Chapter 90: The Poor Third Years

Chapter 90: Chapter 90: The Poor Third Years

Soon it was the next day.

Lake was seated in class waiting for the teacher to arrive.

As Lake was talking to the three other students in the woods yesterday, Iris somehow managed to find Sylph and successfully retrieved her, allowing Lake to escape in the process.

However, before she left, Sylph kept shouting for the three men to keep their promise and meet up with her when the time came later into the evening.

Turning his head, he could see the subtle excitement in the eyes of the troublesome fairy a few seats away from him.

Bradford and Allen had returned to normal and continued on with their usual acting like nothing had happened yesterday.

Lake was also the same as them, after all, to him it was just a small episode in his life.

At this point, around fifteen minutes had passed and the class was starting to realize something. Lake could hear the whispers of the students as they expressed their doubts.

"There’s no way that the instructor decided not to come, right?"

"Could it be that he got sick?"

"Idiot, every Instructor is at least a Martial Master, the chance of them getting sick is extremely low, especially for one like Instructor Cedric who only ever keeps his head stuck in books and research papers on mana."

"Then what’s the deal? Although I’m not complaining, the Instructors are usually never late."

"That’s true, they make a point to come early to start our hell sooner."

As Lake was thinking about what was going on, he suddenly had an idea as he remembered what the principal had told him yesterday when he handed him a copy of the "Principles of Mana Flow".

At that point, the door to the classroom opened as Alec walked in.

Before he could even reach the center of the classroom, the group of students started to bombard him with questions.

"Yo Teach, what’s the deal? Where’s Instructor Cedric?"

"Yeah, did something happen to him?"

"Hey, why does it sound like you’re cursing him with that ominous question?"

"Nonsense, I’m just expressing my worry for one of my respected teachers."

"Hmm, really? I seem to recall that you’re one of the students that struggle the most in Instructor Yorick’s Mana Theory class."

"Cough! Cough! I-I don’t know what you’re talking about..."

As Alec reached the center in front of the classroom, he turned to the class as he waved his hand lazily to quiet the rowdy students down.

"Alright, alright. Calm down, Instructor Cedric is fine. He’s just busy with something so he won’t be able to attend class today."

As Alec spoke, Lake saw him glance towards him at the end of his sentence.

Seeing this, Lake basically confirmed his previous guess. It seems that Instructor Cedric is currently engaged in intensive research with the new "study material" he had received.

"As a result of Instructor Cedric’s absence, you’ll be given the morning class free to continue your training. However, your evening Practical class will still be conducted as normal, so make sure to attend."

Hearing this, no one decided to continue to ask questions as most students revealed an excited expression.

After all, they don’t have to sit through Instructor Cedric’s long monotonous speeches today which usually left everyone dead on the inside by the end of the class.

However, a few students still voiced their doubts.

"Will we still receive points despite not having class?"

"No need to worry. Points would still be given out as usual as the problem originates from the Instructor’s end."

As everyone heard this, they were finally relieved.

For once they could take a rare opportunity to take a break from their packed schedules designed to earn them points.

"Alright, that’s all I have to say. If there is nothing else, you are dismissed."

As Alec spoke, he turned and walked away, not giving the students the chance to ask a question even if there was.

Lake only watched him walk away as he got up.

Since class wasn’t being held, he could take the time to advance on another one of his objectives.

Walking out of the classroom, he began to make his way to the third year block.

Lake had to fulfill a condition set by the Principal if he wished to use the land so he wanted to start working on it right away.

Because of the third years’ overwhelming strength compared to their predecessors, the academy had decided to make use of them as an opportunity to kill three birds with one stone.

Across the Grey Dragon Continent, although humanity had reclaimed most of their cities and towns, there were many areas of wildlands infested with monsters that had been left untouched.

One such example was the field that Lake had gone to where he met the Spider Empress.

These fields often times had cases of monsters expanding their territories past the borders humanity had drawn out due to overpopulation. When that time came, it was usually the low level hunters job to deal with it.

Another example was the monsters that spilled out after a rift collapsed. Since rifts could appear almost anywhere, these monsters were the hardest to guard against and usually required a stronger group of hunters to deal with it in a quick and timely manner.

Right now, the academy was using the third years who had all advanced to the Martial Warrior realm to deal with both these problems. Sending them out on mission with the excuse of "it’s an excellent way to earn points", the academy managed to make a fortune from dealing with all these problems.

Students reached the point requirement and no longer had to continue with clean up duty? No problem, just raise the amount of points required to graduate.

This was the philosophy the sadistic group of instructors had come up with to both train the students through combat and experience, earn a large amount of money and resources from the government, and also increase the prestige of the academy.

And the only people who had to suffer through all of this torture, of course, was the poor group of third years who were being used like slaves.

However, it wasn’t all that bad as it could also be said that the constant battle against countless monsters allowed for each student’s battle experience to soar!

If it wasn’t for the fact that the students could sense the change in themselves and the progress they’ve made, they would have long filed a complaint against the academy.

Of course, that wasn’t to say that they didn’t, it just meant that even if they did file a complaint, the academy had a valid excuse to deny all charges.

This was a martial arts academy, if the students were becoming stronger, they were doing their jobs no matter how cruel the method may be. As long as it doesn’t cross the bottom line of human morals, which had dropped by a few degrees after the Disaster, what does it matter?

As for how Lake knew about this, naturally, it was through observing the fates of the demonic group of Instructors.

As Lake slipped out of his own thoughts, he found himself at the area where the poor group of third year students usually stayed.

It was a large lounge area with several sofas and coffee tables scattered around. The air conditioner kept the lounge cool and several intricate decorations on the wall made everything feel quite luxurious.

However, as Lake walked in, he saw that there was almost no one here.

There were only two people sitting down around a coffee table as they stared at an item on the table.

They were both men, one was skinny while the other was muscular and they were both staring at a cup of noodles that stuck out like a sore thumb in the luxurious lounge.

Looking at the strange scene, Lake didn’t immediately approach the two of them but first looked at their fates.

After understanding the situation, Lake suddenly felt a little awkward.

Right now, the two men were in an intense battle to decide how they were going to split the single cup of noodles that they managed to purchase after saving up spare points for a week.

"Listen Jayce, it’s no secret between us that I contributed 0.2 more points towards this meal. I say that I get nine out of ten out of the entire meal while you take the remaining one."

"Bullshit. Last time I spent 0.9 points to get us the last meal a few weeks ago but we still ended up splitting it in half. I say this time I take nine tenths while you take the remaining tenth."

When Landur heard Jayce’s words, he refused to back down.

"Why don’t we work out a deal then. Next time when we’re buying alcohol, I’ll pay 0.5 points more than everyone else but you’ll take the extra cup I’ll get as a result."

"Cowshit. Give me the points now and I’ll agree to your condition."

Landur’s eyes twitched hearing Jayce’s works but he still continued to try and convince him.

At this point, Lake walked forward and spoke out. He couldn’t bear to watch any longer as the two grown men fought over a cup of noodles only worth 0.5 point...

"Excuse me, but are you guys third years?"

Hearing the sudden voice, neither Jayce nor Landur looked away from the noodles.

When Lake was starting to wonder if they were ignoring him or were just too engrossed in their negotiation for the cup of noodles to notice him, Landur suddenly spoke out without looking away.

"Indeed, we are third years, but I wonder what someone from the lower years is doing out here?"

Lake didn’t immediately respond upon hearing the two of them talk but instead thought for a bit.

"I say, why don’t I buy you two seniors two sets of the basic meals so that we could talk-"

Before Lake could finish his sentences, the two men who were previously engrossed in a deep staring contest with a cup of noodles both turned their heads simultaneously.

"Thank you for your kindness! Please feed us!"

Hearing the shouts of the two grown men echo through the empty lounge, Lake stood there stunned.
