Chapter 126: Quelling The Chaos
Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Quelling The Chaos
Lake arrived outside the hotel he and his group were staying at.
It was already past midnight by the time he got Elisabeth and the rest settled into a temporary abode.
Click.
Lake walked in as he opened the door to his room.
Immediately after, he could hear the hurried footsteps of a few people rushing towards him.
"Where have you been?! We tried contacting you through your wristwatch but you weren’t picking up!"
"Junior, don’t you know it’s important to return home early or else you’ll make your family worried?"
Hana and Landur were the first people to speak. They both had a slightly annoyed expression on their face.
Lake’s mouth twitched slightly when he heard Landur’s words about family.
"What are you? My parents?"
"Ah! Honey, can you believe this? It seems our son has entered his rebellious phase. How dare he talk back to us!"
"I didn’t wish to see it come to this, but it seems our son has become a rebel. As the father, I need to take responsibility and bring my son back to the righteous way!"
Listening to the two of them ramble off, Lake was speechless.
Knowing that they were only joking about, he rolled his eyes as he nodded to Gwen and Jayce who were standing behind them.
"Are you okay?" Gwen only asked one question to which Lake smiled.
"I’m fine. I was just walking around the city and lost track of time."
Gwen nodded in response.
"We need to talk." She said as she turned around and returned to the living room.
Hana and Landur also seemed to have calmed down and followed behind her.
Lake also walked up, passing by Jayce.
"It’s good that you’re safe, first year."
"Mhm."
Lake nodded in response as they both entered the living room.
Gwen and the rest were already sitting down on the sofa.
Lake took a seat on the sofa opposite them with Jayce.
"..."
It was silent for a moment. Lake could see that everyone was waiting for Gwen to explain first.
After organizing her thoughts for a moment, she turned to Lake.
"Are you aware of what is happening in the city?"
"Somewhat," Lake answered after a moment of contemplation, "I heard bits and pieces from people on the street while I was walking by."
"Then I’ll explain it to you so everyone is on the same page."
Raising her arm, Gwen flicked her wristwatch, opening a holographic screen.
"These are some files regarding the information that has been gathered so far on the incident."
"In just one night, seven organized attacks were launched throughout the city by the terrorist organization Prestige."
Everyone’s expressions were slightly dark but it seemed that they already knew this as they weren’t that surprised.
Lake didn’t say anything.
He had already learned that the attack on the theater wasn’t the only one.
He didn’t notice at the time, but while he was dealing with the woman, several more disturbances popped up in the Web of Fate.
After everything was dealt with, he had wanted to check if the original disturbance in the Web of Fate had returned to normal, which was how he learned of the current situation.
"Three attacks were carried out in highly populated streets, two were in entertainment facilities, one was in the city center where a small bazaar was set up, and the last one was at the transfer station which they used to make their escape."
"Since tonight was the Moon Bright Festival, the population density was far higher than normal, and the estimated amount of casualties is said to be in the thousands with the injured ranging in the tens of thousands."
Lake’s face darkened slightly at her words.
’A thousand fates...’
He was already furious at the woman for destroying the fates of more than fifty people, but now he learned that it was only a small fraction of the total.
In his head, he had already targeted Prestige as a group that must be dealt with.
"The attacks were carried out simultaneously across the city and were mostly successful on the enemy’s part. One site had managed to escape the brunt of the attack due to the interference of an unknown hunter, but the number of dead was still high."
"For now the Hunter’s Association are racking their brains to figure out the goal of these attacks but no possible theory or pattern has been found yet."
"..."
Everyone was silent.
The situation was depressing and they couldn’t mutter a word. Even Hana and Landur, who had been joking around when they met a few minutes ago, had grim expressions.
"Unfortunately, by the time the hunters found out about the attacks, Prestige had already made their escape. A few terrorists were captured in the process, but all of them managed to commit suicide before they could be fully restrained."
"That’s the summary of the report that was sent to the Hunter Association regarding the incident."
After Gwen finished explaining, no one questioned why she had access to the reports of the Hunter Association, instead, Lake asked, "Why are you telling us this?"
"Because, after the initial attack had subsided, a mass panic had occurred within the city. Both the Police department and the various guilds and Hunter Association have joined hands to quell the chaos but they are still widely understaffed."
"Although no one asked us, I felt it would be better for us to help out while we can."
As Gwen spoke, she turned her gaze to Lake, "Or more accurately, I felt that the situation would be dealt with sooner if you were to help out."
"Hm?"
"What do you mean by that?"
Lake and everyone was slightly confused at Gwen’s words.
Knowing that they would be like this, Gwen didn’t directly answer their questions but instead asked another question.
"Lake, I heard you have an awakened ability similar to a Mana Field?"
With that one question, Lake’s and everyone else’s confusion had been cleared up.
However, Lake still wanted to verify his guess.
"You mean..."
"Yes. We need you to perform mass crowd control."
...
After receiving Gwen’s order, Lake didn’t refuse to help out as it wouldn’t be much effort on his part.
With King’s Aura’s reverence effect, it was better at suppressing rowdier crowds than a Martial Master’s Mana Field that relied mostly on force.
Everyone else had already split up and went to assist in areas where manpower was lacking.
Gwen had stayed behind for a bit to inform the Hunter’s Association and local Police department about Lake’s presence and to not be alarmed.
After receiving the message from Gwen saying that she had gotten permission and he could begin, Lake turned to look at the rowdy crowd in front of him.
Several fierce arguments between people were ongoing, some were crying and others were shouting.
The scene was incredibly noisy with a few hundred people gathered in the streets and buildings.
Some were running by and knocking into other people, resulting in more arguments occurring.
Lake saw one person running before knocking over a small child who was trying to escape the packed crowd.
With his enhanced hearing, he could differentiate between all the sounds and knew that the child was looking for her parents in the crowd.
The child’s crying rang loudly in his ears after being knocked to the ground.
Suddenly a car alarm went off in the packed streets causing Lake to frown.
The chaos and loud noise would give most people a headache, not to mention Lake whose senses had been enhanced beyond human limits.
Unable to take it anymore, Lake climbed on top of a car as he released his King’s Aura.
Fwoosh!
As his King’s Aura enveloped the streets and the surrounding buildings, most of the noise slowly died out until only the sound of the car alarm was heard.
Looking at everyone’s lowered heads, Lake stood tall atop the car, his presence infinitely magnified in the quiet crowd.
"The owner of the car, turn off the alarm."
Lake gave a command as a man in the crowd slowly raised his head as he shakingly placed his hand in his pocket.
After taking out a key and pressing a button, the annoying car alarm stopped.
"All children separated from their parents, gather at my side."
After Lake’s initial order, he asked for the lost children to step forward.
Eventually, three little kids made their way forward. Lake noticed that the kid that had been knocked over wasn’t there.
Looking over to where she had fallen, Lake saw that she was still on the ground, unable to get up.
She seemed to have injured her ankle when she fell and was unable to get up.
"..."
Lake silently got off the car before walking towards the child. The crowd subconsciously parted ways to allow him to move forward.
Kneeling down, he extended his hand as a warm light enveloped her injured ankle, healing it miraculously.
Throughout the process the little girl was unable to say a word, still suppressed by his King’s Aura.
However, after her ankle healed, she raised her head slightly as she looked at Lake.
King’s Aura suppressed the masses and the enemy, however, it also boosted his allies and people.
"T-Thank you."
The little girl spoke with a weak voice.
"It’s alright. Can you walk?"
"Y-Yesh."
The little girl stuttered a bit but still got up with her head slightly lowered.
Lake led the little girl back to the rest of the children before scanning with his Sixth Sense.
After confirming there were no other lost children, he called for their parents to come forward and take them back.
Using his King’s Aura to his advantage, he bent the crowd to his will and easily suppressed the chaos with just a few orders.
When the police department arrived, the scene was already exceptionally calm with everyone moving around in an orderly manner.
With dumbfounded expressions, the officers wondered what had happened as Lake made his way to the next site.
