Chapter 180: Soloing A Fell Beast
"B-Boss!!" Hao instinctively shouted in worry, wanting to chase after and stop their platoon leader from carrying out such a risky plan.
But he remained firmly grounded by his duty to his squadron members.
The bespectacled squadron leader wasn’t fond of reckless heroics, especially since he wasn’t fully familiar with Hal’s true combat capabilities.
To make matters worse, one of their duties was to ensure that the Chaos Magna Prospect wouldn’t die, even if they had to die for it.
The current situation was the exact opposite of what should be happening.
’Damn it!’ cursed the panicking Hao.
The Fell Zephyr Leopard was upon them; he had already lost the chance to go and help Hal due to a moment of hesitation.
Furthermore, the Fell Beasts attacking Rocky’s and Yhohan’s squadrons—a Fell Shadow Fox and a Fell Venomfang Raccoon—had also locked their respective target squads in place.
Perhaps the only good thing about it was that these two beasts were only D-ranked, which meant they were, at most, comparable to normal C-ranked creatures in terms of combat prowess.
They were far more manageable compared to the Fell Redlands Bush Hog.
Nonetheless, Hao found it hard to focus on the approaching leopard beast and had nearly suffered a direct Zephyr Claw attack from the normally green, now purple-skinned creature, before managing to Zephyr Step out of the way at the last second.
This left the Fell Zephyr Leopard roaring in frustration in front of the Hao Squadron members and to the bespectacled squadron leader’s right.
Rocky and Yhohan didn’t seem to have the same troubled thoughts, but the voice that suddenly echoed a few dozen meters to their northeast still reassured their battle-stressed hearts:
"Focus on your opponents! I’ll finish this elk off as fast as I can and come help you! Hal Squadron, go and assist the Hao Squadron!"
Hal’s words made it seem as though there were no chances of him ever losing to the elk in a one-on-one, which was Hao’s primary worry.
’Don’t die after talking big now!’ thought the bespectacled squadron leader with gritted teeth.
"Hao squadron, assume standard hunting position!"
A few moments later, the battlefield was divided into four.
Rocky’s mastery of earth elemental spells proved superb, especially in defense.
The massive baldy gave the Shadow Fox few options, as its darkness-elemental attacks failed to penetrate the Reinforced Earthen Walls and Earthen Pillars.
Whenever it attempted physical attacks, even Erikson’s subpar Mana Barrier was enough to block them.
A fox, after all, was generally built for ambushes, not direct confrontation, so its strength attribute was severely lacking.
Unfortunately, the Fell Core had greatly diminished its sense of fear, forcing it to fight in an unwise combat style.
Yhohan and her squadron members, on the other side, skillfully contained the Fell Venomfang Raccoon’s fang darts and poison claw attacks.
Strengthened by Kido’s enhancements, Yhohan’s Reinforced Ice Walls were too difficult for the fell beast to break through.
It was faring even worse than the Shadow Fox, as despite having a fell core, it lacked any elemental magic and could only rely on its fangs and claws.
Nonetheless, the beasts were far tougher than their usual forms and could not be taken down easily.
The Hao Squadron was the one having the most trouble.
Not only were their opponent, the Fell Zephyr Leopard, the same rank as the Thunder Elk and the Redlands Bush Hog, but they were also an offensive squadron and lacked defensive skills.
All they had to rely on were their fleet footwork, sharp reflexes, and repositioning skills.
One wrong move or a delayed reaction could mean death.
Three of their members, including Hao, had already had a few close calls in the few seconds of combat.
The Zephyr Leopard was just too ferocious.
Hal caught a glimpse of their battle as he dodged to the side with a [Blink], evading the horrifying lightning charge of the Fell Thunder Elk.
Its crackling antlers struck nothing but air as it skidded to a halt with its massive hooves after missing its target.
Hal instantly grasped that the Hao Squadron was engaged in a lethal battle, just like the one Lucien Winter’s subordinate, Monk, had fought in before his skull was destroyed by a single attack from the Fellkin young master, Arran.
He didn’t realize that the harrowing scene somewhat traumatized him.
Almost instantly, Hal’s attitude changed.
There was a hint of defiant and vicious madness in his eyes now.
He wouldn’t allow any of his subordinates to die, and to do that, he needed to slay this Fell Thunder Elk as quickly as possible.
The cervine beast did not give a flying f*ck about his changes, however, as it unhesitatingly slammed its tough antlers into the brownish red ground, summoning a wave of thunder that sprawled menacingly towards Hal.
Hal simply jumped as high as he could and activated [Glide] to dodge the wide-area, low-altitude attack, enticing the elk to charge at him as he hovered like a juicy, helpless target with a clever scheme in mind.
Sure enough, the cervine’s instincts kicked in.
It quickly charged at him with its thundering antlers, bugling ominously with a sound that resembled intermittent, demonic laughter, as it left behind afterimages of brilliant blue light and brownish-red dust in its wake.
’Yes, just charge straight at me like that...’ Hal thought inwardly as he prepared a deadly spell combination.
In just two seconds, the elk was already upon him, so he quickly executed his plan.
He raised his right arm and pointed three fingers skyward, momentarily distracting the Fell Thunder Elk as a [Gravity Ball] emerged in the skies, eerily silent yet extremely lethal.
Its mere presence was hard to ignore.
This brief lapse in focus caused the cervine beast to overlook the deep blue magic circle on the ground, especially since it was only a moment away from satisfyingly obliterating Hal with a full-speed lightning charge.
The situation was simply an elk’s wet dream.
With a final, triumphant bugle, it flew straight at the perfectly positioned [Gravity Ball] as a [Geyser] erupted from beneath.
The next moment, it rained purple blood and mangled flesh, bones, and hide as a notification, similar to the one that appeared when he killed the Redlands Bush Hog, appeared in front of him:
