Chapter 1538: 517. As the old saying goes, this is called ’alcohol emboldens the cowardly’_2
But he still patiently explained:
"No matter the country or era, there are always plenty of people who are forced to leave their homes for various reasons. In agricultural kingdoms, this situation is somewhat better. Large-scale migration is unlikely unless there are natural disasters. However, it’s different for the Half-body Men.
It’s not just Half-body Men who live on the Ligurian Peninsula; there are also many humans.
But the rapidly industrializing process of the Half-body Men requires more and more land and resources to build factories and put into production. Without a strong political entity to protect them, the local humans have been at a disadvantage under such pressure in the recent past.
The factory owners of the Half-body Men are brutish, and many of them chasing profits don’t care what becomes of the humans whose lands they take. Of course, every election, the Steam Lords always promise to address the growing problem of migrants.
But the truth is, the jobs their factories can offer are always limited.
Many migrants who have no work can only survive on the relief food distributed by the Steam Council. Over time, a shantytown area has been established outside Charldo Harbor. When I left that city, the shantytown had grown to half the size of the city itself, almost forming a ’ring around the city’ outside its borders.
They have no jobs, they’re seldom allowed into the city, so they’ve developed a complete and rough social system in their own areas. It’s a place where violence speaks, and various incidents are endless.
Many children are born there and have barely seen the world outside the shantytowns. I’ve done investigations there, and many people wish to leave Charldo Harbor, but they simply don’t have enough savings or knowledge to do so."
Upon saying this, Professor Malcolm sighed and said:
"Honestly, compared to the slums there, Crimson Castle is now quite liveable."
"Damn! Isn’t this Charldo Harbor·2077?"
Hundred Forging Big Horse was so engrossed that he couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise, and Broken Sword Master nodded repeatedly in agreement.
However, he didn’t actually care much about these things.
Experience from other worlds has taught him that there will always be similar contradictions wherever industrialization occurs, such as sheep eating people, land enclosure movements, destruction of railways, and so on.
It’s just that the political skill and determination of the rulers will directly determine the trajectory of these issues. Now it seems that the Steam Lord Council indeed has a strong hand, but their governance is lacking somewhat, and they even have elections?
Fuck, to push through something as harsh as this in a magic world with a medieval context, no wonder Governor Milian and Colonel Fraser both acknowledge that the realm of Half-body Men is much more civilized than the human nations.
Hmm, compared to the feudalism of absolute monarchy, electoral systems can’t necessarily be said to be more civilized, as it’s hard to judge the upper limit, but the lower limit is definitely much higher.
The interesting little knowledge about Half-body Men that the Broken Sword Master Brothers learned from Professor Malcolm and Mrs. Fiona couldn’t help but give rise to the idea of visiting the cities of Half-body Men in the future, but obviously, they can’t leave right now.
After chatting with the professor’s family for a few words and presenting a finely crafted self-protection short sword as a gift to the professor’s eldest son, the two men took their leave on their own initiative.
They tactfully did not disturb the professor’s family activities for the night and on the way back, with no evidence whatsoever, were certain that Mrs. Fiona would "devour" Professor Malcolm tonight.
Tsk tsk, who would have thought that Professor Malcolm, a man in his fifties, still had such a strong back, humans in this world truly do have better physical capacities compared to the frail humans from other worlds.
The two guys walked along telling racy jokes and laughing uproariously, but soon after, they saw a "down and out person" sitting on the doorstep of the Stonemason Association’s office by the street, shriveled up under the gas lamp’s glow, looking quite wretched and miserable.
Broken Sword Master was startled; there were no streetlights in the city just yet, and one couldn’t see clearly under the gas lamps at night. At first, he thought it was a homeless NPC, but upon a closer look, he was shocked to find it was the Chosen Ashman.
Since the Stonemason Association needed various tools for building houses and roads, the blacksmith shop had quite a close connection with them. The two blacksmiths weren’t particularly close with the Dust Beater, but they were definitely acquaintances, and the fact that they were both players made it impossible for them to ignore this.
"Hey buddy, what’s wrong?"
Hundred Forging Big Horse stepped forward to ask:
"What’s going on? Why are you sitting here alone looking so miserable? Damn, I’ve never seen a player in Transylvania get themselves into such a sorry state. Come on, tell your bro, what happened?
Who bullied you?
We’ll round up the gang and go get revenge for you."
"Wuuu"
The question was fine not to ask, but once Hundred Forging Big Horse did ask, Dust Beater actually made a crying sound, which thoroughly scared the two brothers. They picked him up without a word, one on each side, and hurried to a noodle stall at the end of an alley, ordering three bowls of noodles and a bottle of liquor from the stall owner under the banner of East Mountain Residence.
"Don’t cry. Come on, have a drink. Just let us know what’s wrong and we’ll help you out. If we can’t handle it ourselves, we’ll round up the gang! We can’t let one of our own suffer like this."
