Chapter 1267: Chapter 428 Above the Demigod, a Swap for One; Below the Demigod, I Am Invincible_3
She could already guess that Wayne would likely take the deposit and then pull up his pants, pretending not to know her.
Even so, Guinevere still took out the Philosopher’s Stone. The Moonlight Knight was one of their own, and there was no point in hiding things between allies.
"Straightforward!"
Wayne gave a thumbs-up and let out an excited howl, clearly satisfied with his haul.
The Five Great Churches each had a Philosopher’s Stone, and Wayne had already acquired four of them. Only the Death Church’s Philosopher’s Stone remained untasted.
Always thinking three steps ahead, he was already scheming on how to acquire the Philosopher’s Stones of both the Death Church and the Papal State.
Advancing from Golden Mage to Legendary Mage had consumed an unfathomable amount of resources and knowledge for Wayne. Now, to ascend from Legendary to Demigod, it would take yet another astronomical wave of resources. The Philosopher’s Stones alone wouldn’t suffice at all.
Even with the enthusiastic investments from devils, he was still far from breaking through the bottleneck.
Where to shear the sheep next was a question worth pondering deeply.
An image of the dean popped into Wayne’s head. He blew a puff of air in its direction, wiggled his fingers mischievously, then leisurely strolled into the bedroom, locking the door behind him.
But he left the window open!
"Can’t be serious about going to her..."
Wayne muttered to himself. The Dark Goddess was no easy opponent. Turning to her would be like asking a tiger for its skin. It might even be safer to challenge the three Subsidiary Gods of the Death Kingdom directly.
However, the Subsidiary Gods were backed by the Nature Goddess. Compared to her, the Dark Goddess suddenly seemed like a superb ally.
"What a headache."
Wayne grumbled, but his eyes suddenly lit up with inspiration.
Death was performing sit-ups, Nature was unfathomable, and Darkness was cunning and treacherous. Each of the three had their own agenda. Comparatively, the united forces of the Sun and Moonlight were undoubtedly a much better choice.
These two Goddesses were at odds with Darkness and had been cornered by Nature, leaving them feeling rather insecure at the moment.
Wayne was acutely aware of his own situation. He was leagues away from divine status. Ahead of him, there was still a throng of Subsidiary Gods, Demon Kings, and Archangels. He had no qualification to form an alliance with the two Goddesses.
The only thing he had was talent.
If alliance was out of reach, then the only option was to strategize on turning the two Goddesses into his investors.
How to attract foreign capital...
Two methods: first, showcasing an excellent internal market with strong purchasing power; second, creating a sense of exclusivity, or exploiting political correctness to make foreign capital feel compelled to invest.
As luck would have it, Wayne had both going for him.
"Cote, Guinevere, at this point, I have to tell you something very important!"
With a solemn face, Wayne looked at the two women, motioning for Mona to erect a soundproof barrier. He lowered his voice and said, "This is a grave matter. You two knowing is enough—don’t breathe a word to others. Of course, the Goddesses are an exception."
Seeing how serious Wayne was, the two Holy Maidens held their breath in suspense.
"As you know, I am triad-selected by the three Gods. Elemental Mantra, Dawn Admonition, and White Night Purity Words have all acknowledged me."
Wayne continued, "But that’s not all. Not long ago, under orders from the Nature Pope, I visited the Dark Church. There, I met the Dark Goddess."
"What?!" x2
The two Holy Maidens gasped in shock, hastily pressing him for details.
"You might find this hard to believe, but the Dark Goddess is refined and gentle, speaks elegantly, and carries herself with an air of noble sophistication," Wayne remarked in awe.
"I don’t believe you!" x2
Cote and Guinevere shook their heads vehemently. Regardless of the truth, their education since childhood had hammered home the dichotomy of light versus dark. Believing was not an option.
Actually, **I** don’t believe it either!
Wayne silently added in his mind, while brazenly singing praises of the dean, "The Dark Goddess somehow caught wind of certain information. It might have been during the Icebound Continent incident—after all, the Dark Saintess was present back then. She knew I was triad-selected and proactively offered the Twilight Deadlock to recruit me as a Dark Knight."
"You turned her down!" Cote declared firmly.
"Right?" Guinevere asked, less confidently.
"Of course I turned her down!" Wayne exclaimed. "I, Wayne, embody the virtues of a Knight, with loyalty as my hallmark. How could I sink as low as becoming a four-faced lackey, serving multiple sides dishonorably? The very idea of me becoming a Dark Knight is laughable."
"You didn’t really agree, did you?!" Cote was on the verge of tears.
"You totally agreed, didn’t you?" Guinevere covered her face with her hand.
"Given that it’s the Dark Goddess we’re talking about, and how powerful she is, not to mention the fact we were at the Dark Church Headquarters, I had no choice but to temporarily yield, feigning loyalty to her," Wayne sighed, his voice tinged with bitterness as he recounted the painful episode.
"But you weren’t like this when dealing with the devils!" x2
"The devils don’t bear gifts like the Dark Goddess does..."
Wayne retorted immediately. Spotting the glares from the two Holy Maidens, he coughed lightly and clarified, "What I meant was, the situation was perilous back then. Accepting the Twilight Deadlock was a necessary compromise—a fleeting act of submission, nothing more. Darkness may have claimed my body, but it will never own my heart. My faith remains steadfast in the Sun and Moonlight Goddesses, unwavering and eternal."
As if you could say something like that and still claim to have any faith at all! x2
The two Holy Maidens shook their heads repeatedly. This was far beyond what they could handle, and they resolved to inform the Goddesses as soon as possible.
"Don’t look so disappointed, you two. It’s called going undercover—integrating into hostile camps! In just a few days, I achieved outstanding results," Wayne boasted. "That Dark Saintess... what’s her name? Too long, I’ve already forgotten. All I know is, she’s got quite the... ahem. Anyway, she came to me late one night, as per the Dark Goddess’ Divine Decree. Sensing a golden opportunity, I decisively stripped her of her purity."
"..."
What’s there to be so smug about? It’s even worse now! x2
The two Holy Maidens were utterly speechless. Judging from the triumphant look on Wayne’s face, it was obvious his act of "sleeping with the Dark Saintess" wasn’t some bold attempt to humiliate the Dark Church, but rather a self-serving indulgence cloaked in the mantle of justice.
Ugh, shameless!
The thought of the Dark Saintess completing her Divine Decree, while they themselves had achieved nothing of note, filled Cote and Guinevere with envy and frustration, subtly altering their perspectives as well.
