Chapter 172: Chapter 172: Three Headed Serpent Hunt (3)
While Romero was recovering, Lake had taken up position as support for Leno, who was frantically dodging the flurry of wind bullets that shot his way.
With both hands raised, he would shift and raise the earth to defend, propel, and maneuver him out of the way.
[Left.]
Leno moved in response to his command, barely dodging a wind bullet as the ground under him rapidly rose up.
[Jump.]
Taking the momentum from the rising ground, Leno jumped up, propelling him towards the side as another wind bullet came flying straight towards him.
[Deflect backwards.]
Clang!
The sound of metal hitting against the tremendous force of the wind bullet sounded out as Leno used his spear to absorb some of the impact while deflecting it, causing him to spin rapidly as he flew backwards.
As he landed on the ground, his feet dug into the ground, decreasing his spinning momentum as he stabilized himself. By the time he had come to a stop, another order had come as he jumped away from the seemingly never-ending barrage.
Leno wasn’t sure what was going on, but ever since he started hearing Lake’s voice in his head, he felt compelled to follow his orders as if they were crying out to him from the deepest part of his soul.
He initially wanted to resist these orders as he was unsure of their origins or intent, but when the rain of wind bullets came crashing down, some part of him told him that he was going to die if he didn’t follow these orders.
This led to a tactic cooperation between the two that was made entirely possible thanks to Lake’s new use of his Empathy skill combined with his King’s Aura.
By merging Empathy’s ability to link emotions with others and King’s Aura’s commanding presence, he had created an almost irresistible force that reached deep into a person’s subconscious, compelling them to instinctively obey. Utilizing a telepathy spell to relay precise commands, he had established an almost instantaneous command system that elicited immediate and amplified responses from those under his influence.
Naturally, Leno was surprised, much like Romero, when he first heard Lake’s voice in his head, but he quickly got used to it and used it to his advantage to defend against the Serpent’s continued attacks.
Lake himself stood a distance away from the battlefield, watching everything within his vision that could even pierce through the fog. Thanks to his Stealth skill, he didn’t have to worry about the Serpent attacking him, as he already recognized that it was targeting its enemy based on mana levels.
Since Romero and Leno had the highest mana levels out of everyone here, it targeted them first, aiming to take out the biggest threats first. Luckily, Lake’s Stealth skill was capable of concealing both his presence and mana, which wasn’t even big enough in the first place to draw the Serpent’s attention.
As he continued to conjure several walls to block the relentless wind bullet while maintaining his telepathy, Lake could feel his small mana pool slowly being expanded thanks to the rapid use and replenishment of his mana.
At the current rate, his mana capacity has probably increased by at least forty percent! The last time Lake checked his mana stat, it was already at 7, meaning his mana stat had increased by almost three points since the battle had started!
’It seems like this fight had its unexpected perks. At this rate, I might be able to reach Martial Warrior!’ Lake thoughts wondered for a moment but quickly refocused on the fight.
Although his mana was increasing rapidly, he would still have to check it personally once the system came back online to know by just how much it had actually increased.
At that moment, the wind bullets that had been raining down on Leno for the last three minutes had suddenly stopped.
Lake, who could see through the fog, saw the central head of the serpent pause in contemplation. Its other two heads swept their gaze across the battlefield, as if looking for something.
As Lake tried to guess its thoughts, he suddenly saw it raise all three heads to the sky, releasing its iconic roar.
However, this time, the roar felt different. Lake could sense the subtle bit of mana infused into the roar as soundwaves traveled throughout the bay.
Expanding his sixth sense, he tried to find out what was different and quickly spotted an anomaly.
"The sea beasts! They’re retreating!"
The violent sea beasts that had charged onto the shore to fight with the students and hunters with little regard for their own lives had suddenly stopped their attack, frantically rushing back towards the waters.
Lake took the lull in the Serpent’s attack to fly up with an invisibility spell. Observing the sea beasts’ movements, he realized they were retreating further into the water and the fog.
Kate also seemed to have noticed this and gave the order for the ranged hunters to focus fire on the retreating enemy, allowing them to kill a little less than two hundred of them while they swam.
By the time all of them had retreated out of the valley, Lake realized that the Serpent had started to produce more mist, covering the retreating sea beasts and increasing the density of the fog, somewhat blocking even Lake’s vision.
’Is it going further into hiding?’ Lake frowned as he tried to figure out what the Serpent was plotting.
Leno was breathing heavily after that last exchange. He didn’t have much time to recover his stamina during the high-intensity barrage, so he was taking the chance to rest.
[I need you to clear the fog.]
When Leno heard the sudden order, he was somewhat exhausted but pushed himself to prepare an attack.
However, before he could swing his spear, he suddenly felt a hand press down on his shoulder.
"Let me."
Turning around, Leno was surprised to see Romero, who had both his hands recovered!
"How?" Leno was at a loss for words, seeing Romero’s completely healed arms, as he didn’t know about Sylph’s healing ability.
"The world is in for a shock in the near future. For now, let me handle the fog while you rest up." Romero laughed a little as he patted Leno on the back before walking forward.
Lake saw that Romero had made a full recovery and felt that his chances at taking this fight had increased drastically.
’It’s my first time seeing Sylph’s healing ability be used on such a heavily injured person. If it can allow him to recover to that extent within such a short time, it would be better than even my advanced healing spells.’ Lake thought briefly as Sylph’s value rose a little in his head.
While Lake was quietly observing, Romero had already assumed a stance, drawing in mana as a golden aura began to envelop him, growing brighter and more intense with each passing second.
With a surge of energy, he was fully charged and unleashed a devastating punch, sending a shockwave through the air and clearing a vast area of the mist with a thunderous boom.
Whoosh!
As the mist dissipated, Lake’s vision pierced through the thinning veil, revealing the ominous figure of the Serpent, who had already gathered a large amount of mana in the throats of each head.
Lake’s eyes widened in alarm upon seeing the highly condensed mana in its throat. Reacting in an instant, he cast a powerful spell, raising a colossal earth pillar from the sea floor to shield the students. Amplifying his voice with mana, he bellowed, "GET DOWN!"
SCREEEECH!
A shrill noise, like the screech of a high-pitched rocket, sliced through the air as an invisible, blade-like blast of wind flew toward them with immense force.
BOOM!
Lake’s earth pillar shattered instantly, sending debris flying in all directions. The valley behind it was devastated, and the carefully prepared terrain was obliterated, allowing seawater to flood in through the newly created breach.
Despite the destruction, Lake’s pillar had mitigated some of the impact, leaving the students only slightly injured and dazed.
But the peril was far from over—the sea beasts now had a clear path to swarm and attack, and as if to signal the order, a loud howl emanated from deep within the fog.
"Fall back!" Kate’s voice rang out, urgent and commanding.
Since the strategic advantage of the valley had been destroyed, it was pointless to stay and get surrounded by the hundreds of remaining sea beasts.
Lake said nothing about Kate’s order as he flew down to the ground.
The sea beast that had previously retreated had already started to enter the valley from the newly created path at this point, yet Lake only gave them a casual glance.
’The sea beasts can be ignored from here on out.’
Since the sea beast couldn’t really travel on land to begin with, Lake never really saw them as a big threat.
Contrary to what he had told the students and other hunters, the original purpose of his preparation wasn’t actually to kill the serpent or all the sea beasts. It was meant to be used as a distraction for the Rank Three creature and any other beasts to buy time for the other hunters near the shore to retreat.
That’s right, even during all this chaos and madness, Lake hadn’t once forgotten his original intentions in deciding to face off against this leviathan of a creature.
’To collect RP points and restore order to the Web of Fate.’
Since the start of the battle, he had been collecting the loose fates of the dead creatures and had already gathered a large amount in a short time, successfully completing the first objective.
As for restoring order to the Web of Fate, ’The first part involved saving the endangered fates of the nearby hunters, while the second part involved...’
Whistle!
Lake whistled out as the figure of the Alpha Wolf appeared beside him, accompanied by a loud sonic boom.
Getting on top of the Wolf King’s back, Lake gave the order as it appeared besides Romero and Leno in the next instant, slightly startling them.
Even for Martial Masters, it would seem that the Wolf King’s top running speed was enough to catch even them somewhat off guard.
"Get on. The real hunt starts now."
