Chapter 861: The Fate of an Actor

Chapter 861: Chapter 861: The Fate of an Actor

"How could someone as warm and hospitable as me possibly turn you away?"

Two large-scaled Grudges collided with the tall buildings in the Buffer Zone, and the piercing alarm sounded instantly. To prevent the Ghosts and Monsters from losing control, numerous sentries were stationed here.

"What luck, we were just lost, and now we’ve found a guide."

Han Fei wasn’t nervous at all. As long as he could control those few people before other support forces arrived, no one would know he had been here.

The little girl in the red dress wanted to leave, but she couldn’t break free from Han Fei’s hand. She used to cling to others, driving them insane step by step. Now, for the first time, she felt the urge to escape herself.

"Stop resisting, and I might consider sparing your lives." Han Fei sensed the malice and hostility from the other side, but out of goodwill, he still shouted.

Heartfelt words took on a different tone when they reached others’ ears; no matter how you heard it, it didn’t sound like something a member of the Investigation Bureau would say.

After a few alarms went off, they stopped. Those people actively disabled the alarm because they also wanted to capture Han Fei alive. The Investigation Bureau wouldn’t appear in Hope New City for no reason, and Han Fei’s arrival was likely related to Brother Chou’s disappearance. If they could capture Han Fei in advance, they could gain the upper hand and continue to conceal the news.

"What kind of guards would voluntarily turn off the alarm? Are they trying to double-cross?" Number Five sat in the driver’s seat: "Teacher Gao, I’ll drive the car outside the Buffer Zone first to avoid being tracked, and I’ll come back for you later."

After agreeing on a location, all the children except Number One left with Number Five.

"Why don’t you go with them? Don’t trust me?" Han Fei looked at Number One walking towards him.

"Later, you use the Grudge to move in the opposite direction from us and lead away the pursuers. I’ll handle those few." Number One gave a very reliable impression, as if whatever he promised, he would surely achieve. Han Fei couldn’t gauge Number One’s strength, only knowing he had a Miracle Personality.

Two large-scale Grudges took the lead, covering Number One’s approach. When those murderers activated their Personality Powers and started engaging with the Grudges in a coordinated effort, Number One entered the experimental building.

A faint light flickered, not even a scream was heard, and everything returned to deathly silence.

Minutes later, the rusty iron door was pushed open. Number One emerged, dragging a man entwined with organ specimens, which sent a chill down Han Fei’s spine. The other murderers didn’t even leave behind bodies.

"Let’s go find Number Two. You use Ghosts and Monsters to distract the pursuers, and make as much noise as possible. We need to pin this raid on the Ghosts."

"I’m familiar with that."

Two towering Grudge Energies erupted in the Buffer Zone, and the alarm sounded again. The direction of the Grudge’s departure was exactly opposite to Number One.

The silence of the night was shattered, flashy red lights kept blinking, and the alarm blared. The massive city defense system activated, but by the time the patrol reached the scene, the two large Grudges had disappeared without a trace, as if they had appeared and vanished out of thin air.

After hiding the Investigation Bureau’s car, Han Fei had already rendezvoused with the children. They pried open the mouth of the Specimen Murderer.

The man’s name was Afu, a Specimen Master. He was a criminal implicated in the Ghost Card Case and, because of his "common interests," was well acquainted with many fugitives in New City.

From him, Han Fei also got some very bad news. Those criminals on the Ghost Cards had privileges bestowed by Divine Spirits. They gathered a large group of rebels dissatisfied with the status quo and formed the Night Patrol Guard Team in the Buffer Zone. These rebels, unrelated to the Ghost Card Case, fought on the front line against Ghosts and Monsters and thus gained the recognition of the city’s residents. After multiple expansions, the Guard Team’s numbers already surpassed the New City Law Enforcement Team, becoming an unignorable force in the Buffer Zone.

Even worse, some criminals had infiltrated the management, becoming "Big Shots" who could freely enter and exit the Core City District, making it very difficult to uproot them.

In the subsequent questioning, Han Fei also learned who Little Hong’s master was. Unfortunately, the other party sensed Han Fei’s fear through the little girl in the red dress and fled before a fight even started.

Aside from this information, the only thing that pleasantly surprised Han Fei was learning of Kong Tiancheng’s whereabouts from him.

Those murderers were overjoyed to see the Investigation Bureau’s vehicle, not realizing it carried a "God of Death" with almost maxed out Luck. When it comes to gambling on luck, Han Fei hadn’t lost yet.

"After the Doctor fled, he would definitely go find Kong Tiancheng. Let’s enter the city now and make sure we find that Ghost before he does."

Number Two lay on Number Five’s back, his hands fiddling with something invisible as ripples of fate spread out gradually.

All coincidences and accidents seemed to be woven by Number Two. His Ability was related to Fate, and he appeared to be accumulating these small coincidences to eventually shake the future.

"Let’s use the path of their Night Patrol Guard Team and have this twisted Murderer take us into the city." Number Two stared at the fallen Afu: "Get up. You can’t be alive after Number One’s heavy hand, so stop faking death."

"No matter what you used to do, how many you’ve killed, or how many evil deeds you’ve committed, if you don’t cooperate later, I’ll throw you into this." Han Fei shoved Afu’s head into the Greed Abyss, letting him witness that Mortal Purgatory.

It’s hard to imagine how twisted a person could be to house such a scene within their Brain Sea. Afu’s legs were already trembling. He gazed at the seemingly infinite despair of Black Water, realizing that ultimate evil might just be like this.

"I... will cooperate with you."

Afu’s face was ghostly pale, as if he had just taken a stroll in front of the Ghost Gate Pass.

"Your acting is too fake, come on, relax, take a deep breath, and get into the right state." Han Fei patted his shoulder: "Remember, we were all saved by you, everyone else went to chase those two large-scaled Grudges."

From acting training to script, Han Fei gave Afu a good coaching session on the way. By the time they were approaching the Outer City District, Afu had mostly recovered.

There were also people from the Ghost Card Case criminals among the Law Enforcement Team. With Afu’s guarantee, they smoothly passed through two checkpoints and officially entered Hope New City.

Although it was just the Outer City District, the place gave Han Fei a feeling similar to reality, as if he had returned to the city before the Great Disaster.

"Eighty percent of the people in Hope New City live in the Outer City District. On the surface, it’s very prosperous here, but internally it’s quite chaotic. Humans, once settled, produce all kinds of evil thoughts because of greed." Afu led Han Fei and the others into a dark alley, and when they emerged, everyone had changed into completely new clothes, and Afu had also obtained two temporary passes to enter the Inner City District.

"Only two? You wouldn’t want to separate us and then use these kids to threaten me, would you?" Han Fei slashed Afu’s wrist and stuffed Paperman Fragments inside: "When you have bad thoughts, the paperman will rip your blood vessels open and grow out from your heart."

Afu’s face twitched, realizing that the man in front of him was even more twisted than he was.

"All my assets could only get you two, plus the Inner City District is much stricter than the Outer City District, even with temporary passes, bad luck means you might get stopped."

Walking in the alley, the closer they got to the Inner City District, the less impact the Great Disaster had, and the better the environment became.

"Aren’t they afraid of ghost and monster invasions? The Buffer Zone can only do so much, with so many people gathered, negative emotions are bound to give birth to some filth." Han Fei didn’t quite understand how Hope New City’s defenses couldn’t compare to the Disaster Investigation Bureau, yet this city managed to function normally.

"I was puzzled like you before. I feel ghosts and monsters deliberately left this city." Five followed closely behind Han Fei, carrying Two: "If we have a chance to enter the core area, all questions should be answered."

With Afu as the insider, Han Fei and the others avoided surveillance and patrol teams, and since most equipment was used against ghosts, they encountered no obstacles successfully approaching the Inner City District.

"The person Kong Tiancheng is possessing is in the Inner City District’s hospital. He’s a patient severely polluted mentally. It’s said he’s a friend of the Disaster Investigation Bureau director, who left him in Hope New City to receive treatment from Deep Space Technology."

Han Fei carried Two, pretending to be an anxious father eager to have his child treated. With unbeatable acting and temporary passes, he entered the Inner City District, reaching a hospital dedicated to special personality owners.

Unlike other buildings, the hospital was illuminated without any shadowy corners, and the building was entirely white, with thick curtains in every room, making it impossible to see inside from the outside.

"That person used to live in a special care ward. Later, his ward was replaced by a relative of another Big Shot. Now he resides in the mixed ward in Zone C."

Afu was familiar with a certain doctor at the hospital, who was also secretly a twisted individual: "You only have ten minutes, once time’s up, you must leave the ward immediately."

Walking through the entirely white corridor, Han Fei listened to all sorts of sounds coming from the wards. The hospital’s methods seemed a bit crude, with many patients screaming in pain.

The unpleasant odor in the air grew more noticeable. Han Fei carried Two into a room at the deep end of the hallway, walking through rows of beds, reaching the critical case observation room in the mixed ward.

Afu and the doctor closed the observation room door and quietly drew the curtains.

Inside, Han Fei approached the hospital bed, curious to see who the key person Afu mentioned was.

Slowly lifting the bedding, Han Fei paused when he saw the patient’s face.

No matter how emaciated and unstable the patient on the bed was, he could recognize him at a glance because this patient was one of his few friends.

"Bai Xian?"

In this worst possible future, Bai Xian had survived and become a crucial node of fate.

Previously, Old Bai was just an excellent actor. It was after getting to know Han Fei that he came into contact with the Deep World, his greatest achievement was replacing Han Fei in the Deep World, deceiving all Shallow World players.

"I never thought he’d still be alive." Even though it was in the Shrine Memory World, Han Fei still felt happy, but Two’s next words doused him with cold water.

"Their survival in the worst possible future doesn’t mean they can live in the future you hope for."

"What do you mean?" Han Fei felt like Two was hinting at something.

"If you deeply understand fate, you’ll know that when you gain something, you’ll inevitably lose something else." Two didn’t explain further: "There’s no time, use your Personality Power immediately to see if you can force the ghost lurking in him out."

"Speak clearly, if changing this worst possible future means everyone in this Shrine Memory World will die, are you saying I will give up resisting?" Han Fei’s voice was frightening at this moment.

"If that’s the case, would you stop resisting?" Two chuckled: "Life is a performance you cannot quit, even if you know the script in advance and all the outcomes, don’t you still have to grit your teeth and perform? Because that’s the fate of an actor."
