Chapter 71: Arrival of the Fairies
Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Arrival of the Fairies
A week had passed since Lake started attending the Academy.
During that time he spent several hours, maybe even days, working on remodeling his Mana Circulation skill as well as attending various classes.
The academy had a variety of classes to attend at a student’s discretion. Besides from the usual combat oriented classes, there were a wide variety of life skill classes that a student could attend to increase his or her range of knowledge.
Lake wasn’t too interested in the combat related classes as with his Weapon Master skill he didn’t have much reason to attend them. The only combat related class he chose to attend was the Hand to Hand Martial Arts Class as it was the only one that his Weapon Master skill didn’t cover.
Besides that, all of his other classes were life skill classes such as cooking, rift survival, team management, hunting tactics, emergency first aid and monster ecology.
Most, if not all of Lake’s previous knowledge on rifts and survival came from research he did on the internet since he was previously too poor to access any of the information that these classes offer.
That’s why Lake took the opportunity to expand his knowledge here and broaden the range of his skills so that he wouldn’t be fully reliant on the system to carry him in the future.
After all, the system was something that he got by chance and was never something he had planned to rely on from the start.
Another piece of good news Lake discovered was that Kate held up her end of the deal.
Only a few days after Lake asked Kate to return his favor, he was able to observe noticeable changes in the way people behaved around him.
No longer did people look at him with anger or dislike, instead, Lake was able to see looks of jealousy and envy.
When Lake had first seen these looks he was also slightly surprised but after doing a little investigation he was able to find out quickly.
When Lake was explaining what he wanted from Kate he had only asked her to use her influence to make people not hate him or target him in the future. Lake had decided to leave the method up to her as he knew that she both held the power and intelligence to come up with a reasonable method. However, what Lake didn’t expect was that she would use the opportunity to advance her own goals.
It seems that she spread rumors of him being scouted by the Blackheart Guild, the guild run by her family.
When Lake first found out about this he didn’t know whether to cry or to laugh.
He knew that Kate was interested in recruiting him to her guild but she was very cautious in her approach which was why she had barely interacted with him or even made an attempt to recruit him. He also knew something she didn’t, he had already received an invitation to join her guild, however, due to it being addressed to The King, he wasn’t planning on capitalizing on it.
However Lake didn’t see any reason to notify the girl, and simply said he was willing to accept her offer if she did ever propose the idea, but he honestly didn’t care too strongly for the guild anyway.
Now, Lake wouldn’t mind signing a contract with her guild, so long as the contract benefits were able to meet his demands and the guild could fulfill some of his conditions.
While Lake was sitting in the classroom waiting for homeroom to start, he could see the jealous glares of a couple of students.
From Lake memories, these students were all students that were hovering around Kate when the class started.
It seems that they were students who were trying to form a connection with Kate in hopes of getting scouted by her guild.
When Lake saw their jealous gaze he only shook his head internally. Although her method made it so that he had the illusion of being protected by the Blackheart Guild, he wasn’t sure if the current situation was any better.
It was at that moment that the door of the classroom opened as Alec entered with a scruffy appearance.
Almost instantly, everyone became quiet as they turned to look at Alec.
Their sudden respectful nature wasn’t because they were showing respect for their teacher, but because of what day it was today.
At the opening ceremony, the principal of the academy clearly stated that today would be the day that the new Fairy race transfer students will be attending!
Yesterday they all received news that the fairy race would be attending their class through their smart band. When they first saw this news everyone was overly excited and some had trouble falling asleep last night.
Lake could see that although everyone was quiet now, they had a contained excitement burning in their eyes.
"Alright class, it’s your favorite teach bringing you some friendly guests from afar."
Alec spoke as he stood in front of the class.
Seeing everyone’s unusual silence he couldn’t help but smile.
He knew that everyone wanted to make a good impression on the fairy race but couldn’t help find their restrained expressions funny.
"As you all know, the Royals have signed an agreement with the Fairy race that has recently joined us on this continent. In that agreement it was stated that to improve relationships between the two races early, some of the young fairies from the fairy race would join us here at the academy in an attempt to integrate with our world better. I hope that you all can be welcoming to our foreign guests and not make them feel uncomfortable during their stay here."
At Alec’s instructions everyone nodded slightly as they were eagerly awaiting to see the mysterious fairy race for the first time.
"Alright, if everyone understands, let’s not keep our new friends waiting."
When Alec spoke, he gestured towards the opened door for someone to enter.
"You can come in now."
After he finished speaking, three people entered the classroom as everyone’s originally excited face turned into looks of astonishment.
Even Lake’s mouth was slightly agape in disbelief at what he was looking at.
"Hello, it is nice to meet you all. My name is Sylph and I will be attending classes with all of you from now on. I hope we can get along in the future."
An almost angelic voice sounded out from the fairy in the lead as the classroom descended into silence.
Seeing that everyone was strangely silent, the fairy that just introduced herself started to look around in a slight panic. It seems that she was nervous with everyone’s silent gazes.
When she didn’t know what to do she looked to Alec next to her with pitiful eyes. Alec, seeing it, only responded plainly, "Give them a minute."
When Sylph heard his reply she didn’t know what to do but in the next instance she heard a loud roaring sound that made her jump as her wings fluttered behind her.
"Woahhhhh!!!"
"Fuck! My heart can’t take this!"
"Restraint, brothers! Restraint!"
Everyone started talking loudly, no longer able to hold back their excitement.
Lake could see that the fairy that had just introduced herself seemed to be trembling slightly as she looked at everyone with a slightly terrified gaze.
Seeing everyone’s excitement, Lake could only sigh as he completely understood them.
Standing in front of the classroom were three fairies dressed in the academy uniform, their thin, translucent wings sticking out behind them.
Sylph, the girl who just introduced herself, had long green hair flowing down her back like a waterfall and brilliant emerald eyes that sparkled like a gem. Her face was refined and beautiful but held a child like innocence, looking like an angel that had descended from the heavens.
When everyone saw her frightened look from their sudden outburst, they felt like they had sinned as they once again fell back into silence.
The other two fairies stood behind Sylph and seemed to be much calmer compared to Sylph.
One was a male and the other female, both having blue hair and eyes. They were both gorgeous in their own regard but when compared to Sylph who stood in front of them, they seem to pale in comparison.
The male had a relaxed smile on his face while the female had a restrained and almost strict expression.
When Lake saw the male fairy, his eyes narrowed slightly as he felt that his own appearance seemed to be less handsome than his. He had to admit that the fairy race’s appearance truly surpassed his expectations.
When Lake thought of this he also realized that the fairy race had nothing to worry about when it came to fitting into human society. After all, with those appearances they shouldn’t have any problem fitting in with humans.
"Hehe, I’m sorry miss Sylph if my students’ behavior may have frightened you. I assure you that they are just really excited to meet you all so there’s no need to worry." Alec said as he smiled with a knowing look at the boys in the class that were clutching their chest.
"I-is that so?" Sylph replied as she nervously glanced around the classroom again. However, in that motion she spotted something slightly weird at the corner of her eyes.
"Why don’t the rest of you introduce yourself." Alec said as he looked at the two other students behind Sylph.
" ...Yes, I am Iris. It is a pleasure to meet you all." The other female spoke out dryly with a stiff expression.
"Haha, I am Bramble, it is a pleasure to meet you all as well." The male fairy introduced himself as he did a light bow.
"Alright, I know you all have questions that you wish to ask your new classmates but please show some restraint when speaking to them. Especially you lot!"
As Alec spoke he looked at a group of boys that sat in a corner of the classroom.
"What do you mean by that, teach?"
"Isn’t this blatant defamation?"
"Yeah! Don’t you know you’re harming the reputation of your students by saying such words?"
"I completely understand your worry, teach. But I assure you I have nothing to do with these buffoons."
"Traitor!"
"Get him, boys!"
Soon the classroom descended into chaos as everyone started asking rapid fire questions towards the group of fairies.
Sylph was overwhelmed with questions but still tried to answer them to the best of her abilities.
Bramble was asked some questions as well by some female students to which he replied politely with an aura of a gentleman around him, attracting both the attention of the girls in the class as well as the ire of the boys in the corner.
Iris was also asked some questions but seemed to be pretty stiff in her response. After a while the amount of questions she was asked continued to steadily decrease until she was able to silently return to her post of standing behind Sylph.
Lake looked at the group of fairies with interest as well. He had noticed something that at first left him stunned but now he was extremely curious.
Normally, most intelligent lifeforms have a strand of fate above their head that Lake could observe but above the fairies head, Lake could see no such thing. There wasn’t a single strand of fate anywhere near the fairies which left Lake slightly puzzled.
"Hmm? She’s been glancing this way for a while now." Lake thought to himself as he looked at Sylph from the back of the class.
"Alright, that’s enough questions. Classes will still continue on like normal so you all should prepare for your next class." Alec spoke out interrupting the chattering students.
"You three can take a seat somewhere in the classroom."
The group of fairies nodded to Alec before walking towards the row of seats.
Everyone’s eyes were shining as they silently prayed to their ancestors for one of the fairies to sit next to them. The boys were especially praying for Sylph to sit next to them as although their interaction was short, they had already regarded her as an angel in their hearts.
However, with each row of seats that she walked past, these boys felt their heart break.
Soon Sylph walked all the way to the back of the classroom with the other two still following behind her.
She stood in front of Lake as she looked him in the eye.
"Fuck, I have a bad feeling about this..."
Lake silently thought to himself.
"If it isn’t any trouble, may I sit next to you?"
Lake felt the temperature in the classroom drop to a freezing cold as the gazes of hate that had gradually disappeared returned in greater force in an instant.
