Chapter 1346: 454. Hog: You playing with the plague can’t even begin to experience my joy! - [Added Chapter 21/25]_3

We were born in Transylvania, and we have no connection whatsoever with the Dark Mountain Jackals who ignited the Black Disaster.

If anything, our relationship with the Dark Mountain Jackals is similar to that between the Ceylan People, Kite People, and the Nords. Though we all share the same Origin, we have formed distinct groups.

We, too, have internal strife and opposition amongst each other, and even in the same war, we may choose to fight on different sides.

For example, in this Black Disaster, the Transylvanian Wolf People have chosen to stand with humans, just like the Celyon People chose to fight alongside vampires against the Nord occupation of Ice Bay during the last phase of the Second Dark Night War."

"You’ve got a pretty good grasp on history, Chieftain Hog."

Colonel Fraser shook his head and said,

"However, that does not change the reality of the opposition between humans and Wolf People. Mere words are insufficient to convince the Goldenrod Kingdom to accept your existence. I might personally be open-minded enough to sit here and talk with you, but that doesn’t mean my compatriots won’t raise their weapons upon seeing you.

The relationship between the individual and the collective has always been complex.

Moreover, in this war, you have yet to clearly define your allegiance; you haven’t taken any real action to back up your choice.

Positions are not something to be spoken; we only look at actions!"

"You will see."

Hog bared his teeth and said,

"When you enter Pestilence Town, you will see my soldiers, and when The Army of Dark Disaster attacks Transylvania, you will also see Wolf People fighting for Governor Morphy’s army within his forces.

Actually, to put it bluntly, myself and my tribesmen have contributed far beyond your imagination to this land, Colonel, even in the incident at Malo Town, I too made contributions to your fight.

Just because you haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean it hasn’t been done.

On this point, your Dwarf Marshal might be more clued in than you, otherwise, you wouldn’t have accepted Professor Malcolm’s invitation to come and visit me, right?"

"Uh, are you really a Wolf Person? Your thinking is sharper than many humans I’ve met."

Seeing Hog speak bluntly, Colonel Fraser dropped the pretense and said with a straight posture,

"Indeed, Marshal Loren has already received intelligence sent by the Governor’s Office of Transylvania, acknowledging your proactive role in combat at Malo Town and has entrusted me to evaluate your clan.

But Chieftain Hog, you must understand that it’s just a courtesy from the Marshal to Governor Morphy and doesn’t mean he actually values you all that much, and calling them ’Dwarves’ is too rude!

Governor Morphy’s slip of the tongue will definitely cause serious consequences.

Especially when you have more interactions with the Dwarves in the future, such unguarded speech could seriously impact Transylvania’s standing in their eyes."

"Then I’ll say ’Short ones’!"

Hog laughed heartily and said,

"We’re not afraid of Dwarves at all. What we need right now is just for your soldiers to stop coming to Smuggler’s Forest to ’borrow’ our people’s heads for military honors.

I’ve asked you here to discuss this matter!

With Professor Malcolm here to witness, I want to set a contract with you, Commander of the Ceylan People.

During the Swamp War, my clan will be your safest rearguard, and Transylvania’s field hospital will temporarily be located here; we will provide the necessary security for the hospital, but your wounded must obey our rules.

Now this forest belongs to our Bloodclaw Clan!

"This authority has already been recognized by Governor Morphy, and the Crimson Regent has personally promised that Smugglers’ Forest will become an autonomous region of the Bloodclaw Clan, just as Governor Morphy and the half-human Marshal agreed at the outset."

"I also want to reach the same agreement with you.

"I need you to recognize the rule of the Bloodclaw Clan over the forest until the end of the Black Disaster, to avoid us being senselessly dragged into a treacherous backstabbing from our allies."

At this point, Hog paused to listen, then elaborated in a drawn-out tone:

"Of course, the abundant resources of Smugglers’ Forest also require an outlet, and it’s a bit far from Crimson Castle, so Governor Morphy allows us to export some of our surplus pelts and herbs to the Cape Family, exchanging them for the grain we need from the Kato area.

"If you need it, we could even set up a special trade market for the Cape Family near the forest, where you can smuggle all sorts of goods from your Kato area base to Transylvania to make a fortune!

"This way, you can avoid that official trade monopoly contract with the Nordtof Lady.

"All we of the Bloodclaw Clan would require is a bit of an insignificant passage fee, nothing more."

"Enough!"

Major Fraser rebuked irritably:

"I am speaking to you as a soldier of the Goldenrod Kingdom, Chieftain Hog, and it does not involve my family business."

"Hehe, humans are always hypocritical."

Hog flashed his canine teeth in a grin as he retorted sarcastically:

"You bear that surname, yet always try to disown its influence. You’re even worse than Kenbort, that fool knows to use his position as Chief of the Bone-biting Clan to secure more benefits for himself.

"I am always available to work for the Cape Family. My people have already befriended several of your commerce chiefs at the gambling den, and some of those hopeless gamblers who are desperate to recoup their losses owe me money. They’ve promised to connect me, a barbarian chieftain, with the esteemed Count Leon.

"If you are unwilling, that’s your problem, but your father is the finest businessman of the Goldenrod Kingdom, and you can’t change the fact that the shortest route from the Kato area to Transylvania is across Lake Xiuerpres through Smugglers’ Forest.

"Even a wolf-person like me knows this would be a genuinely good deal for the Cape Family, so tell me, do you want this trade route or not? A promise made by you would show your father the talents of his son in this regard.

"You see, there’s no downside for you."

"Hmm..."

Colonel Fraser glanced at Professor Malcolm, who remained silent, and after a few seconds of contemplation, he said:

"In a few days, a commerce chief will come to have a detailed talk with you about this, it’s beyond our current scope of discussion... Hmm? What’s that noise?"

His words were interrupted by a sudden violent shake.

Everyone, including Hog, leaped from their seats, the Jackal Tribe Chief bellowed for his panicked guards to quickly check the lair for any collapsed tunnels, while Professor Malcolm and Fraser looked towards the direction from which the vibration emanated.

"Deep in the swamp..."

Professor Malcolm set down his binoculars, stroked his bearded chin, and said:

"It’s coming from the direction of the Swamp Forbidden Area. The Pestilence Clan is marching into the forbidden territory? Why would they make such a decision under these circumstances?"

"It’s unclear now, but I can’t stay here any longer."

The Colonel whistled, summoning his warhorse to gallop towards him, feeling relieved to no longer have to deal with issues unrelated to the war, he grasped the whip and addressed his mentor and Chieftain Hog:

"I must immediately head to my position. Gentlemen, let’s discuss the rest after the war is over."
