Chapter 31: Inevitable Death.
The Demon cult?
Shadow hesitated for a moment, just long enough for Liam to take the initiative and attack. He brought down his spiked mace with enough force to crush a man’s skull.
Shadow dodged in the nick of time, evading the attack as it landed on the ground. It sent tremors through the cavern, pieces of ice falling down.
Shadow was unsure of what to do, if these people were well aware of the Demon cult, then he couldn’t kill them without extracting information from them. That was the tricky part. Especially Scar, who stood there with his ice spirit behind him.
How tiresome.
Another attack came from the side, this time, his daggers flashed in his hands, blocking the attack quickly before it could cause any damage to him.
His breathing became labored. He could see ice growing on parts of his body, making it extremely difficult for him to move.
"Just give up!" Liam shouted, jumping up and delivering an overhead blow. Shadow was in a difficult situation, the ice growing the parts of his body had frozen them in place. In other words, if he tried to block another attack from the man with the mace, parts of his body might shatter from the force of the impact.
Shit!
He didn’t want to use this here, where everyone could see. But he knew if he didn’t do this, his life might as well be gone, but if he did, he couldn’t return Liora to her father again...
"Aahh, what a drag..." He sighed, his throat had almost frozen up, making it hard for him to talk. Shadow gripped the daggers tightly, then dissolved into a shadow.
"What?" Lia turned around, looking in surprise.
"Where did he go?"
He looked around desperately, trying his best to find the enemy for he found a way to kill the boss. Suddenly, numerous voice steps could be heard. Liam grinned happily, the reinforcements are here.
Druu arrived to where Liam was, while the others gathered around in a circle, protecting Scar. Scar seemed deeply troubled and doubly confused, Liam knew this, he had learned ways to understand his Boss who didn’t have a face.
"I don’t know... He just vanished all of a sudden, I can’t find him anywhere".
"MANAZONE!".
They all heard this simultaneously, it wasn’t the voices of any of them, it was a voice that resounded through the cavern. Liam looked left and right in a panic.
His artifact couldn’t find him, he couldn’t see the outline of Shadow, but he could see that of others, both living and non-living.
Suddenly, everything seemed darker, much darker than he had hoped it thought the cavern would be, he turned around in confusion.
"What is this power?..." He whispered.
Liam did not expect the next turn of events that ensured. Scar had begun attacking, indiscriminately.
"Come out!"
"Where are you?" He screamed, throwing ice in all directions. He froze some of the men who had been protecting him, Liam panicked at first, but he knew how the Boss perceived the world.
Scar didn’t have eyes, his eyes were burnt off in a fire a long time ago, after that, he had bound an ice Spirit by himself and used the power of the spirit to perceive the world.
But only in areas within his range, he senses the heat signatures in all living things, as opposed to his Frost. As long as you stepped on his ice, he could find you. And this cave right now was covered in his ice.
The boss was the only person capable of finding this man.
From what Liam could understand, the man he had been fighting had literally turned into a shadow, being ethereal, that’s why he couldn’t see him in the dark using the artifact. But that also means that he couldn’t attack in that form. He had to become solid before he could deliver a killing blow.
That was what Liam would wait for, that slim chance.
Amidst the chaos, Liam watched carefully, he saw his men fall under the dagger of the enemy, but he held his own, just one chance.
Using his artifact, he couldn’t find Shadow’s body, that’s not what he went for. He was sensing his daggers, they weren’t a part of him, but he seemed to cover with shadow from time to time.
There!
He shot forward, blocking an attack to the head of one of his men, the daggers deflected and flew out of his hands, clanking to the ground elsewhere. Without a second thought, Liam rushed over and slammed his spiked mace into both daggers, breaking them instantly.
He sighed and looked back. The carnage had stopped, the boss had calmed down too. All that was left was to kill the defenseless man. He had already broken his weapons, what else would he use?
Druu was slowly approaching, his friend was still alive. Liam felt truly relieved. Although they had lost quite a few of their men today, they would grow stronger and be more careful from now on.
In the darkness of the cavern, a lone man suddenly appeared at a corner unknown to anyone, he grinned wickedly, anticipating what was about to happen.
"Hey Druu, hope you aren’t injured or... Uuurgh" Liam spat blood. A long sword lodged itself in his gut, Druu held the sword but at the same time he looked like he didn’t. Or perhaps that was what Liam wanted to believe.
"Druu..." He groaned in pain as his friend gripped the hilt of the blade and dealt a downward slash.
"How..." Liam thought, he looked behind Druu and it was a complete massacre, his men had begun killing each other, slaughtering themselves as though they didn’t know who they were. Or worse, as though they were mind controlled.
Shadow watched the parody with a smile on his face. It wasn’t his fault, he hadn’t wanted to use this skill, he told himself. ’But you broke my weapons’.
He had no choice.
