Mythical Monster Evolution
Chapter 48: One Last Gamble

Chapter 48: One Last Gamble

Kai felt the beads of sweat on his forehead slide down the side of his face.

His heart in his chest beat faster and faster.

He wasn’t sure what to do to fix this situation; everything he had tried had been countered with ease.

All of his skills seemed useless in front of this man. He could react to all of his movements, he could react to all of his attacks, and, more importantly, a single strike from this man would use a lot of Monster Energy.

’Isla, just where are you when I need you the most...’

Kai gulped as he knew that time was running out.

If he didn’t come up with anything new, then he would die and fail this stage... meaning that he would most likely be stuck here for the entirety of the five days.

***

Isla was sitting in front of a giant screen, almost the size of the ones you’d find in cinemas.

"What the hell is he doing?!"

Isla slammed her fist against the armrest.

"Why isn’t he thinking for one little moment? Tsk, stupid restrictions forcing me to stay cooped up in here. Of course, he’ll fail without my guidance; he’s a lost kid the moment I disappear!"

Isla couldn’t help but shake her head at Kai’s sight.

It looked as if he had completely forgotten everything that he had learned.

There was also the fact that Kai didn’t want to run away for some strange reason. He stayed in the fight, trying his best to defeat the man right there.

He had time—5 days in total. He could afford to spend a few more hours in this stage. However, if he took longer than a day... things were bound to get dicey.

With a total of five days, spending more than one day on a single stage could put them at the risk of not completing the Trial of Monsters.

"Fucking Hell Difficulty. What did Master think when he forced that difficulty onto him? It’s obvious that he’ll never be able to make it."

Isla could only shake her head as she remembered the names of those who had gone through this difficulty thousands of years ago. She could count them on her hands, the greatest geniuses of their generation. All of them became great beings deserving respect.

However, the only difference was that they had earned that difficulty. That was not the case for Kai; he had been forced into this difficulty. Kai was talented; she had observed it with her own eyes. But even then, she wasn’t sure if his talent could be compared to theirs.

"If he dies once, then it all comes crumbling down. We’ll have to try again. However, now that they know we have entered this place, it’ll be a lot harder to make our way back here..."

Isla sighed.

She could only hope that Kai would manage to pull off a miracle.

***

’Is this it?’

Kai had tried attacking the man before him again and again. However, nothing was working.

He was too slow, too weak to make the slightest difference.

’Fuck. This time I’m really fucked, aren’t I?’

No one would be coming to save him this time.

He was all alone in this trial; there won’t be anyone to save him on the brink of death.

He was left to himself for the first time since he had entered the Realm of Monsters, and he certainly didn’t like it.

"Are you panicking, young dragon?" the guard muttered with his chest bumped up. "Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to give you a painless death."

The emotionless voice sent shivers down Kai’s back.

Kai glanced down at the ring slid onto his index finger.

’Can’t you do something, stupid ring? You’ve been sleeping ever since Isla unlocked some of your content... Haven’t I gotten strong enough to break a little bit more of the seal?’

"Have you given up?" the guard said with a smirk. "Why did you stop moving? Do you want me to finish you off?"

Kai didn’t answer as his gaze was focused on the ring, hesitation overwhelming his mind.

’Should I take the risk?’

’Should I infuse all the Monster Energy remaining in my Monster Core in hopes that I can break more of the seal?’

It was the only option he could think of.

He had already tried everything, and [Shadow Cloak] didn’t work, which meant that he also couldn’t run away.

Kai spent a few more seconds staring at the ring on his finger before making his choice.

The blue energy that was peacefully resting in his core was now summoned. Kai masterfully moved it inside his body toward one precise target: the ring.

Everyone around felt the surge of energy coming from Kai, and they all imagined that he would launch one final attack. However, as the seconds passed and the energy dissipated, they realized that whatever this young dragon had done hadn’t worked.

His shadow armor vanished, leaving him open to any attack.

’Come on... come on... just a bit more!’

Kai felt the ring on the verge of opening up. He only needed just a little bit more energy.

There were only droplets remaining inside his core, but it wouldn’t be enough.

’I need to use the spiritual energy.’

Kai continued with his gamble as the strange coat of energy surrounding him all went into the divine artifact on his finger.

A weak light began emitting from the ring.

A weak light that became much stronger as more spiritual energy entered the ring.

Then, it blinded everyone close to Kai, and the young dragon was also affected as he completely lost consciousness.

As the light dissipated, all the guards noticed that the young dragon was lying on the ground.

"Did he die?" one of the guards forming the circle asked.

"Someone check his pulse," the captain said, cutting off all useless conversation.

One of the guards walked up and placed their hand against the dragon’s nape.

No pulse.

He then checked the pulse on his chest.

Nothing.

"He’s dead. It seems like he killed himself."
