Stockings, as a consumable, were a revolutionary invention.
Well, a bit expensive!
"Tsk, it’s only been a short while, and how did they become consumables already? What is everyone thinking, really? The morals of society are declining..."
Wayne murmured softly, refusing to be lumped in with those showing off their ideas. He didn’t understand them at all – inventing stockings was meant to let women confidently wear beautiful dresses in summer, without any messy intentions.
Vivi leaned over, gazing at the model in the magazine with a frown and pouting, "The photos are deceiving, models have legs that are too long, ordinary people don’t look the same in stockings, this is consumer fraud."
"That’s not fair to say. You also have long legs, and I’m sure you would look nice in stockings." Wayne knew exactly what Vivi wanted to hear, and he said it outright.
"Hehe."
As expected, Vivi’s face lit up in an instant, tugging at Wayne, eager to go to Commercial Street to buy stockings.
"No need to go through all that trouble, I have several pairs at home that you can try. If they don’t fit, I’ll have the factory send over a few more pairs." Wayne endorsed Vivi’s desire for a little pampering.
"Eh, how come you know the factory?"
"Look at this."
Wayne pointed to the designer’s name in the magazine, then pointed to himself.
Vivi’s mouth hung open in disbelief, "When did this happen? How come you never mentioned it? Are you really a fashion designer too?"
"I’m low-key. I don’t want too many people to know. It’s just my nature. I’m not one to boast. Like that time with the movie, I never mentioned it either," said Wayne, always careful to cultivate his personal image.
Had his ambitions not been so large, and had he not been playing a balancing act – and given that the hulking men were truly substantial – he would have already had his way with a giveaway girl like Vivi.
Vivi nodded repeatedly, her admiration for Wayne peaking in that moment.
A woman’s love for a man often includes a bit of admiration, which is why successful men can easily switch to beautiful girlfriends, sometimes without even flaunting their wealth, just capitalizing on their personal image is enough.
Wayne patted Vivi’s head, and she instinctively hooked his arm, whispering, "Wayne, who do you think would look better in stockings, Chris or Veronica? Both of them have pretty long legs."
You’re probably not asking about the stockings, are you!
