My ‘Healing’ Game -
Chapter 843: Disaster Investigation Bureau
Chapter 843: Chapter 843: Disaster Investigation Bureau
The voice calling Gao Cheng grew louder in his ear, Han Fei lowered the brim of his hat, but the lazy ghost under the black duckbill hat showed no reaction.
"With my current personality ability, it’s very difficult to interfere with me. How did the opponent manage this?"
Han Fei quietly looked around, but saw no trace of ghosts and monsters.
He perked up his ears to listen carefully; the voice calling Gao Cheng held no malice, simply an intention to lead him somewhere.
Taking a deep breath, Han Fei tried to ignore the voice. But unexpectedly, Gao Cheng’s residual consciousness seemed to be struggling in the Greed Abyss, seemingly desperate to respond to the call.
The mourning nurse, with the curse on her still not fully cleansed, also began to scream, wanting to climb out of the Abyss.
"Could the ghost calling Gao Cheng be their friend?"
The voice became clearer, it was an unfamiliar woman’s voice, gentle, mature, sad, yet restrained.
Stopping, Han Fei looked behind him, walking at the end of the team, and behind him was an empty street, devoid of people.
"What’s wrong?" Class monitor number five noticed Han Fei’s anomaly.
"Did any of you hear a voice calling your names?"
"No, have you been attacked by a ghost?" Number five pulled another child beside Han Fei, but after using personality power to check, found Han Fei was not influenced by ghosts or monsters.
"I need to verify some things, so I’ll leave the rearguard duties to you for the moment." Listening to the voice, Han Fei didn’t continue forward with the team, but instead returned alone.
With his survival experience in the Deep World, typically in such situations he would ignore it; but the fact that Gao Cheng’s memory fragments in the Greed Abyss and the mourning girl wanted him to go made it strange.
Gripping the knife in reverse, Han Fei slowly distanced himself from the main group, following the voice’s guidance to a residential building he hadn’t visited before.
The windows and hallway of the building weren’t boarded up, and it appeared rather ordinary, but upon entering, Han Fei’s gaze changed immediately.
Stuck on the hallway wall were missing person fliers about Gao Xing, the photos on the yellowing paper seemed to be bleeding, with the blurry-faced child in the photos seemingly staring at Han Fei.
"I’ve seen this curse item at the Taste Pavilion, the missing person flyer is Mother Ghost’s item."
Summoning all his focus, Han Fei entered the hallway.
The further he went up, the more fliers lined the walls, dense like a swarm, and the faces on the black-and-white photos began to distort, with the child’s eyes in the photos seemingly gouged out.
"Gao Xing’s eyes were gouged?"
The black fog from the Greed Abyss uncontrollably poured out, and seeing these missing person fliers made Gao Cheng go completely mad, his memory fragments merging into the black fog, desperately eroding the fliers on the wall as if trying to devour all photos of Gao Xing!
Han Fei didn’t stop Gao Cheng; the opponent’s forcible manipulation of the greed black fog would lead to his consciousness fragments being slowly consumed by the Abyss; when Gao Cheng’s self-awareness was fully devoured, Han Fei would become the only master of the Greed Abyss.
Standing in the hallway as shredded paper like snow filled with hate, whenever Gao Cheng saw Gao Xing he’d go mad; hatred etched into his soul, willing to do anything to kill Gao Xing, which might be why he accepted Han Fei.
"Alas..."
A woman’s sigh echoed from the room, the frenzied memory fragments of Gao Cheng gradually calming under the mourning girl’s soothing.
Walking over the paper shards, Han Fei headed towards the room.
Pulling open the rusty security door, in the center of the living room stood a woman, her back to the door, her exposed skin covered with scars sewn like stitches, as if a rag doll torn apart and sewn back together repeatedly.
"Who are you?"
"Stop trying to resist. The closer you get to success, the greater the despair you will finally receive. Miserably live here, numb and pitiful." The woman’s voice carried the same gentle undertone, even if the words were somewhat harsh, they sounded unoffensive.
"I’m not willing." Han Fei said this on behalf of Gao Cheng, feeling the emotions of Gao Cheng within the Abyss. An endless rage and hatred, like a sealed iron box, confining Gao Cheng inside, pounding and crashing, seeking escape even if it meant getting crushed.
"All your choices have predetermined outcomes, fate has written the answer ahead of time. No matter how you struggle, you will ultimately slide into the Abyss, completely losing yourself." The woman, back to Han Fei, stood in the room yet felt far away, as if neither Han Fei nor Gao Cheng could ever reach her: "One of my children has become a devil, I don’t want another to become a heinous monster."
This statement made Han Fei immediately certain of her identity: "Are you Gao Xing’s biological mother?"
Short words, yet they made the woman’s body tremble slightly, as if her wounds twisted in pain: "Stop talking, leave, stay away from the Disaster Investigation Bureau, don’t attempt to defy fate, live miserably somewhere solitary, atone with your remaining life."
"Swapping the two children was done by Gao Cheng’s parents, is a baby guilty?" Han Fei’s voice grew louder, contrasting with Gao Cheng’s sudden silence in the Abyss; apparently shocked his mother would say such things.
"Babies are innocent, so I’ve never blamed you; it’s all my fault, I shouldn’t have let you use his eyes."
All faces on the hallway fliers began to smile, their eyes gradually becoming like Gao Cheng’s: bright, beautiful, clear like precious gems.
"Perhaps there’s another path to take." feeling Gao Cheng’s true desire; he treated the woman as his mother.
Han Fei hoped Gao Cheng could exchange words with his mother, but as he approached her, her wounds began to fester, blooming like decaying flowers on her skin.
Mother has already been taken by Gao Xing; defying the Divine Spirit’s will only hastens mutual destruction.
"Don’t come closer." the woman spoke again, her body like petals, breaking and falling: "You know I am not your mother."
Memory fragments kneel in the Abyss, howling in unwillingness, Gao Cheng’s consciousness chaotic and hysteric, so much as wanting to shred his past.
Various chaotic sounds splattered like fresh blood from Gao Cheng’s consciousness, crazily merging into the Abyss.
"My mom is very gentle; she’s the best mom in the world!"
"She is not your mom!"
"Your greatest greed is that you want to take my mom’s love away!"
"I won’t let you die so easily. I will make you live in Hell like I did, watching everything being taken away, powerless to change it."
As Han Fei ran into the living room, the woman had already left. Only a bloodstained prosthetic eye remained where she stood.
In the Abyss, the fragments of Gao Cheng’s consciousness continuously fused with the Abyss. There’s nothing more painful than being abandoned by the closest person.
"Something’s not right."
Han Fei stared at the prosthetic eye on the ground. If Mother Ghost really didn’t care about Gao Cheng, she wouldn’t have gone out of her way to meet him secretly in such a private manner.
"There’s some truth in Mother Ghost’s words, but that’s not what she truly intends; she can only say it because the Master of Shrine is most likely watching her." Healing starlight shone into the Abyss as Han Fei reached out to Gao Cheng’s consciousness fragments: "Your mom is very worried about you, so she specially came to bring this item to you."
Han Fei picked up the bloodstained prosthetic eye from the ground; Gao Cheng also had a similar prosthetic eye, which he brought from Xinhu Eye Hospital.
"These two prosthetic eyes each contain a ghost and monster. The real message Mother Ghost wants to convey to Gao Cheng should be hidden within the prosthetic eye!"
To summon the ghost within the prosthetic eye, one must sacrifice a live human’s eyeball. Han Fei had always been kind-hearted and had never done something so cruel.
"Too bad, I should’ve tried harder with Teacher Ma earlier."
Han Fei put the two prosthetic eyes together, and a strange thing occurred: the ghosts trapped in the eyeballs seemed eager to kill each other. A large amount of bloodstains oozed from the surface of the prosthetic eye, accompanied by a faint hatred!
"Player number 0000, please note! You have obtained the D-grade mission item - Double Eyes!"
"Double Eyes: D-grade mission item, special Curse Item. All hatred stems from those eyes yearning for light; the prosthetic eye Gao Cheng used during childhood witnessed it all."
"D grade?" Han Fei didn’t expect that putting the two prosthetic eyes together would result in directly achieving D grade: "Most E-grade items involve hatred, while D-grade items are tainted with an unspeakable aura."
With the combined efforts of Han Fei and the Mourning Girl, Gao Cheng’s consciousness fragments gradually regained calm, his influence on the Greed Personality weakened more and more. The personality seemingly belonged entirely to Han Fei now.
Just when Gao Cheng no longer struggled or went mad, Han Fei felt a strengthened connection with the Greed Abyss; this personality began to incessantly use Ghost and Monster power to enhance his body. Every time he devoured Ghosts and Monsters, his body would undergo subtle changes.
"Gao Cheng still held back something? Is this his way of thanking me for healing him just now?"
Running out of the residential building, the sky outside had nearly darkened, Han Fei stayed inside longer than he had imagined.
Class Seven remained at the tail end of the team, Han Fei followed the school’s planned route, sprinting all the way, finally catching up with the Survivors’ team before nightfall.
As soon as he appeared, Wang Chuqing walked over with a stern face: "Where did you run off to? How dare you leave such an important rear task to the students? What were you thinking?"
"I used my brain to think it through." Han Fei glanced at the students, acting perfectly normal with outsiders present, as innocent as could be.
"We’re about to enter the Disaster Investigation Bureau’s controlled zone, be attentive." Wang Chuqing had been coordinating between the school and Survivors all day, utterly believing Yan Lan’s narrative, thinking it was all Yan Lan’s doing, and Han Fei just happened to be saved by Yan Lan.
The sky grew darker; just as night was about to descend, a powerful light was switched on, illuminating the front of the Survivors’ team.
After the disaster, Survivors mostly dared not turn on lights at night, fearing the attention of Ghosts and Monsters. But within this Disaster Investigation Bureau, the bright light pierced the darkness, and the tall building in the distance stood like a lighthouse, guiding all who survived.
The exhausted crowd seemed to have renewed strength, slowly entering the Bureau’s practical control zone under the guidance of the light beam.
The rumbling of engines echoed as modified cars packed with food and water drove out from the Bureau, driven by individuals with special personalities.
In this city rampant with Fierce Ghosts, vehicles and dangerous Weapons could only be operated by those with special personalities; ordinary people affected by Ghosts and Monsters during operation suffered very serious consequences.
"You have entered the Disaster Investigation Bureau! Please temporarily stay where you are for rest! Repeat! Everyone stays put!"
Doors opened as Disaster Investigation Bureau members in uniform disembarked from the cars. While distributing food and water, they also unloaded special equipment from the vehicles.
The Survivor group of three thousand was divided into ten parts by them; all who passed mental testing and personality assessment could receive food and water along with three meal vouchers.
"These people are so efficient, much stronger than our school." Wang Chuqing stood with Han Fei: "When it comes to testing, hold back a bit, don’t be mistaken for a Ghost and get eliminated."
"Don’t worry, I am very familiar with the Bureau’s chief."
"That joke wasn’t funny at all." Wang Chuqing patted Han Fei’s shoulder: "For someone like you, meeting her would be a dead end. The female chief won’t tolerate any nonsense; she’s the Disaster Investigation Bureau’s banner, the lighthouse in every Rebel’s heart."
"I’m not kidding."
The long testing line quickly reached Han Fei, and as he looked at the equipment in front, alarms blared before he could react.
The device flashed extreme danger and severe Mental Pollution in red letters, the red glow symbolic of Fierce Ghosts shone on Han Fei’s face, scaring other Survivors into quickly retreating.
A circle cleared around Han Fei; he silently sat in his chair, also a bit perplexed about the situation.
