Chapter 112: Personality

Chapter 112: Chapter 112: Personality

After they decided on their plans for the festival, everyone returned to the hotel room.

Since most of the stalls were still in the preparation phase and the festival hadn’t officially started yet, there was no point in walking around now.

Lake took this chance to do some research on new spells and modification of old ones with the inspiration he got from Gwen’s spell scroll.

The other four kept busy doing their own things until the start of the festival.

Around five in the evening Jayce left the hotel to go meet up with his old acquaintances.

Gwen said she would find a place to meditate and absorb some of the moonlight. When Lake heard this, he wanted to stay back and watch her practice as he was quite curious about her Circulation Technique. Maybe it would have given him a clue to the origins of the silver veil over her fate.

However, in the end, Lake decided it wasn’t worth it. Since he couldn’t read her fate, at most all he could find was her flow path which he had already seen clearly while hunting with her.

Eventually, night started to descend and Landur and Hana eventually left the hotel room.

It was only then did Lake stop his research and walk out onto the balcony.

The sun was over the horizon and he could already see the moon rising into the sky.

Above the city, he could see a storm of twisting mana that had formed causing the clouds to disperse.

As the moon rose into the sky, Lake could see the first ray of moonlight pass through the mana storm as a silvery light cascaded down onto the city.

As time went on, the silver light spread further and further, covering the entire city as the area that was starting to get dark, turned into a bright, silver wonderland.

The dense mana floated in the air mixing and blending with the moonlight causing countless small phenomena to flare up in the air, looking like small snowflakes that floated through the air.

With a single touch, these snowflakes would dissipate, causing a soft glow to spread out.

Watching the city down below, Lake could see many people waving their hands at the floating snowflakes, causing the city to light up in a festive atmosphere.

Screak!

Boom!

Crackle!

Fireworks were sent up into the sky, officially announcing the start of the festival.

....

Lake put on a hoodie and walked out of the hotel.

The moment he stepped into the moon lit world, Lake felt a cooling sensation spread through his body.

It felt like a soft current was flowing through him causing him to subconsciously loosen up his body.

"The mana from the mana storm mixed with the moonlight caused it to fall to the ground, enveloping the city in rich moonlight infused mana. Although not as potent as Kate’s Astral Mana, it is still quite comfortable to walk around in."

Feeling the comfortable energy, Lake thought for a moment before activating his Mana Heart, causing all the moonlight mana to flow towards him like a storm.

Whoosh!

The mana rushed towards Lake’s body, enveloping him in an almost ethereal glow.

If Lake were to walk around the city like this it would be far too high profile for his liking so he lowered the strength of the mana gathering formation until the light surrounding him looked nothing more than a slight glow.

The light that surrounded him was now very faint and, if one didn’t look carefully, they may not notice it in the moon lit city.

Activating stealth, he began to walk through the crowds.

There were many people walking around the streets now that the festival had begun. Lake could see several friend groups and couples lining the streets as they interacted with the various stalls.

Each one had their own story to tell and as Lake walked through the crowd, he silently observed them all.

Some were heartwarming, some were exciting, some were boring and there were a few that were quite cruel.

In life many things could happen and not one human could experience everything life had to offer. Ever since he had acquired the Master of Fate role and started observing the fates of those around him, Lake had seen many things that no one person was ever supposed to know.

He saw the moment of someone’s birth to how they aged and grew up as well as all the secrets and stories they had accumulated through their lifetime.

If a normal person were to experience and see all the things Lake had seen, they could have easily become emotionally unstable, over sympathetic, or even apathetic to everything around them.

After all, the more you’re exposed to something, the less interesting it becomes until you eventually just stop caring about it all together.

In Lake’s case, he had already become apathetic to the fates of those around him. He treated the lives of everyone like movies or books, just reading through them when he felt like it.

At first he had thought this was due to his own uncaring personality but later he had figured out that it was actually the protection from his role.

The Master of Fate was a person who existed outside of fate. He should take little interest in the lives of any one individual yet keeps on watching with great interest. He cared neither of good nor bad, just what entertains him. He changes fate not out of pity or hatred, but out of the pure desire to create an interesting story.

This was who the Master of Fate was, or at least Lake’s own interpretation of it after getting accustomed to it.

When Lake first got the role, he didn’t know but his mindset had already been changed to resemble that thought process. It was because of this that Lake could continue to read countless fates yet never get bored or tired and it was also because of this that he never once felt emotional from a person’s history no matter how dramatic it may be.

This however wasn’t the only change to his personality however. There was also the Master Assassin role and Mage role that had brought about its own subtle change to Lake’s personality.

In the case of the Master Assassin, he became cold and uncaring to the concept of death. The goal of the Assassin was always to kill the target before leaving without a trace, however, in the case of the Master Assassin, Lake found that there was more meaning to the art of assassination.

It was never to kill before leaving, but to achieve something without anyone knowing. His concept of kill or not to kill was defined by the greater goal he was achieving by doing it.

To assassinate isn’t to kill, but to bring about change and in Lake’s case, it was always to bring about a change within himself. To acquire more RP to become stronger, to become something more than the emotionless husk he was now, to become human.

Finally, there was the Mage role.

This was the role that was the most unfamiliar to Lake as the concept of a Mage didn’t really exist in his world outside of fiction. Although Martial Artists can be said to accomplish magical things with their formidable power, it wasn’t exactly the same for a mage.

Where Martial Artists pursue power through the evolution of the body, a Mage pursues truth through research and the acquisition of knowledge. Only by understanding the principles of the world and bending it to one’s will can a mage truly find the truth they so desperately pursue.

As for what that truth was, it was different for each mage. Some would seek the truth to eternal life, others would seek the truth to revive the dead, but in Lake’s case, the truth he sought has always been himself.

He seeks to understand who he is. Why doesn’t he feel the same emotions as every other human? Why could he surpass the limits of man with just his physical body?

He seeks to understand his background. Who were his parents? Why do Kate’s parents want to stop her from finding the truth behind him?

Finally, he sought to understand the system. What was it? Why does it help him? What was the purpose of the quests?

All of these were truths that Lake was seeking out, and the desire that makes him a Mage.

In the end, his roles combine and merge creating a personality that is different yet unique to who he is. In the future, when he acquires more roles, he wasn’t sure how it would change him.

Maybe he would acquire two roles that clashed against each other, causing his mind to become twisted.

Maybe he would gain so many roles that his personality would just split into countless personas just to maintain his sanity.

Or maybe none of that would happen and he would continue to silently move forward, trying to understand the one thing he couldn’t research.

Emotions.
