Chapter 923: 314. Call from the Swamp
The student party was suddenly ambushed during their "revisit of an old haunt."
Someone had set up a disguised Spiritual Energy Barrier here, which made the exterior look like an ordinary jungle scene without any flaws, but this could not fool the veteran players who had fought here before.
Cheche was the first to notice that the terrain was amiss. Soon everyone scattered to look for clues and, as expected, they stumbled into the camouflaged barrier.
As a result, they were faced with an ambush by a rather elite Skeleton Army.
Unlike the decaying bone skeletons wandering in the Smugglers’ Forest, armed with bone spears and wooden shields, ones that could be easily fooled, the skeletons here were clad in armor, neatly arranged in formation. The weapons they used were also decaying, but the malevolent spirit light adorning them carried particularly nasty death filth that would infect anyone jabbed with plague toxins.
These creatures belonged to the Undead too, but they were quite different from ghouls.
The body of a ghoul would retreat and defend when attacked, but the Skeleton Soldiers, unimpeded by flesh and blood, would continue to attack even if their bodies were smashed, using their scattered limbs, and even if only a head remained, it could bite at the living with its teeth.
Their only weakness was that the lack of flesh and tendons made the skeletons’ movements slow and their individual combat strength was not as wild as that of ghouls.
But this particular elite Skeleton Army had compensated for their weakness with their tidy formation.
In the front, skeletons with shields protected the archers behind them, while on the flanks, skeleton cavalry crisscrossed back and forth, and a few skeleton mages commanded from the center, intermittently casting wide-range Slow Skill and Stinking Cloud and War Fog to disrupt the players’ vision and movement.
These guys would even throw bone javelins for covering strikes.
They did not act like brainless monsters but rather like a well-trained army. Within minutes of engaging, they completed the encirclement of the student party.
The damned skeleton mages even summoned a large number of Crows fluttering about, blocking the airspace and forcing the Vampire Players to land again once they took to the sky.
"Did we just poke a hornet’s nest of the Undead Scourge? What the hell is all this? Can Transylvania get any more sinister? First ghouls, then Skeleton Soldiers! What’s next, a Lich or Death Knight?"
Khaki Tontita, who was surrounded in the woodland, cursed as he got up, trying to return fire with his hunting gun while protecting his body with a shield. But as soon as he showed his head, several bone arrows shot at the shield, clinking against it and making him duck back down.
He swore.
Several companions beside him also looked helpless.
Their "revisit of an old haunt" was truly aimless, purely out of curiosity to see the places they had fought before, but who knew they would encounter an ambush of this level here?
"There are at least two hundred Skeleton Soldiers! And all elites."
Bull Bull leaned on his Wolf People Legion shield and looked at the corroded iron spear he had just snatched, eyeing the Pioneer Corps Emblem on it and whispered, "Confirmed, these skeletons must be the Golden Flower veterans who died at the hands of Missy that night. It’s really bizarre, have they just been guarding this place without moving?"
"The timing is off!"
Next to him, Dump Truck was loading bullets into his hunting gun, frowning as he said, "It’s only been a little over a month since our battle in the Smugglers’ Forest. The woodland isn’t a closed environment, and with proper temperature and humidity, how could these soldiers’ bodies decay so fast?
Look at them, they’re all reduced to white bones, not a piece of flesh on them, and even their armor and weapons have been enchanted with a Weakness effect. This is clearly the work of someone else ’processing’ them, right? If they were naturally awakened undead, they should have become ghouls! Like what happened in the city sewers, that’s the normal situation!"
"This proves that Bloodclaw Clan and Jackal and Wolf Hog was a plot laid by the development team to lead us back to the Smugglers’ Forest and discover the changes here, thereby leading to subsequent events."
The "Vampire Ranger" Ayu, limping along with two swords, came over, eyes shining, and said, "I just took a risk by scouting from the air. Although I was nearly taken down by the vicious crow flock, before I fell, I still saw a small encampment guarded by skeleton soldiers with a fire lit!
This means there must be somebody there! Maybe that scoundrel is behind this random event. Damn it, they made us look so miserable; we have to catch that bastard and kill him! Besides, perhaps we’ve stumbled upon a very impressive random event by mistake."
"Whoosh!"
While they were discussing, a gust of wind blew through the forest, and the massive Celestial Scorpion Lion descended from the sky, flapping its wings to blow away the poisonous fog nearby.
It caught an unprepared Skeleton Cavalry with its talons like eagle claws, lifted it into the sky, and then with the posture of an eagle tossing a sheep, slammed it harshly to the ground. The horseless Skeleton Horse then collapsed on the spot with a mournful cry.
With the aid of the Scorpion Lion, the trapped student party immediately launched a counter-attack, driving away the incoming skeleton soldiers once more, and then saw the Celestial Scorpion Lion carrying Little Brother Fu and Life is pretty good flapping its wings and landing behind the student party’s defensive position.
Touching Your Poverty, carrying a hunting gun, jumped down, like a swiftly moving soldier, pulling his good buddy over to join them.
