Chapter 959: 326. Ambush and Rescue - Additional update for "starsfalling" [2/15]
Under the evening twilight, a massive transport convoy was traveling along the road that stretched east from the Pioneer Fortress.
The scale of the convoy far exceeded that of a standard merchant group, with over twenty large wagons designed for heavy transport, and an entire production line for firearms being disassembled and moved like ants transferring their home.
This was only a small part of a production line the Cape Family had obtained from Westerburg, the capital of the Posya Confederation. Although Westerburg’s industrial capabilities could not match that of the "Bourbon Industrial Belt" within the Golden Flower Kingdom, it was considered top-notch by the standards of Transylvania.
Unfortunately, those glorious days had faded with time.
This set of production lines was meant as a display of "sincerity," a gift to be sent into the lands of Governor Murphy. The timing was meticulously planned to not send all the production lines before the construction of the factory was complete, as that would be a grave waste.
After all, as qualified capitalists, these production lines could make a lot of money for the Cape Family’s commercial association every single day.
This was just the first transport.
If the initial cooperation with Governor Murphy proved to be pleasant, the subsequent production lines would be sent to their appropriate destinations even faster.
The official plans for the steam train tracks promoted by the Golden Flower Kingdom were making orderly progress toward the East Prussia Region. The Cape Family, along with several other major nobles, was providing financial support for the project. Once the railroad reached the Pioneer Fortress, this land would forever belong to King Louis.
Just as the Transia People could not comprehend how the Beilao conquered the Great Wilderness against almost impossible odds, the Beilao could not grasp how the Golden Flower Kingdom rapidly assimilated new-found strength and transformed it into a power that could be utilized at an intimidating speed.
The continuously laid tracks were like more robust veins woven by the Kingdom for itself, the factories along the railway were the spine of its body, and the continuously advancing steam trains represented the new era that was roaring into existence.
The Golden Flower had boarded the train, but unfortunately, Nordtof missed this ride, and the Posya Confederation fared even worse—they didn’t even qualify to board.
"We’re approaching the border between East Prussia and Transylvania, Miss," said a female Knight dressed in light armor, riding a battle steed dressed in splendid armor to the large wagon at the front of the convoy, reporting to a carriage shrouded by curtains:
"The leader of the Firefox Mercenaries asked me to inform you that the road entering Transylvania ahead might not be so peaceful. That old mercenary who has traveled far and wide once lived in Transylvania for a few years. He says this land is filled with detestable Wolf People bandits and unreasonable Vampire Blood Servants.
We might encounter threats, so he wishes to take over the security of the merchant convoy."
"Oh?"
An absent-minded voice came from inside the carriage, Miss Biqi, the wealthy heiress of the Shivel Family and fiancée of Major Fraser, asked in confusion:
"Why would he have such presumptuous thoughts? The Firefox Mercenaries are just the ’black gloves’ that the Cape Family has nurtured in East Prussia, aren’t they? By what right does he think that I would entrust the entire security of the merchant convoy to him?
Is that libertine mercenary captain taking me for someone who knows nothing?
The value of this entire production line is much too precious compared to his ragtag mercenary corps.
Reply to him for me, tell him to do what he’s supposed to do!
Fraser entrusted this matter to me because he trusts me, how could I let my good brother down?"
"Uh, Miss, that’s your fiancé, not your brother," the Shivel Family’s female Knight serving as a guard said while rubbing her neck with an extreme sense of helplessness, speaking softly:
"The head of our household is very pleased with the progress of your marriage arrangement with young master Fraser; he even gave up plans to annex the Beverley Family’s territory to leave a good impression on his future son-in-law. If he found out that you refer to your fiancé as a brother, I fear that our family head’s heart condition would act up on the spot."
"Hehe, he wouldn’t, my father is the shrewdest of businessmen," said Miss Biqi, seemingly taking it in stride.
She joked with her long-time playmate and guard:
"Do you believe that not only would my father not be angry if he knew the truth, he would actually be even more delighted? For him, as long as he can have a closer relationship with the Cape Family and reap benefits from it, that’s enough.
The means by which this is achieved are diverse.
Whether it’s packaging one’s long-unmarried daughter off to the bed of the Cape Family’s heir, or turning one’s temperamental daughter into the best and closest friend of that sole heir, both are viable strategies.
So I’m not worried at all about this ’little secret’ being exposed. Hmm, that was analyzed by Fraser before we departed, and I think his analysis is spot on.
What do you think? LiWen."
"I still think you and Major Fraser are a match made by heaven, the perfect combination of beauty, strength, and wisdom. Your children are destined to become the pride of heaven in the Golden Flower Kingdom," said the female Knight named "LiWen" as she shrugged her shoulders, glanced at the starless evening sky, and looked ahead at the wilderness leading to Transylvania. After a few seconds, she tilted her head as if listening to a sound that seemingly only she could hear, then gripped the hilt of her sword at her waist, whispering:
"I have a bad feeling, Miss. Perhaps you should put on your armor now."
