Chapter 188: Fell Counterattack
Chapter 188: Fell Counterattack
Blood splattered across the brownish-red ground as a huge wolf head rolled, separated from its body by a lethally sharp Wind Cutter spell.
Hao wiped his face after slaying the D-ranked Fell Alpha Dharmwolf, which seemed to be a variant of the species.
"Oh? Shorty Hao! Your Wind Cutter is looking sharper, eh?" praised Rocky in the distance, arriving with the Hal and Yhohan squadrons after slaying the Fell Beasts assigned to them.
With Hao’s kill, their platoon had exceeded their quota for the day by a whole area, and it was time for a nice barbecue session by the pond.
Their target location for tomorrow was also close to their relaxation area, which meant that Hal could scout it out ahead of time while waiting for the meat to cook.
Actually, it didn’t matter much, even if it was a bit far, as Hal could still reach it with the Spirit Sparrow without any difficulties.
He would just have to spend a bit more Chaos Karma, that’s all.
Today marked their third week clearing the marked locations.
With how many Fell Beasts they and the Fire Platoon had killed, Hal doubted whether there would even be a horde at all.
After all, they were probably killing Fell Beasts faster than the Fellkin could produce them.
One clean hit from a strong enough spell and a Fell Beast would perish.
’Oh well, it’s better for things to end up this way, I guess...’ Hal mused as he and his platoon walked to the pond area.
However, there was something that made Hal suspicious.
Why were the Fellkin allowing them to simply eliminate their creations?
Based on his interaction with Arran and Khan in the past, the bastards weren’t and would never be afraid of humans.
The Fellkin even recognized them as an inferior race.
’Then why?’
The only explanation Hal could think of was that they were afraid of Zephyron, the Wind Magna.
Perhaps the Fellkin didn’t have someone as strong as him in the Maegrath Continent?
They soon arrived at the relaxation spot, so Hal dropped his thoughts to help his subordinates set up the chairs, tables, campfire, and the other things they needed.
He shall drink a slightly stronger liquor soda later...
A few minutes later, everything was ready.
Rocky began grilling the Fell Irontusk Boar meat they obtained from the hunts.
While waiting, Hal chose one of the foldable seats, sat comfortably, and summoned the Spirit Sparrow to perform an early surveillance of the next area they would clear.
This would also allow them to complete their quota earlier tomorrow and secure more time for their afternoon barbecue sessions.
The tiny avian appeared from a brownish-green magic circle, but the platoon members only glanced at it before going about their business.
Hal had been doing it every day for the past two weeks, after all...
Soon, the summon flapped its tiny wings, flying higher and farther from their location.
The sparrow’s journey back and forth had always been safe, since they’d already cleared the areas it passed through.
It was only at risk of being destroyed whenever it was surveying the uncleared sites.
Today, too, the journey was hiccup-free.
But then, when the sparrow arrived at the uncleared site, he saw a massive flame tornado rise to the heavens, burning a few towering redwood trees with it before vanishing into vermilion mana particles and leaving behind only charred logs.
Had the flames not been made of mana, the redwood forest would have gradually been reduced to an ashen wasteland.
’That midget!’ Hal cursed inwardly.
Who can summon such strong yet unrefined flames other than her?
They had been given strict orders not to meddle in the other platoon’s marked locations.
One report and she would be punished quite harshly by Zephyron.
Of course, Hal planned to let her off with a mere harsh reprimand from himself, as it was quite difficult for him to rat the poor midget out.
Who knew what whimsical inspiration struck her that she suddenly decided to clear one of his marked locations?
Perhaps part of the reason was because she was clearing one of the two locations close to this one that was assigned to the Fire Platoon, but there had to be something that snapped in that tiny head of hers that pushed her to wreak havoc in one of the locations assigned to him.
The only thing that didn’t cross Hal’s mind was that she had a valid reason why she had crossed over to one of his assigned areas and was fighting there.
Slightly eager to gather evidence, Hal controlled the Spirit Sparrow, making it fly to where Ennya was.
It didn’t take long for the summon to arrive, allowing him to survey the area.
What he saw made his heart tremble.
At a small clearing was the midget and her platoon.
They were on the retreat, chased by five Fellkin Warriors.
There were only eighteen of them, and Ennya herself had blood flowing down on one side of her head, suffering a fairly deep cut on the left side of her forehead.
Her subordinates were in worse conditions.
The recognizable, tall and lean dude with black, spiky hair had the worst injury of them all, having lost an entire hand.
The guy barely had the strength to continue running, and it seemed as though he wouldn’t be able to continue retreating with the platoon soon.
Hal quickly made the sparrow fly past the retreating platoon, positioning it in advance in hopes of tracking their movements, though Hal knew there was a low chance it would work.
Regardless, it shouldn’t be that hard to locate them, since there would be sounds of battle.
Maybe of death, too, if fate willed it.
Hal violently stood up, startling his platoon members.
"B-Boss?"
"Chaos Platoon, prepare for battle! There are Fellkin Warriors close to our location, hunting down the Fire Platoon! We shall assist our comrades!"
Rocky and the others’ eyes widened at their platoon leader’s words, and they quickly scrambled to assemble with their squadrons.
In just ten seconds, they were already in formation, albeit a bit clumsily.
But Hal didn’t care.
He took the lead and quickly sprinted off with his platoon, fading in the dimming redwoods with a racing heart.
’Damn it...Damn it!! You absolutely must hold on, Ennya!’
