Milian snorted, turned away, and took a sip of tea from her thermos. She said:
"Don’t underestimate me."
"Alright."
Murphy replied:
"Seeing you so confident puts me at ease. However, before I leave, there’s one matter that needs handling. You can come along."
"Hmm?"
Milian looked at Murphy with surprise, but he offered no explanation.
It wasn’t until the carriage stopped at the newly renovated entrance of the Crimson Corridor that the two disembarked. Murphy glanced back at the construction zone that had just been leveled. In a few days, Old Chen’s planned Midnight Tower would begin construction here as a new symbol of the Crimson Castle.
Once complete, the tower would rise directly above the Crimson Corridor and integrate with the space below, becoming the new stronghold of the Blood Vulture Clan.
"Follow me."
Murphy gestured, and Milian followed him down to the lowest level of the Blood Vulture Corridor, near the Dead’s Cabin. The Governor finally laid eyes on tonight’s "guest."
A skeleton.
To be precise, a skeleton housing the soul of a Necromancer.
Necromancers, as high-ranking undead, often choose fresh corpses as vessels during revival when their original body is destroyed, ensuring a certain degree of self-defense after reincarnation. However, if needed, decayed bones could also be used—after all, a Necromancer’s essence relies on its phylactery rather than its physical form.
For Murphy to bring the Governor to meet this newly revived skeleton in such an elaborate fashion was enough to prove how "special" its identity was.
Necromancer Bella and his wife Bernice were nowhere to be found, likely wandering about. Pantsless Demon Afeng, having been strengthened by techniques from the Ghost Mystic Manual, was now free to move and chose to accompany his mother rather than stay in the Dead’s Cabin.
Currently, within the Dead’s Cabin and the designated "Undead Zone" around it, only a batch of silent undead remained.
These beings were spirits revived by the Wolf People from the swamps. They had nowhere to go and were strikingly silent. Since arriving at the Crimson Corridor, they had caused no disturbances and barely made their presence known, carrying an almost nonexistent sense of existence.
"Allow me to introduce you, my Governor."
Murphy pulled out a chair and sat in front of the silent skeletal frame. He stared at the flickering blue flame in its eye sockets and told Milian:
"This guest’s name is Rotem Xiu Baldwin."
"?!"
The Crimson Regent’s eyes widened instantly. She exclaimed:
"So... it’s really General Baldwin, the Winter Wolf Army Commander’s..."
"Great-grandfather!"
Murphy explained in a measured tone:
"Lord Rotem was the commander who led Boris’s vanguard into the swamps during the Second Black Disaster. At that time, the Winter Wolf Army had yet to be formally established and was merely a combat battalion under Boris’s vanguard forces.
In that sense, Lord Rotem could be considered the first Winter Wolf General.
After him, that position was exclusively awarded to leaders of the Baldwin family.
Beyond the fact that the Baldwin family has consistently produced outstanding talent, their unwavering loyalty to the King also played a significant role. Their devotion was so pure that when the Wolf Queen’s father overthrew the usurping Luirik Dynasty and restored the legitimacy of the Romanov Dynasty, there was no purge of the Baldwin family.
However, I’ve heard Lady Shani mention there were some other less-discussed factors involved..."
The Governor and Regent shifted their gaze to the skeleton before them in unison. Rotem Xiu Baldwin, as if aligning with their expectations, raised his head.
The skeletal face showed no expression, but the flicker in its eye sockets revealed that the Necromancer was contemplating whether to answer Murphy’s question.
According to Bella’s private remarks, despite the hierarchy enforced by the Wolf People where Necromancers and Netherworld Knights were viewed as mere slaves of the savages, Baldwin held substantial prestige among them.
Now that the Wolf People had been eradicated, and the undead remained unsettled, Lord Baldwin naturally ascended as the leader of this group of Necromancers.
Even Bella acknowledged this.
When Bella had first been revived, he had received covert assistance from Lord Baldwin. Without it, his fiery Gladiator temperament would have made surviving three humiliating years under the Wolf People nearly impossible.
Murphy had brought Milian to meet Baldwin tonight mainly to resolve the issue of these undead’s allegiance.
The first Winter Wolf General evidently understood this, as he did not immediately speak. Instead, he remained silent for close to thirty seconds before moving his skull and replying with the raspy and shadowy tone unique to the undead:
"The reason the Wolf Queen Majesty’s father did not purge my descendants is far less complex than you might think. My wife was Hero King Boris’s sister, making my descendants members of the Normanov royal lineage.
Although merely a peripheral branch, during the long years after my death, my descendants were fortunate enough to evade the Luirik Dynasty’s retaliatory purges after their regime change. Though I’m not certain how they managed this, I suspect that had the Baldwin family not provided discreet shelter, the Wolf Queen’s father would have been incapable of restoring order centuries later.
This was nothing more than mutual political protection, exchanges, and ancient bloodline ties. Governor Murphy, and to the rather impolite young girl with auburn hair who keeps staring at me—"
