Chapter 1345: 454. Hog: You playing with the plague can’t even begin to experience my joy! - [Added Chapter 21/25]_2
"When Governor Morphy told me he had a ’civilized’ pack of Wolf People under his command, I thought he was romanticizing the facts, but it turned out he was just stating the plain truth," said Professor Malcolm as he placed the venison in his plate and lit his dwarven-style pipe. He puffed away in the evening breeze and glanced at his children playing with a group of young Wolf People under his wife’s watchful eye, then he whimsically asked:
"Don’t you think that Chieftain Hog and his tribe are just putting on an act of enthusiasm to lull you into a false sense of security, only to tie you up and roast you over a fire as a midnight snack once you fall asleep?"
"Unlikely,"
Colonel Fraser shook his head as he said:
"I’ve been in intelligence work for ten years, and even though my understanding of the Wolf People’s habits comes from books, I can tell the difference between genuine goodwill and feigned goodwill.
Chieftain Hog and his tribe clearly aren’t new to human contact, for the Wolf People guards in their dens looked at me with no particular interest and didn’t treat me like prey.
They even reminded me in a strange accent to follow their rules in human language—though there was an element of intimidation, the seasoned manner clearly indicated they’ve dealt with humans before.
And even some Gnolls grabbed me, enthusiastically trying to sell me some odd things they had dug up from underground...
Those timid rodent creatures mistook me for someone else, thinking I was no different from the humans who often visit their tribe. Perhaps they can’t distinguish between human faces, but it’s clear they’ve done this before and had some success with it."
At that point, the colonel picked up a mud-caked, rusty dagger lying near him. In a relaxed mood, he began cleaning the mud off the dagger with his finger and said:
"Like this! If I’m not mistaken, this is a combat sword used by the commanders of the Boris Vanguard in the first Black Disaster five hundred years ago. There’s a 1:1 replica in my family’s collection room.
My father loves to collect these relics.
He would definitely like this authentic artifact I inadvertently found on my journey; he certainly wouldn’t expect that I obtained it from the Gnolls for just two candles."
"If you like these, Colonel, Gold Teeth’s storeroom is filled with these strange items dug up from underground,"
Hog said nonchalantly as he sat on his stump, picking his teeth with a freshly whittled toothpick, and continued speaking to Fraser:
"The Gnolls always find things like this when they’re digging trenches nearby, but there’s even more ancient artifacts unearthed from that old battleground when the Gnolls of our tribe were asked by Governor Morphy to dig defensive lines outside the swamps.
If your father likes these relics, I can personally gift him a full set of Boris Vanguard Cavalry officer’s armor! Those are also certified as genuine by Professor Malcolm."
"Oh? That would be perfect, just in time for my father’s birthday,"
Colonel Fraser laughed heartily, but then he looked at Professor Malcolm with a peculiar gaze and said:
"Chieftain Hog refers to you as ’Professor’?"
"Yes, I taught him history,"
Professor Malcolm said with a smile, and even a touch of pride as he waved his pipe:
"Although limited by the Wolf People’s barbaric way of thinking, which makes it hard for them to understand complex human politics, I’ve made some edits to the history of the Continent for them. Nevertheless, in terms of learning attitude, Chieftain Hog is much more diligent than some of my past students.
If you’ve read the papers that Chieftain Hog himself wrote about the Black Disaster, you’d know that aside from the typos, occasional misuse of words, and grammatical errors, he truly counts as one of my students.
But this unique teaching experience hasn’t only benefited Hog. I have also gained insights into the world from the perspective of the Wolf People.
Their unique worldviews, though narrow, are not wrong, so I have begun to question the prevailing view on the Continent of seeing the Wolf People as barbarians.
If I could personally visit Moss Valley, I might be able to present compelling evidence that the history of the Wolf People is not any shorter than that of humans.
In those ancient times, they too developed a civilization system in the Dark Mountain Range, and I believe, from the perspective of life races, they are not inferior to us."
"That’s quite the scandalous view, Professor,"
the colonel muttered:
"You’d get into trouble advocating such ideas elsewhere, especially at a time when the Black Disaster is approaching."
"But this is Transylvania,"
Professor Malcolm hummed, continuing:
"Here we don’t have foolish bloodline purism, nor the arrogant ’human supremacy’; I’ve never understood how some of us, who pride themselves on being civilized, have the nerve to mock elves, dwarves, or other races. We’re essentially the same, and there’s no shame in learning from others.
Moreover, Hog isn’t part of the Black Disaster.
He is a native of Transylvania, one of the original inhabitants of this land recognized by Governor Morphy."
"Yes, Colonel,"
Hog immediately chimed in:
"I even have a citizenship file in the archives of the Crimson Castle Administrative Office, and every one of my tribespeople has complete information registered. After the Black Disaster ends, we will be able to receive citizenship certificates from the administration below."
