Chapter 127: Returning to the Academy
Chapter 127: Chapter 127: Returning to the Academy
Time passed slowly, and soon the nightmarish night came to an end.
As the sun rose on the next day, most of the chaos in the city had been dealt with but people still felt a small lingering fear deep within them.
What if the terrorists decide to attack again? The hunters had arrived on the scene but by then thousands had died. What would have happened if they had arrived any later? Would everyone be dead?
With that small fear rooted in their minds, many were questioning whether they were truly safe or if they were just paranoid of their surroundings.
The government knew that there was nothing they could do to calm the people down as this event was one of the biggest tragedies to happen after The Disaster.
However, unlike the previous tragedies, this one wasn’t the result of beasts or rifts, but of fellow humans.
The peoples hatred for Prestige had peaked and the government had taken the chance to capitalize on the opportunity to quell the unease in the population.
Transforming their fear into hatred, a fire had been ignited in the people’s heart, one that would burn for generations to come.
Prestige was originally one of the continents biggest tumors, but after tonight’s incident, their threat level has been reevaluated to be on the same level as the rifts themselves.
However, not all hope was lost.
From tonight, many people gained a small memory that would forever remain in their minds.
The vague figure of a young man remained stuck in the heads of the people with a strange feeling buried deep within their hearts.
That feeling wouldn’t go away no matter how hard they tried and constantly reminded them of the man’s figure.
Most people didn’t even get to see his face as they all kept their heads subconsciously lowered but the strong impression he left was what made him unforgettable.
That feeling of awe and reverence.
They didn’t think they would forget that even after a long time had passed.
....
After the initial chaos was settled, Lake and the rest were given priority to use the repaired transfer station in the morning.
It was a form of thanks from the officials of Moonbright City for their help with dealing with the aftermath.
This wouldn’t have normally happened but Lake had played a major role in calming the unrest among the people.
The ability to use the transfer station first after its repair was just a small token of appreciation from them.
Lake felt that it was quite lucky that not many people knew about the true details of King’s Aura.
Because he never used King’s Aura to affect any human before while disguised, no one should be able to make the connection between him and The King.
At most, they would just be suspicious but with his Master of Fate abilities, he could turn suspicion into nothing by manipulating fate a little.
Moreover, he wouldn’t have to worry too much about the government looking for him.
Although he had played a role in a few of the deaths in the Theater, overall, he had played an even larger role in stopping the plot of the terrorist group and quite possibly saved more lives than what was lost.
Although the government may have wanted to put him on trial for performing unnecessary actions that endangered the lives of many, his previous actions would have outweighed the demerits and he would have been able to walk away after getting a warning at the least, or a few days detainment at most.
Because of this, Lake knew that the government wouldn’t care enough to find him.
The people he had to look out for were the guilds.
Unlike the government, they don’t care too much about his actions, but his talent.
Recruiting a powerful hunter was always a goal for the guilds, and Lake, who was shown to be capable of controlling a Gargoyle on the level of a Martial Master, was the ideal candidate.
After he had settled the demons, he had spent most of his time hiding in the storm, using the mana around him to fuel his Writer of Fate ability as he prevented people who had a high chance of connecting the dots between him and the King.
Whether it be some trouble coming their way to distract them, or a fortunate encounter that would give them no time to think about him, Lake employed all kinds of tricks to save himself from the trouble of dealing with guild recruiters.
One of the people he had to spend the most time on was Arthur Blackheart, Kate’s father.
He spent most of his time editing his fate so that he wouldn’t come looking for him in the future, but it took far too much mana to change the fate of a Martial Grandmaster who was so close to becoming a Martial Lord.
Even with the support of the mana storm, Lake felt that he would be there all night if he tried to change his fate to stop him from interacting with him.
In the end, Lake ended up just settling for him being unable to find the King.
It didn’t mean that he would be able to avoid him like he could with the others whose fate he had edited, but it did mean that at least Lake wouldn’t have to worry about Arthur finding his identity.
Honestly, Lake didn’t think there was any need to go through all that trouble.
He would eventually reveal his identity in the future so doing all this now felt quite meaningless.
The only reason he decided to go so far was to avoid wasting even more time in the city. He still had the main quest to do back at the academy so staying around just to clarify and identify what could be dealt with in the future would be bothersome.
He would rather focus on the quest than his reputation.
With these thoughts in mind, Lake walked out of the transfer station back at the academy.
Hana stretched lazily as she yawned.
"Ahhh, It feels good to be back."
"I know what you mean, I feel exhausted after last night’s work."
"Don’t talk about it. I feel like my brain is going to explode from the voices of civilians shouting. I could still hear them echoing in my head..."
Hana, Landur and Jayce all had bags under their eyes.
Although they could replenish their stamina using mana, it didn’t do much for their mental fatigue from dealing with hundreds of complaining civilians in one night.
"Ahaha..." Gwen laughed drily, "Sorry about dragging you all into this. I promise I’ll make it up to you somehow."
Hearing Gwen’s promise, Lake felt like the night had suddenly become worth it.
The promise from the Princess of the Silverveil family was worth its weight in gold.
However, it seemed like the rest of the group had something else in mind...
"You promised you’ll make it up to us...?" Hana asked as a flash appeared in her eyes.
"Yes, I should at least do this much."
"Then... I want dessert!"
"I want food!"
"I want alcohol!"
"...."
Both Gwen and Lake were silent with a shocked look on our faces.
Even with the ability to read fate, Lake didn’t think he would have seen that coming.
His ability to see into the future functioned like a 24 hour recording that he could zoom through. He usually skipped the unimportant parts so he really didn’t expect them to answer like that.
After the initial shock, Gwen seemed to have recovered as she hurriedly replied.
"W-Wait a minute, we can discuss this! There must be something else you want right?"
"Food is great and all, but they’re a bit pricey, even for me, so you can rethink your decision, maybe I could get you it later, like, next year later, when we graduate!"
Gwen spoke so fast that her sentences merged together, saying some things that really would make one feel pitiful if they didn’t know the truth about the academy.
"No, no, no, your Highness, that just won’t do."
"That’s right, it has to be today."
"Don’t pretend like we don’t know about the extra points you had saved up from last year."
"N-No, that’s, wait a minute..."
Gwen looked slightly pale.
"Come on, Your Highness, you wouldn’t go back on your promise now, would you?"
Landur spoke with a condescending smile, putting special emphasis on the words "Your Highness".
It seems like he wanted to use her family’s reputation to his advantage to force her out.
Gwen probably felt terrible right now.
If it was anything else, she probably could have gotten it using her family’s resources.
But at the academy, aside from research materials and a few personal items, the academy didn’t usually allow people to bring in outside items.
The latest training equipment was fully provided at the academy, there were several facilities along with a wide array of lectures that students could attend at their will. Money wasn’t a factor as everything worked with the academy’s point system so even a poor student could potentially have a better standard of living inside the academy compared to a rich one.
Of course, that was if they were ok with staying back a year.
"F-Fine... but I will be the one who chooses the type you get!"
Eventually, Gwen caved in under the pressure from Hana and Landur. Although Jayce said a few things that contributed to the final outcome, it couldn’t be compared to the other two who seemed to be enjoying pressuring Gwen more than the idea of getting their reward.
"W-What about you, Lake..."
Gwen asked weakly with a sad smile on her face.
Looking at her ghostly pale face, Lake felt that if he were to also ask her for food, she might collapse to the ground, which was astonishing in its own right.
"Hmm... I can’t think of anything right now... I guess I’ll keep my favor on hold. I’ll ask some other time when I think of one."
"Bah! That’s so boring, Junior! You should have applied more pressure onto her. I felt we were close to seeing her cry! How rare of a sight would that be?"
"Mhm, That’s right. it’s so rare that I can’t possibly imagine it!"
Hearing Hana’s and Landur’s comments, Lake only smiled slightly.
Gwen who was beside him silently looked over to the two.
Lake didn’t know what she was thinking, but he knew it couldn’t be anything good for Hana and Landur.
’I wish you the best, seniors. May your punishment be swift and painless.’
Lake said a small prayer in his mind as he looked at the rowdy couple in front of him.
With a light sigh, Gwen seemed to have accepted her fate as she spoke, "Alright, that’s enough. Everyone is still probably exhausted from last night, so let’s just receive our points and go rest."
Everyone nodded at her suggestion. They were indeed tired and Lake would also like to return to his dorm.
He still had a lot of stuff to sort through from last night.
They all headed to the academy’s central office where matters related to outside the academy were dealt with.
After handing in their report to the management team there, their work was verified before the points were assigned to them.
Although Lake was only participating in these hunts as a result of a deal he made with the Principal, he still also received points for the work he put in.
Everyone received five hundred points, which was a tenth of what Lake needed to move up a grade at the end of the year.
However, for everyone else, Lake could see that they weren’t particularly excited by the points. Remembering how much points they needed to graduate, Lake felt slight pity towards them.
After receiving his points, Lake successfully returned to his room where he collapsed on the bed.
Although his strength had greatly improved after last night, he still felt both mentally and physically exhausted from all the work he had to do both behind the scenes and in front of everyone else.
Activating the Mana Heart to speed up his recovery, Lake fell asleep on his bed.
....
Scribble!
Rustle!
In one of the private research rooms belonging to the academy’s Instructors, the Mana Theory Instructor of the Sacred Class was currently jolting down several notes on a piece of paper.
"Concentration of ethereal flux... parallels in kinetic equilibrium..."
"Potential resonance with... vibrational frequency... coherent patterns?"
"Structured resonance... foundational fabric... energy entanglement?"
"Observable transference... inherent elemental lattice... dynamic equilibrium."
"But... absence of intermediary conduit... yet effects consistent?"
As he mumbled under his breath, he frowned deeply as he pondered the problem in front of him.
While he was confused, he opened up another file on his holographic screen.
The file had the title, "Principle of Flow Paths".
It was the file Lake had given to the Principal when he was negotiating for the support of the academy with his training program.
As he flipped through it, he found a certain line that seemed to clear up some of his confusion.
"Harmonized integration... coherent vibrational cycles... profound unity!"
Looking back at the problem, he seemed to have discovered something that made him thoroughly excited.
"Haha! After close to a decade of research, I finally solved this damn equation!"
His eyes were shining as he looked at the research paper he was writing on just now.
Turning his eyes back to the holographic screen, he sighed.
"I still can’t believe something like this was written by a student..."
"It seems that I am getting old. At this rate, the younger generation will surpass me before the end of the year, ha!"
He released a light chuckle as he placed back his paper on the desk.
"Lake Egoven... It seems that you and I need to have a proper conversation..."
