Chapter 174: Chapter 174: Three-Headed Serpent Hunt (5)
Lake’s eyes were locked on the corrupted fate. He had seen how it glowed when the creature came back to life.
He didn’t know if the creature came back to life as a result of its natural abilities or if there was some other influence behind it.
"How are we supposed to kill something that can regenerate from death?" Romero asked, his face grim. Despite the previous battle ending more quickly than expected thanks to Lake’s and the Alpha Wolf’s support, he was still somewhat exhausted from launching those powerful attacks consecutively.
"This is out of our level range, kid." Leno, on the other hand, seemed calmer, yet even his hand that was holding his spear was shaking a little. "Let’s retreat for now."
Since the students had already retreated to a safe distance, there was no need for him to continue risking his life on the frontlines.
Hearing Leno’s suggestion for retreat, Romero seemed slightly deflated but also relieved. He really didn’t want to fight against a creature that could just regenerate a head like that.
"There’s no need to retreat." Suddenly, Lake spoke, his gaze still locked on the Serpent as his ears perked up. He had picked up the sound of something fast approaching from the west.
Leno, however, seemed fed up with Lake’s constant nonsense and was about to say something but was quickly silenced when he heard a loud explosion echo from the bay. Shockwaves traveled through the air, causing his clothes to flutter violently.
Turning around to see what happened, Leno saw that the newly regenerated central head of the Serpent had been blown to pieces!
Leno could barely make out the figure of a man standing on the neck of what remained of the central head. He was dressed in a black trench coat and had a cigarette in his mouth as he held up a lighter to his face.
When Lake saw who the figure was, he subconsciously smiled and said, "My insurance has arrived."
****
Alec stood atop the neck of the Serpent, holding the cigarette in his hand as he exhaled a breath of smoke. "Haah, I seriously need to ask for a raise after this trip."
As Alec finished speaking, however, the left and right heads of the Serpent had already sneaked up beside him, their mouths wide open as two wind bullets were shot at him simultaneously!
The wind bullets flew towards him, cutting off his path of retreat, while the two heads threatened to swallow him if he moved from his current position.
However, even in this situation, which would’ve spelled certain doom for Romero or Leno, Alec seemed unusually calm. Putting the cigarette back in his mouth, he expanded his Mana Field.
The moment his Mana Field came into contact with the wind bullets, it was as if a powerful force had crushed them from all sides, completely dispelling them in a matter of seconds.
When the two heads felt the pressure of Alec’s Mana Field, they instinctively knew that the man in front of them was not to be messed with. They tried to escape underwater, where they would have the advantage, but before they could move, Alec stretched out his hands as an immense gravitational force suddenly pulled them in!
Once the two heads were caught in his hands, Alec breathed out another puff of smoke as he held the cigarette between his teeth.
RIP!
The sound of flesh being stretched and torn sounded out as Alec ripped the two heads of the Serpent off!
Splash!
Just like that, the massive body of the Serpent fell once more into the water as the decapitated heads floated to the side.
Alec took the cigarette out of his mouth as he observed the Serpent’s body. Despite having ripped its heads off, he could still sense a faint hint of life throughout its body, and as if expected, the buds of the necks started to bubble up as new tissue began to replace the damaged ones.
"That’s one hell of a regeneration ability." Alec frowned as he pressed his foot down on the bubbling neck of the central head.
BOOM!
Mana was released from his foot, exploding as it made contact with the regenerating neck, repeatedly destroying the recovered tissue.
"One of the most basic principles of energy states that it can neither be created nor destroyed," As Alec spoke, he placed the cigarette back in his mouth as his two hands extended out, pulling the regenerating necks of the other two heads back into his grasp, "That means there has to be a limit to your regeneration."
With his hands and feet now connected to each head of the Serpent, Alec smiled as he exhaled smoke through his nose and mouth. "So let’s test whether a Martial Grandmaster would run out of energy first, or if you’ll hit your limit!"
BOOM!
Consecutive explosions rang out across the bay as Alec continued to explode the Serpent’s heads, sending waves crashing through the bay as its tail violently wailed behind it. At one point, the Serpent had gone under the water, but Alec held on and even reared it back up to the surface.
Lake, and everyone else, stayed by the shore as they watched the spectacle unfold before them. Romero and Leno were slightly shocked when they saw Alec appear out of nowhere, but they quickly became excited, seeing his appearance as a godsend blessing.
At one point, even the students who had retreated back to the mainland returned to the shore to watch the spectacle unfold before them.
Lake also stood quietly and watched along with them, his eyes never once leaving the corrupted fate. Even with the central head destroyed, the corrupted fate still seemed to be connected to the Serpent’s body, making him ponder.
After ten minutes of Alec wrestling with the Serpent, he realized that the Serpent’s regeneration speed still hadn’t slowed down, and had even gotten faster!
Alec began to sweat a little when he realized this. ’There’s no way I lose this, right?’
[Attack the core.]
Suddenly, Alec was startled to hear a voice in his head, but when he looked around, he didn’t detect anyone nearby.
"Lake?"
[Don’t bother looking, I’m speaking to you from the shore.]
Alec was slightly startled by Lake’s reply as he turned to observe the shore, but there were just too many people who had gathered to watch his fight that he couldn’t pinpoint Lake’s position.
[The Serpent should have a core somewhere within its body. That’s the source of its regeneration power. Follow the black lines on its body, and you should be able to find it.]
This time Alec didn’t say anything as he started to carefully observe the Serpent’s neck. He was quick to spot the black veins crawling over its scales that seemed to be pumping out a sticky black substance that covered the injured tissue.
Once the tissue was covered, it would then start to bubble up and regenerate. Alec paused his attack and allowed it to regenerate as he turned around to follow the black veins along its body. However, it was far too difficult to track down the source of the black veins, as they twisted and wrapped around the entire Serpent’s massive body.
Alec paused in contemplation for a moment but quickly came to a solution. Jumping further down the central neck, he decapitated it at the base, where the three necks met.
BANG!
With a loud explosion, the central neck was blown away from the rest of the body as chunks of meat and flesh flew everywhere. Alec carefully observed the open wound before noting that it was starting to regenerate.
He then proceeded to explode both the left and right heads off the body and saw that both also regenerated from the base of the neck.
"That eliminates the heads." Turning around, Alec watched the sixty-meter tail behind the Serpent that sank into the water.
Sighing, he dove straight in before arriving at the midpoint of the tail.
Since he didn’t want to waste time tracking down the veins, he would just blow off pieces of its body until it started regenerating from the exploded side. From there, he could find the core.
Explosions continued to ring out from beneath the water as massive waves came crashing into the shore.
The students were slightly startled when they saw the ten-foot-tall waves about to crash into them along with the frenzied sea monsters.
However, now that the Rank Three creature had been mostly incapacitated, the rest of the students and hunters were a lot more willing to fight against the sea creatures, starting the second round of the hunt.
Kate quickly assumed the position of commander as she led the students to fight back. Since the valley had been destroyed, however, this fight was more like a free-for-all as everyone led their own teams into the thick of the fight.
Lake, who stood at the back and observed everything, was quietly collecting fates while occasionally casting a few spells to back up any students that were getting overwhelmed by the endless tide.
Honestly, Lake estimated that they had killed a little over two thousand sea creatures at this point, but they haven’t even put a dent in their total force. Just from the Web of Fate alone, Lake estimated that at least fifty thousand sea creatures lived in the bay.
However, even though Lake knew that this fight was impossible to win, he still continued to watch everyone struggle to fight, getting repeatedly injured and healed by Sylph. They had long been covered in blood, and a portion of the waters near the shore had even turned red.
Lake knew that this was an important chance for everyone to improve their skills through real combat experience, so he continued to support them from behind.
Eventually, a few minutes passed like this, and countless corpses of sea creatures had already piled up on the shore and floated in the water, creating a sea of corpses and rivers of blood.
At that point, a loud explosion rang out from the center of the bay as the figure of Alec burst out of the waters. He was drenched in water, and his already messy hair had become even messier as it sagged down in front of his face.
He breathed heavily as the various pieces of the Serpent that had been blown to pieces rose to the surface. In his hand, he held a dark gemstone he had dug out from the Serpent’s stomach.
"Found it," Alec muttered, eyeing the gemstone with a mix of relief and exhaustion.
