Chapter 113: Disruption of Fate
Chapter 113: Chapter 113: Disruption of Fate
Lake walked through the city, going from street to street as he looked at the variety of events and stalls set up all throughout the city.
For an event that lasted for only a night, Lake thought that the city really put all their effort into it.
"Hm? What the...?"
As Lake walked through the city observing the fates of those he passed by, he spotted something that left him stunned.
A young man was walking through the street holding hands with a woman. The man was fairly ordinary and one wouldn’t think much after seeing him once.
He looked a little stronger than others and had a happy smile on his face as he walked through the streets with the young woman.
All things considered, he looked like a healthy young man who was on a date with his girlfriend. However, Lake could see an extra strand of fate above the man’s head.
That strand was ever so slightly green with a halo surrounding it, however, the color of the halo told a completely different story from what the healthy appearance of the young man may lead one to believe.
Black.
Although Lake had never seen a halo of that color before, he instantly knew what the ominous color represented. That man was going to die in the next twenty four hours.
However, this wasn’t what left Lake confused. He cared little for whether that person lived or died as that was his fate.
No, what left him truly stunned was the fact that despite reading through that person’s entire fate, he couldn’t see how he died!
As Lake was beginning to doubt his own judgment, he saw another scene that left him doubting his own eye sights almost immediately after.
The black halo that was hovering above the man’s head suddenly flickers before turning back to a light pink halo.
"..."
Lake stood there in a daze.
He blinked a few times before looking closely at the young man’s fate again.
There were no changes. The color of the halo stayed as light pink which represented a romantic encounter.
"I must have observed too many fates in one go. Now I’m seeing things." Lake thought to himself as he rubbed his temples.
After sighing, he prepared to move on and walk to another street.
"!"
As Lake looked up however, he was instantly startled.
Above the young man’s head, the pink halo had returned to black.
Lake didn’t know why the man’s fate was changing so much, however that wasn’t what left Lake startled.
Looking around, Lake did a quick count before coming to a shocking conclusion.
"Twenty two..."
Above the head of twenty one other people, was the same ominous black halo.
Lake’s expression turned grim as he carefully looked through all of their fates.
Just like the young man, he couldn’t see how they died making him even more terrified.
These people were supposed to die today but no matter how much Lake looked, he couldn’t see what was the cause of their death. All of their futures showed that they would live for at least the next twenty four hours!
If that was the case, why were they all marked to die? Lake couldn’t answer this question and that left him scared.
He had upgraded the Observer of Fate skill so he wouldn’t be clueless in the future, yet when he looked at these people, he found his head full of question marks.
Lake took a deep breath before calming himself. He was momentarily startled as his ability didn’t seem to be working, however, he quickly got rid of this thought.
His ability had already touched on the natural laws of the world, meaning if it wasn’t working, it was because something had happened or was messing with the laws itself.
At this thought, he began to look at everyone’s fate from another angle, looking at their connection to the Web of Fate and sure enough, he spotted a common link between all twenty two people.
"Found you." Lake silently muttered as he took a closer look.
All twenty two of the victims had a common point that would link them to one another in the near future.
Around an hour from now, they would gather inside a theater to watch a play put on by a group of martial artists.
When Lake tried to watch the play from the perspective of the Web of Fate, something strange happened.
As if the area of space that connected these peoples’ fate had been distorted, Lake couldn’t see anything that pertained to their future.
All he could see was a mess of different outcomes that made no sense. Sometimes he saw the future where they walked out of the theater in two hours, other times he saw flashes of blood and gore covering the entire stadium.
Seeing this caused Lake to deeply frown.
"Why did this have to happen as soon as I upgraded the skill..." Lake thought as he felt his headache that had finally disappeared return again.
However, despite feeling that the situation was extremely strange, Lake knew that it was most likely a coincidence.
This was because he knew that whether he upgraded the skill or not, this incident was most likely going to happen either way.
As Lake was thinking of what to make of the situation however, he suddenly got a notification from the system.
[Anomaly Detected.]
[System has detected that the host has discovered an anomaly in the Web of Fate.]
[Generating quest...]
[Quest: Disruption of Fate]
[Quest description: It seems that something is messing with Fate. As the Master of Fate, you cannot allow such transgressions to go unnoticed!]
[Quest goal: Find out the cause of the disruption in the Web of Fate.]
[Quest Reward: 1000 RP, Increase Mana Strength and Mana Capacity by 1.00 point.]
Two different notifications were sent out at the same time.
One notification was the usual Anomaly Detected one that showed up whenever a rift appeared on the system map, and the other was the generation of a new quest.
Lake first looked at the location of the new rift on the map before seeing that it had appeared at the location of the theater.
"This better be one hell of a coincidence..." Lake’s eyes twitched upon seeing this.
After reading through the quest, Lake was pleasantly surprised when he saw the reward.
Although he only got 1000 RP separately, if he were to combine the worth of the one point increase in the two stats, the actual worth of the reward was 3000 RP!
Not to mention that the increased stats were Mana Strength and Capacity! For the current Lake, the increase in these two stats were the one that gave him the most benefits as besides increasing his combat strength, it also helped him in the completion of his other quest.
When Lake thought of this, he couldn’t help but feel tempted.
The quest this time seemed to be quite a dangerous one. Besides the anomaly in the Web of Fate, just the appearance of the rift was enough to make Lake feel like giving up.
Although the rift seemed to have just appeared, just the fact that it appeared at the location where the disruption in the Web of Fate was occurring was enough to leave him on high alert.
However, the more Lake thought about it, the more he felt that this quest was actually possible.
After all, the quest only required him to find out what was the cause of the disruption. It didn’t mention anything about dealing with the rift or saving the lives of the citizens.
He could just sneak in using his Stealth Skill to find out the cause and sneak out before anyone, or anything, noticed that he was there.
However, the more Lake thought of the current situation, the more he felt that he should still be cautious.
Jumping back into the Web of Fate, Lake looked for a particular target before finding exactly what he was looking for.
After confirming one more time, he opened his wristband interface before sending a message.
After waiting for a bit and receiving a reply, Lake left the street he was in before walking into an alley.
Opening his system space, he took out a black coat and battle suit he hadn’t worn in a long time.
His previous suit, given to him by the academy, was ruined in the fight against the Lizard King, so he had to take out the spare one he kept in his inventory.
Putting it on, he returned to his old attire when he led the Spider Army into battle as The King.
The black coat covered his body as he wore a black mask to cover his face. With his hood up, no one could see his face making him look both mysterious and terrifying.
Not to mention the nauseating scent of blood emanating from the coat.
Although he had washed it multiple times and got rid of all the blood stains, the coat still strangely clung to the smell of the blood.
Taking a deep breath, Lake felt the rancid smell assault his nostrils yet he didn’t seem to care. Although he didn’t particularly like the smell of blood, he had long grown accustomed to it and found a strange sense of clarity in the scent.
It reminded him of the battlefield and kept him calm and cool headed at all times.
Just like that, his presence slowly faded as his figure quickly disappeared into the moon lit city like a ghost.
Tonight was bound to be a bloody one.
