Chapter 1080: Chapter 381: His Holiness the Pope, We Have a Traitor Among Us

"What Divine Decree, Cain didn’t say, insisted on waiting until everyone was present before speaking.

Dark Church Headquarters has three top leaders, the Pope in charge of internal affairs, the Holy Maiden who delivers the Goddess’s Divine Decrees, and the Great Sage who interprets the Divine Decrees of Subsidiary Gods.

The three of them hold equal status, but Holy Maiden Anastasia is too outstanding, with her reputation within the Church, she subtly outshines both the Pope and the Great Sage.

Pope Ivan doesn’t mind; after all, Anastasia is his daughter, he couldn’t be happier.

The position of the Great Sage is rather awkward, directly facing the father-daughter duo who overshadow everyone, if not opposing them, he would end up being their mouthpiece, so he stood against them.

In doing so, his relationship with Ivan became strained.

"Cain, what is so important that it must be discussed now?"

As Ivan arrived at the council hall, still annoyed that Wayne had borrowed the Philosopher’s Stone and not returned it, he sat down and looked around, his frown deepening.

"His Holiness the Pope, we have a traitor among us, right in this conference room," Cain stood up and said.

"...xN

The crowd was stunned at first, then began whispering to each other.

It seemed unlikely that there was a traitor, they were all insiders, having worked together for years, trust was still there; they suspected the Great Sage was trying to regain some ground, using a Divine Decree as an excuse.

"Cain, who is the traitor, you..."

Ivan began to speak but paused, seeing Cain’s intense gaze fixed on him, he couldn’t help but chuckle: "What, after interpreting the Divine Decree, am I that traitor?"

"Exactly so," Cain declared loudly.

The statement stirred a storm, the council hall erupted into chaos, and everyone denounced Cain, telling him not to spout nonsense.

"His Holiness the Pope’s contributions to the Church are clear to us; he couldn’t possibly be a traitor..."

"His Holiness the Pope has raised the most outstanding Holy Maiden..."

"Exactly, just look at Her Holiness, and you’ll know he’s not the traitor!"

Faced with the crowd’s accusations, Cain remained composed, confidently stating, "Her Holiness is indeed outstanding, and I don’t deny Ivan’s contributions to the Church, but you are all Legendary Mages, you should understand that at this juncture, a choice must be made."

"Cain, how dare you address His Holiness the Pope by his name!"

"Shut up, you bunch of sycophants!"

Cain scanned the crowd, placing a hand on his chest: "If I have misinterpreted the Divine Decree and slandered the Pope’s reputation, I am willing to be punished, but if not, can you bear the responsibility?"

The crowd fell silent, all turning to Ivan for a decision.

"Cain, you call me a traitor, where is the evidence, what does the Divine Decree state?" Ivan went straight to the point.

"Ivan, in your future choices, you have betrayed the faith, you chose the Nature Goddess, this is what the Divine Decree states," Cain confidently, assuredly affirmed.

"Evidence!"

Ivan, speechless, said: "Is it because Anton lost to the Envoy of the Naturalism Church, you think I’m a traitor?"

"Evidence is the Philosopher’s Stone!"

Cain slammed his hands on the table, his presence dominating: "Where is the Philosopher’s Stone you control, did you hand it over to the Envoy of the Naturalism Church, bring it out and prove your innocence."

"...xN

The crowd looked toward Ivan, seeing he neither clarified his position nor presented the Philosopher’s Stone as proof, their faces turned pale, a foreboding feeling arising.

"Ivan, don’t say you didn’t carry the stone on you, no one would believe that, hand over the Philosopher’s Stone, prove my accusation wrong, and prove you’re not a traitor," Cain harshly chided, at that moment, he was the hero defending justice.

"His Holiness the Pope, hurry and bring out the Philosopher’s Stone."

"Yeah, at this point..."

The crowd spoke for Ivan, internally guessing that the Philosopher’s Stone might no longer be with Ivan.

The answer was too horrifying; they refused to believe it.

"The Philosopher’s Stone is not with me, I followed the Goddess’s command, and handed it over to the Divine Oracle High Priest Wayne," Ivan’s voice was stiff, his expression somewhat unnatural.

"Ha ha ha, what a command from the Goddess, the keeper of our life and death, ordered by the Goddess to be handed over to the Naturalism Church, Ivan, can’t you think of a better excuse?"

Cain confidently banged on the table: "Ask around, does anyone believe this kind of sophistry?"

Faced with the crowd’s pleading eyes, Ivan saw deep disappointment in them, his heart ached, feeling like a betrayer, failing everyone’s trust.

But the truth was too absurd, at worst, it could lead to a collapse of faith, or even endanger lives, he couldn’t divulge it, or it would harm everyone.

"Ivan, speak!"

Cain, like a victorious general pointing at the traitor, said: "Speak, you handed over the Philosopher’s Stone to the Naturalism Church because you chose the Nature Goddess, you betrayed everyone, and yourself."

"I did not, my loyalty to the Goddess is beyond question, this truly was the Goddess’s command!" Ivan replied coldly.

"From where did you receive the Divine Decree, did the Holy Maiden say it?"

"..."

Indeed!

Thinking of his beloved daughter clinging to Wayne, Ivan’s eyes twitched, his face contorted for a moment.

Just for a moment, not more.

Cain caught that expression, mysteriously smiling: "So it seems, even Her Holiness has betrayed the Church, you and your daughter..."

"Cain, that’s going too far!"

"Her Holiness’s character is well known, anyone could be a traitor, except her."

"Hundreds of years of purity, how dare you frame her here!"

Facing the crowd’s angry gazes, Cain waved his hands: "I’m just speculating, if it wasn’t the Holy Maiden passing on a false Divine Decree, then it must be Ivan spouting nonsense, he hasn’t received any Divine Decree, he’s outright a complete traitor."
