Chapter 56: The Facility
Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Facility
Lake stood there for a moment before he asked, "Why should I help you?"
Although he was curious about the facility and its purpose, he wasn’t going to be used by the AI, at least not for free.
"The system can provide a reward for your participation."
It seems that the system understood his intention and replied immediately.
"What can you offer me?"
"The system has access to a large wealth of information about the facility and related information about its operation. If you help fix the operating system, I can provide answers to any inquiries you may have about the facility."
When Lake heard the system’s reply, he paused for a moment in thought. He was interested in the strange facility and its background, so the system’s reward did indeed pique his interest.
However, he felt that he could still get a larger reward. After thinking for a bit, he asked, "What do you know about the fruit that grows atop this tree?"
"The Fruit of Evolution is a unique fruit that grows atop the Golden White Tree. The fruit possesses the ability to enhance the genetic structure of a lifeform. If you wish to learn more please proceed to follow the pathway that has opened up and follow the system’s instruction."
Lake was intrigued by the system’s reply. Since the system was already withholding information, Lake doubted that he would get anything more from it if he were to continue asking.
Hearing the loud sounds of battle in the distance, Lake didn’t hesitate any longer before walking into the new passage.
The corridor was dark and as Lake entered, the door behind him closed shut, sinking the hall into total darkness.
Suddenly Lake heard a sound like an engine’s roar as he saw various lights start to turn on, lighting up the passage ahead with a bright white light.
"Please proceed to follow the lit up path."
Heeding the system’s instructions, Lake decided to follow along. He was curious to see where the system would lead him. As for concern for his safety, Lake wasn’t worried.
With the level two Master of Stealth Skill, if Lake wanted to disappear from the system’s surveillance, he could do it with little more than a thought.
Following the path, he was led to a circular platform. When Lake saw it, he was reminded of the elevator he had seen in the Martial Arts Association.
Stepping onto it, Lake felt a familiar force field surround the platform as he started to quickly ascend up the tree.
The walls of the elevator were transparent which allowed Lake to see the various facilities as he went up.
There were various labs with strange equipment he had never seen before and liquid chambers with strange decaying corpses floating inside them. All of the rooms seem to be covered in thick layers of dust, which attested to how long it had been since the facility was in use.
"What is this place?" Lake asked the system, testing to see if he could get a response. To his pleasant surprise it seemed that the system was more willing to answer now that he was inside the facility.
"This is the Genetic Modification Facility designed for the breeding and captivity of genetically enhanced super creatures. This is the thirty-first Genetic Modification Facility to be created and has received the code name Garden."
When Lake heard the system’s answer, he was stunned for a moment but quickly recovered and asked his next question.
"You say this is a facility designed for the breeding and captivity of creatures. Can I assume that the creatures outside and the area they live in are a part of the Garden?"
"Yes. Approximately 300 kilometers out from the Golden White Tree in all directions are within the testing grounds of the Garden."
"Who created the garden and for what reason?"
"The Garden was created by The Architects, a highly intelligent and highly technologically advanced race. They created the Garden to produce modified monsters and creatures that could be controlled and used for battle."
When Lake heard the system’s reply, he frowned. However, before he could continue asking questions, the elevator came to a stop as a lit up path appeared before him.
"Please follow the designated path and quickly complete the repairs."
When Lake saw the path appeared, he tried asking the system another question but didn’t get a reply. After realizing that the system wasn’t going to give a reply until he completed the repairs, Lake sighed as he walked forward.
Soon he came to a room similar to a server room filled with various computer screens, hardware components and wires.
It was then that the system began to instruct him on how to repair the operating system. With a sigh, Lake began to focus on completing the repair so that he could continue asking questions.
...
Outside the Golden White Tree, the battle between the two sides was still ongoing.
The area around the tree was devastated from the impacts of the battle. Chunks of ice and craters of scorched earth littered the battlefield.
During the battle, the Skylark held the advantage and kept pressing the Wolf King and the Empress on defense. There were a few times that they had the chance to attack the Skylark however their attacks couldn’t reach the Skylark who remained high up in the sky and for the few that did, they were blocked or dodged by the Skylark.
The Skylark’s revenge after these attacks were also quite devastating with the Empress and the Wolf King almost losing their lives among the rain of lightning.
While the attacks between the two sides were quickly intensifying, the Empress was also leading the battle closer to the Golden White Tree.
She had realized that the Skylark seemed to refrain from releasing lightning attacks near the tree and decided to rush towards it along with the Wolf King.
This only served to anger the Skylark even more. However, since they were now closer to the tree, the Skylark had stopped using lightning based attacks and dived towards the pair on the ground, releasing a loud shriek.
When the Empress had seen this, she felt greatly relieved as now they could at least fight back.
With the Skylark diving down, the Wolf King howled as he shot several spears of ice towards it.
The Empress took this chance to start threading a trap of silk-like web she secreted from her fingertips.
As the Skylark dived down, it used its large wings to swipe at the ice spears, shattering them into countless shards. However, some of the spears had managed to slip through its defense, piercing into its flesh.
The Skylark, feeling the pain of its flesh being pierced, released a ferocious shriek as lightning started to spark around its body.
Without hesitation, the Skylark dived straight for the Wolf King as a trail of lightning branched off from its body behind it.
The Wolf King howled again before creating a barrier of ice around himself.
*BOOM!!*
With the sound of thunder cracking and ice shattering, the Wolf King’s ice barrier was destroyed as the Skylark’s large body crashed into the ground.
The Wolf King was held between its claws as the Skylark’s arrogant eyes glared down at it. Lightning started to arc across the Skylark’s body as its feather rustled in a beautiful manner. Its purple eyes started to glow with energy as it opened its beak, prepared to evaporate the Wolf King in the next attack.
At that moment, a thick strand of intertwined thread wrapped around the Skylark’s beak, snapping it shut.
The Wolf King noticed the opportunity and summoned another ice spear, launching this one straight into the Skylark’s throat. The spear pierced the Skylark’s throat but didn’t penetrate deeply.
The Skylark realized that it was at a disadvantage and flapped its wings, prepared to temporarily retreat.
However, to its dismay, when it flew up, its wings got caught in a layer of web, keeping it trapped to the floor.
When the Skylark was focused on the Wolf King, the Empress took this chance to create a net above its body, connecting it to the Golden White Tree and the ground.
The web wrapped itself around the Skylark’s large body, sticking to its wings and preventing it from flying off.
The Wolf King took this chance to get up from the ground. The impact from the Skylark landing on him had taken a toll with various bruises and cuts covering his body.
Looking at the Skylark that had been trapped by the webs, the Wolf King and the Empress were prepared to launch a fierce counterattack on the beast. However, before they could even make a move, a bright light was emitted from the Skylark’s body as electricity began to spark off its body, melting the web that had encased its body.
"SHRIEK!!" With a loud scream, the Skylark broke free from the entanglement as lightning discharged around its body, scorching the earth around it and melting the ice spears that were stabbed into its body.
After breaking free from the entanglement, the Skylark turned its wrathful eyes towards the Wolf King and the Empress.
The two looked at the Skylark with a mix of terror, anger and the intent to kill filling their eyes. They knew that it was going to be a tough fight to defeat the Skylark, otherwise they wouldn’t have chosen to work together.
However, they didn’t expect the Skylark to be so powerful that their attacks only left minor injuries on its massive body.
It was at that point, as the Skylark was about to rush towards the two and continue the battle that a loud ripple of energy burst forth from the Golden White Tree.
As the Skylark felt the pulse, it released a loud roar as its head began to throb in pain. In fact, it wasn’t just the Skylark that was roaring in pain but all the beasts throughout the Garden were screaming out.
Lake, who had just finished the repairs of the system’s main operating system, observed all of this as it happened on a monitor screen inside a white lab room.
