Chapter 777: Chapter 777: Us Between the New and Old Eras
Han Fei did not deliberately hide his whereabouts; he was always watching his surroundings, walking towards less crowded areas outside the venue.
The jubilation was still going on inside the venue, and no one could imagine that a bloody and dangerous slaughter might erupt outside. The residents of Smart New City had been too comfortable for too long.
"This Smart New City and the Old City District really do look completely different. Everywhere there are virtual screen ads, surveillance cameras are densely packed, the roads are filled with autonomous cars, the sidewalks have various types of automatically operated public facilities, as well as robot messengers and city managers controlled by Smart Brains. This place undergoes new changes every year, in contrast to the Old City District, which is like dead water."
The various virtual screens lit up the night sky, and between the towering skyscrapers, a space train was being planned. Human imagination and all expectations for the future were concentrated in this city; it was like the jewel in the crown of humanity.
"Fu Sheng ushered in a new era, it’s a pity that no one in the world remembers his name other than me." Han Fei looked off into the distance, where there was a skyscraper hundreds of meters tall on the left side of Smart New City. That was where the headquarters of Eternal Life Pharmaceutical were located.
Unlike Deep Space Technology, which adhered to openness, integration, and an enterprising spirit, Eternal Life Pharmaceutical’s building was off-limits to outsiders, making it one of the most mysterious places in the Xinhu Smart City District.
"Fu Sheng is no longer here; what kind of era am I about to face?"
Han Fei took another step forward when he suddenly looked up. The last autonomous car passed by on the road, and all the virtual advertising screens in the whole section displayed errors. The surveillance cameras seemed to have been hacked as well, and the lights around Han Fei went out completely.
"Sunshine Boy, true gender female, personality shy and introverted..." A man wearing a raccoon dog mask appeared under the streetlight out of nowhere: "You look very different from your psychological profile. Seems like you really are a freak!"
"Is it just you?" Han Fei spoke in the tune he used for singing, different from his normal speaking voice.
"It’s not easy to break into Smart New City. That group of Cocoon House Hackers went to great lengths just to buy us three minutes." The raccoon dog spoke while approaching Han Fei.
"You’ve already wasted ten seconds."
"Wasted, did I? Look around you, heh." The raccoon dog put on special gloves designed to tear off a large chunk of flesh upon contact.
As they conversed, members of the Murder Club, hidden in the area, also emerged one after another, each emanating a powerful murderous aura.
"Ever heard of flash murder? Everyone gathers at a designated spot, at a designated time, to kill a designated target. We’ve done similar things in many places before, but this is a first for the Smart District; you could say you’re setting a precedent." A man wearing a crocodile mask said in a squeezed voice.
"We will dispose of you within three minutes, dismember your body, and each carry away a part, making you disappear from this area." Next to the crocodile was a woman wearing a starfish mask.
"Dismember someone in three minutes? I love it when you guys talk big." Han Fei lifted his head, revealing a smile on his face: "You think you can do what I can’t?"
As soon as he spoke, Han Fei and the Murder Club members all sprang into action at the same time.
It was evident that the members trying to surround and kill Han Fei were all well-trained, but their usual training targets were fundamentally different from Han Fei.
To quickly reduce the enemy’s numerical advantage, Han Fei struck with devastating force.
Before the enemies could surround him, he launched an aggressive sprint, moving astonishingly fast in the dark.
Before the raccoon dog could react, a heavy punch smashed into his face.
The mask shattered, the bridge of his nose collapsed, and the raccoon dog’s face caved inwards, bits of the mask stuck to his flesh.
The raccoon dog, who had just put on his gloves, fell rigidly to the ground.
The others were well aware of the raccoon dog’s skills, but they were not like ordinary people. Seeing the raccoon dog knocked down did not frighten them but made them more frenzied instead.
A knife made of a special material whizzed past Han Fei’s head. He rolled forward and, utilizing the surroundings, drew his "weapon."
He dragged the unconscious raccoon dog by the legs, using him as a meat shield. While blocking attacks, he launched a ferocious counterattack.
Han Fei never thought of running away. These lunatics were there for the police to handle; following their lead should reel in a "big fish."
The club’s high-level members were all physically fit and proficient in fighting and killing. There was another significant difference from ordinary people; it seemed that pain could further stimulate their potential, making them faster.
"Did the ’Unspeakable Power’ change them?"
Once the club members had the intent to kill, they lost all reason, and each of them suffered from severe psychological disorders. Murder utterly freed the sick self within them.
"Butterfly likes to incite normal people to commit crimes, while the Murder Club seems to prefer recruiting born psychopaths, gathering all the evil of the mortal world."
Before the three minutes were up, the club members surrounding Han Fei were already down on the ground. Han Fei didn’t want to reveal himself yet; he quickly left the scene as the last seconds ticked away.
But just as he was about to leave the area, a ticking sound began, like the hand of a mechanical clock moving forward.
He stopped in his tracks, feeling a prickling at the back of his neck as he sensed a fatal threat.
Quickly grabbing the nearly dead raccoon dog man off the ground, Han Fei used him as a shield and looked into the darkness.
"I don’t want to do anything to you, I just want to get to know the new member who joined us," said a woman emerging from the shadows wearing a Death God mask, her movements graceful, her demeanor nothing like that of the Murder Club’s high-level members, "But I never expected that Sunshine Boy would turn out to be you — the Joker."
Hearing the Female Death God’s voice, Han Fei’s first reaction was to charge at her with his "meat shield" raised, hoping to close the distance, and then deliver a fierce slam!
"No matter who you are, once you’ve looked in that mirror, you’re one of us. Murdering between core members is forbidden by the Divine Spirits," the Female Death God said without visibly moving, yet maintaining a safe distance from Han Fei.
"Being able to arrive here from the venue so quickly, I’m fairly certain I know who you are," said Han Fei, realizing he couldn’t catch up in a short period of time. Another idea bubbled up in his mind — Ye Xian participated in the preliminary selection at Perfect Life, and as a Perfect Life account holder, if Han Fei could ascertain Ye Xian’s login times, he might find a way to bring him down.
"It doesn’t matter if you know who I am, identity is irrelevant, you’ll understand that sooner or later." The Female Death God’s gaze shifted from Han Fei to the highest buildings in Smart New City, "You’re very lucky to have caught the last train. This city is about to undergo a drastic change soon."
"A drastic change?"
"The creator of the new era, the legend of the old era, Fu Tian has been confirmed dead; his much-praised perfect creation is also showing flaws. The seventh-generation Smart Brain has shown weaknesses, and the dark tide of the night will soon rush into everyone’s Brain Sea," the Female Death God said from a safe distance, gesturing to Han Fei, "No one can stop it, the locks of destiny have been opened, they’re coming back."
"When you say ’they,’ you mean the things from the other side of the mirror, right?" Han Fei felt she meant to talk about Fu Sheng, but unfortunately, the old man had been forgotten by people; only Fu Tian was remembered."
"Compared to them, we’re like ants living in the crevices between the new era and the old era, all we can do is look up," the Female Death God kept retreating and vanished onto the main street as the lights came on.
"She sure ran fast, that woman definitely had murderous intent before, luckily I noticed in advance," Han Fei said, deciding to leave before surveillance fully restored to avoid trouble.
Soon after his departure, city mechanical patrolmen and policemen arrived at the scene and immediately began seal-off investigations.
Watching the police bustle, an autonomous car silently stopped at the periphery of the gala venue, and the female passenger inside took off the Death God mask.
"What kind of monster is he? I was discovered even from such a distance?" The woman’s back was soaked with cold sweat, she quickly dismantled and destroyed the prohibited weapon, and swiftly changed clothes: "I shouldn’t have acted rashly, he’s definitely not a normal person!"
Pulling out her mobile phone, the woman made several calls in a row: "Go and check the records of participant number 127, Sunshine Boy, for me. I need his information within twenty-four hours, no matter the cost!"
After hanging up, the woman’s mood was still unsettled, "With things being too risky lately, I can’t use real people to relax, I’ll have to make do with NPCs from the simulation game for now."
The woman set her vehicle to home mode, wiped away the cold sweat, and put on her portable virtual reality gaming headset.
Having evaded the police, Han Fei didn’t linger and hurried to the Old City District, managing to return home before midnight.
No matter what big events happened in the outside world, he was determined to play his game every day.
It was because of this game that Han Fei had become an extremely disciplined person.
"I logged off in the Black Rain Area, I don’t know what I’ll encounter when I log back in, alas, life is hard."
Lying in the gaming pod, Han Fei fitted his gaming headset.
A crimson hue covered everything and when he opened his eyes again, he was overwhelmed by a bone-chilling coldness.
Looking ahead, an old man with a huge black plant on his back was squatting in a corner of the room. He was surprised by Han Fei’s arrival, but immediately covered his mouth, signaling Han Fei to remain silent.
Without an exit button, Han Fei was also on high alert, taking Rebirth out of his Item Bar, his palm lightly touching the Ghost Pattern on his chest.
"What is the old man afraid of?"
Following the old man’s gaze toward the window, Black Rain was falling on the sinister streets, washing away the bloodstains slowly.
As Han Fei approached the window, the old man panicked and waved his hands frantically, as if his soul was about to leave his body.
Han Fei stopped moving and remained still.
After a few seconds, a bizarrely deformed monster appeared on the street; it resembled both human and beast, its grotesquely large left ear with a child’s face, and its enormous body dragging in the rain, clothed in dresses made from the outfits of numerous children stitched together.
"Player number 0000, please note! You have discovered the Divine Spirit’s work number ten — Truth Listener."
"Truth Listener (Large-scaled Grudge): Every personality defect is caused by childhood misfortune. Those children heard too many things they shouldn’t have, and they turned into a monster."
"Attention! Keep quiet, do not make any noise!"
