Chapter 1010: 343. Blood Vulture Never Forgets
Maxim’s direct "speech" did not succeed in calming the restless barracks; those rioters, exchanging glances, still intended to rebel, a silent consensus prompting them to shift their feet.
But soon, more family vampires from Maxim’s retinue entered the night scene behind him, with pairs of Blood Wings unfurling, driving even the most stubborn and crazed to despair.
Even though in the Transylvania region, vampires who were part of the Blood Vulture rebellion were hunted by the players like "wild beasts with bounties," in other parts of the continent, the presence of vampires was still quite formidable.
At the very least, ordinary rioters did not have the guts to charge at the defensive line formed by the vampires.
They promptly retreated, and as the first person dropped their weapon, the concept of surrender quickly materialized—the ground soon becoming littered with a pile of miscellaneous blades and some firearms, while the guarded Transylvanian civil servants, with waist sabers strapped on and pen and paper in hand, started registering the roll call.
Facing those dark and still-smoke-filled muzzles, even the wildest prisoners could not showcase their bravery under these circumstances.
They were merely bad, not stupid.
Realizing the vampires of the Blood Vulture Clan meant harm and would truly kill, they showed quite a "cooperative" posture when faced with the inquiries and registration by the civil servants.
In fact, some had thought that considering not more than a hundred vampires and Blood Servants were present, while they had over 2000 braves on their side, if they just mustered up the courage to charge, even the swift-moving vampires couldn’t stop everyone in the dark; most would have a "free future."
But obviously, for a life that only comes once, it was unacceptable to gamble one’s existence on a pack of scum.
Even if they themselves were part of that scum.
This necessary caution, unnoticed by anyone, saved these wretches, for in the darkness just outside the camp, Murphy and Kudell were waiting for "the worst-case scenario" to unfold.
Necessary Evil already hung in the air, emitting an eager hum, the Demon Sword unsure of what command its wielder would give it; it didn’t even know why it was there. But it knew that with just a nod from Murphy, it could start a massacre and taste the blood of life once more.
This was also where Maxim’s confidence lay.
He was a man of Silence and pragmatism, and this operation was the first time Morphy had entrusted him with a task to handle alone. Mark was loyal and thus always worried about potential mistakes on his part.
Knowing his master and companion were safeguarding him in the darkness, the faint-heartedness in him would be ruthlessly slain, returning him to his cold demeanor.
Seeing that the issue with the prisoners had been temporarily resolved, Maxim did not linger.
After requesting a captain from the Cadman People’s Army, under his command, to take charge of the place, he walked alone deeper into the temporary barracks.
This was the second issue he had to deal with tonight, far more important than handling the prisoners.
He had to arrange for Murphy’s Armed Blood Servants, a "special unit" from Transylvania’s past, unique to this damned place on the continent, with no other region fostering such a group. Maxim had once been one of them.
Hence, when it came to the matter of the Blood Servant prisoners, he could empathize.
Although he didn’t say it, Mark also hoped that these Blood Servants being sent back home could have a decent outcome. However, the trouble was that this wasn’t something he could decide based on his personal feelings.
"You should have all heard what I said just now. Now have your commander step forward; I want to talk to him about how we’re going to handle you."
Maxim stood outside the Blood Servants’ barracks. He did not enter but, like before, gave instructions in a voice they could hear.
After a few minutes of waiting, a middle-aged man dressed in the uniform of a Blood Servant Commander from the Prime Blood Eagle Clan, accompanied by five young men, quickly emerged from the darkness.
They still retained some military bearing. Speaking of which, it’s necessary to mention the difference between ordinary Blood Servants and Armed Blood Servants.
Although both serve vampires, Armed Blood Servants are trained as the military forces of the Blood Vulture Clan; thus, when Salockdale was in power, they would assign specific vampires to be in charge of the Blood Servants’ training and discipline.
This tradition started when the Blood Vulture Clan settled in Transylvania and continued until now, with a fixed part of the Blood Vulture Clan’s new initiates each year being selected from the officers among the Armed Blood Servants.
This selection method was quite favorable for the vampire clans, maintaining the combat effectiveness of the Armed Blood Servant forces while deepening their control over this group, ensuring the loyalty of the new family members.
The prosperity of the Blood Vulture Clan over the past few centuries and its tight control over Transylvania were complementary to this selection system.
But this model had its drawbacks.
The direct result was that the Armed Blood Servants held a delicate position in the original Transylvanian society. As humans most closely associated with vampires and most relied upon, the Armed Blood Servants, over hundreds of years of tradition, evolved into a military nobility and a "rentier class" rife with nepotism.
