Chapter 66: Practical Training
Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Practical Training
Later that day, the students of the Sacred Class gathered in the training hall of the Academy.
In front of the group of students stood a tall instructor with his arms folded and head held high.
He looked down at the group of chattering students before him.
Some students were talking in low voices with each other while others just looked at the instructor waiting for the class to begin.
Lake belonged to the latter and was quietly observing the fate of the instructor to pass time.
After a minute or two had passed and the instructor could still see that students were talking, he raised his foot before stomping down, releasing a loud bang and a ripple of shockwaves that echoed through the hall.
The shockwaves caused the students that were chattering to turn their gaze towards the instructor. As their gaze met his they felt a heavy aura of oppression descend onto them that made them subconsciously lowered their heads.
When the aura descended, the chattering students finally quieted down as they looked at the instructor before them.
"My name is Bane and I will be your class’ Practical Combat Instructor. Let this be known now that I hate those who are disrespectful. If any of you were to show even the slightest hint of disrespect to me, I don’t mind increasing the difficulty of your training to challenge levels of impossible difficulty, got that?"
"Yes Sir!"
As Instructor Bane spoke, the students that were previously talking had already fallen into line and responded to Bane’s question.
"Practical Training is self explanatory so I won’t explain what the class is about, but what you need to know is that my class will have the biggest impact on your future achievements whether it be as a hunter or soldier. If you dare to slack off during my lessons, it is at your own downfall. Do you understand?"
Hearing Bane’s words, everyone replied again to which Bane nodded in response.
"Good, now follow me."
Bane turned around and started walking towards a shop-like interface on the wall. The interface was completely holographic and Bane touched his hand on it before scrolling through.
As his hand swiped across the screen, several different training weapons appeared on the screen.
"Personal Weapons are banned on Academy grounds to prevent students from harming one another by accident. However, some students’ martial arts rely on weapons in order to be performed so the school provides a free training weapon at the start of classes. If you wish to get another training weapon after this or your current one is damaged, you will have to use points to purchase a new one so I recommend treating the free one well. You should also choose a weapon that you are already familiar with so that future training may go well."
"Now that’s everything has been said, students can start coming up one by one to choose a weapon."
After hearing Bane’s words, a few students had become slightly anxious while the rest remained calm. Since they were already here at the academy, they were aware that they already had some level of training when it comes to weapon arts as the entrance test this year had relied heavily on students using them.
As for the ones who were anxious, they weren’t anxious about the weapon, but about the cost to get a new one. Lake could see that Allen was the most anxious out of all of them.
If Lake remembered correctly, he should be the descendant of the Hundred Weapons Grandmaster. His entire fighting style revolved around using multiple weapons so the current situation must be really hard for him.
Soon several students started walking up to pick their own weapons. Once they chose one, it would be transferred to a nearby counter for the student to go pick up.
Lake saw several students pick up swords and spears as their basic weapons with some purchasing shields to go along with it.
Kate picked up a bow and purchased a sword along with it while both Bradford and Allen chose swords.
After some time had passed, almost all the students had picked up a weapon.
In total, 7 people chose to use swords, 8 people chose spears and 3 chose to use bows with most of them purchasing secondary weapons.
At the moment there were only two students left to choose a weapon.
Lake was one of them as he stood there thinking for a while.
He had been stuck in a dilemma ever since he learned that he had to pick a weapon.
At the moment, Lake didn’t know which weapon to choose. This wasn’t to say that he wasn’t good at any weapon, but that he was simply good at everything!
Thanks to the Weapon Master Skill, Lake could wield any weapon with advanced proficiency. Because of this Lake wasn’t sure which weapon to choose as he had no preference to go off of.
Looking for answers, Lake started going through his list of skills looking for inspiration when he suddenly saw something that got him thinking.
After thinking about it some more, he decided to just go along with it and walked up to the interface to choose his weapon after the last student finished choosing his.
After picking it up from the counter, he walked back to the rest of the students who were familiarizing themselves with their new weapons.
"Alright, now that everyone has successfully chosen a weapon we can begin practical training. Since this is the first class I’ll give everyone a chance to familiarize themselves with their weapon through light sparring with each other. Your sparring partner will be the second rank below you. First will spar with third, second will spar with fourth and so on."
After listening to Bane’s instruction, Lake turned around to look for his sparring partner. From his memory, third place should be Kate.
When he thought of this he turned to look for Kate but when his eyes landed on her he was momentarily stunned by her changing facial expression.
From anxious to annoyed to resigned before finally settling on a polite smile, all of it happened in less than a second.
Lake had never seen someone capable of changing expressions so fast and since it all happened in an instant, he wondered if his eyes were playing tricks on him.
"I hope you can go easy on me." Kate said as she walked up to Lake.
After regaining his senses, Lake nodded slightly in response as he silently thought to himself, "She’s almost as fake as me."
After greeting each other they both walked towards a vacant stage.
The training hall had many stages for students to use as sparring grounds. Since Kate used a bow, they used a walled off stage to prevent her arrows from flying astray and hitting other students.
After Kate went to the other side of the stage she spoke, "Are you ready to begin?"
"Ready whenever you are. You can make the first move." Lake spoke as he clenched his hands a few times.
Lake wasn’t looking but Kate’s eyes twitched at Lake’s casual response.
Without hesitation she raised her bow before quickly letting another arrow fly.
Whoosh!
With the sound of wind being cut, Kate’s arrow flew towards Lake as she smiled coldly.
The arrow heads were blunted so they wouldn’t do any serious damage, however, they would still hurt a lot.
"Dare to be so arrogant, let’s see if an arrow to the head can knock some sense into you."
Kate silently thought as the arrow approached Lake. She had analyzed Lake’s exam video several times and had already come to a grasp of his strength.
Although he could be considered physically strong, he lacked proper combat techniques.
Kate wasn’t someone who slacked off since young. After she saw the results of the entrance exam, besides doing research on Lake and the other candidates, she kept herself busy training hard for when she finally entered the Academy.
As a result, she managed to push her Fitness Index to 1.41, closing the gap that existed between Lake and her physical strength.
Unfortunately, the gap Kate had created in her head between Lake and herself was based on the results he had shown during the entrance exam. Since then, Lake had already gone through a complete transformation.
Clink!
With the sound of metal hitting metal, Kate’s eyes widened slightly as she looked ahead of her.
An arrow slowly fell to the ground as Lake lowered his raised hand.
Gauntlets. This was the weapon Lake chose after thinking about it for a long time.
Since he could proficiently wield any weapon, it didn’t matter which weapon Lake chose from a proficiency standpoint, so in the end he chose something that could compliment one of his other skills.
Steel Body Martial Arts.
Originally used to strengthen his body to the peak of the Martial Apprentice Realm, it was now one of Lake’s most powerful martial arts from a destructive perspective, with the devastating power a single move from one of the stances held.
The reason why Lake chose gauntlets was for two reasons.
One of the reasons was that the gauntlets were hard and sturdy and could be used as both a protective shield and a blunt weapon. The fingers of the gauntlets also had sharp claws that could be used offensively.
The other reason was that the Academy had already started to grasp the essence of Mana Tech and the gauntlets had a strengthening effect on the arm when mana was injected into it. This would allow Lake to push his strength to another level, now able to double the force he could put out with half the effort.
But of course, Lake didn’t plan to go all out during this sparring session.
After seeing Lake block her arrow Kate didn’t dare to play around anymore. After all, this was still a sparring session, no need to sit around being shocked. If you doubt something, just test it with your own strength.
Without saying anything, she raised her bow as she quickly shot another arrow towards Lake, this time, with a second one following closely after.
Clink! Clink!
Two more arrows fell to the ground as Lake smiled.
After personally feeling the force behind her arrows, Lake had a rough estimate of the proper strength he should use when fighting her.
Feeling like there was no more need to wait around, Lake dashed forward at a controlled speed, neither too fast nor too slow.
But even though Lake was running much slower than he could, in Kate’s eyes, it looked like Lake was quickly closing the gap between them.
Jumping back, Kate drew her bow once more before shooting another arrow.
This time Lake didn’t block the arrow and casually moved to the side, dodging it completely.
Before Kate could stabilize herself and draw another arrow, Lake was already standing in front of her with his hands raised.
Seeing his fist fast approaching her, Kate raised her bow to block.
However, before Lake’s fist came into contact with the bow, he stopped it almost instantly, grabbing the bow instead with his hand before sending his other fist flying towards her abdomen.
This caught Kate off guard as she hurriedly released her bow and jumped back, drawing her sword at the same time.
She didn’t know when, but her back had already been covered in cold sweat in that short exchange.
Each move Lake made was simple yet Kate could feel an almost instinctual warning screaming at her that if any one of Lake’s attacks had connected, she would have been killed.
This wasn’t to say that Kate felt weaker or scared of Lake but that all of his attacks were truly lethal.
Whether Lake knew it or not, the Master Assassin role had completely remodeled his basic instincts and attack pattern. Now every single attack, whether subconscious or not, contained a hint of lethality that could kill a normal person.
Right now, although Lake was holding back, Kate felt that her life was in danger during this supposedly ’light spar’.
