Chapter 620: D-Class Curse Item
Chapter 620: Chapter 620: D-Class Curse Item
The eye of the monster outside the window almost occupied the entire window, its body immensely huge, carrying an oppressive force greater than hatred.
"Comparing it to Gesheng, it falls short, not Unspeakable, but stronger than hatred?"
Being stared at by that enormous eye, Han Fei felt as if he was facing a God Statue that had stood for hundreds of years, unable to hide any of his secrets.
Black Blood slid down the window frame, the Painter’s bones made a chilling sound of being crushed, his flesh curling to the sides, the window on his back seemed about to open.
Though the window was merely painted, it felt as if there was a real world beyond it.
As the window was gradually pushed open, Blood Silk began to appear in the eye.
In just a second or two, the crimson Blood Silk completely occupied the massive pupil, reflecting Han Fei’s figure within the Monster’s eye.
However, the Han Fei seen by the monster was different from the normal Han Fei.
Enduring tremendous pressure, Han Fei faced the monster outside the window, discovering that the self in the Monster’s eye was two different people.
A regular him stood in front, with another him behind, covered in blood, mouth bearing a hysterical smile.
The two selves stood back to back, one forever without a smile, the other forever maintaining a smile.
"Is this monster the real form of Number Four? Does all the Painter’s power come from Number Four?" Han Fei stepped forward, and three forces of hatred advanced with him to prevent any mishaps, surrounding the Painter in the middle.
"What should I do to communicate with the person outside the window?" Han Fei wanted to communicate with the monster outside the window, but neither the Painter nor the monster outside had spoken.
Black Blood dripped heavily, the Painter’s body was torn into a disfigured shape, and if the window kept being forced open, the Painter would be completely torn apart.
The scar marked "4" on the arm stopped bleeding, the Painter reached out his hand towards a head of a faceless woman in the Shrine.
Han Fei roughly understood the Painter’s intention, the other wanted to take away the head of the faceless woman, and if Han Fei disagreed, the Painter was ready to perish together, releasing the monster outside the window.
"Taking away this hatred is your demand, right? Actually, it’s not impossible." Han Fei pulled up a chair and sat next to the Shrine, he was actually the real owner of this Department Store.
"I never intended to harm you, all I have done was for self-preservation. Anyone visiting my residential area would find, I am a typical pacifist, advocating neighborly harmony, pursuing a happy and stable life." Han Fei had once faced Gesheng alone, he acknowledged that the monster outside was terrifying, but he was not afraid.
"The Death Building, Plastic Surgery Hospital, and Paradise lay closely together, with Paradise being the most mysterious, hiding the most secrets. If you’re willing to join us in exploring Paradise, you can not only take this head of hatred away, but also seek us out whenever you face any hardships."
Han Fei opened the Attribute Panel, glanced at the still gray exit button, then pressed the Master-level Acting switch in his Brain Sea.
"Honestly speaking, I’ve forgotten some past events, but from all the clues I’ve gathered, the hope of saving all the numbered orphans rests with me."
"Perhaps I can heal their pain and rescue them from the nightmare of despair."
Looking at the giant eyes outside the window, Han Fei stood up, "You and I have met outside before, you should remember what Number Four said to me."
When the Painter heard about the Number Four orphan, waves stirred across his previously impassive face. He had wanted to save those children, but back then, all he could do for them was to paint colorful windows on the sealed underground walls.
"I am about to do what you couldn’t achieve before. I don’t expect you to help me wholeheartedly but hope you can cooperate with me a little. After the deed is done, we’ll split the secrets within the Xinhu Paradise, and I can also return this head full of hatred to you."
Han Fei turned toward the direction of the Paradise Maze, "Four floors underground at the Plastic Surgery Hospital, you too have heard Number Four’s warning. After passing all the games in the Paradise, a monster will be resurrected inside me, taking over everything I am. Yet, even faced with these threats of death, I will not stop because I know there are things more important than my own life, things that must be done by someone."
Every word Han Fei said was the truth; he was well aware of the dangers of the Paradise, but he knew even better that if he stopped now, everything he currently had could be destroyed one day soon.
He could no longer accept seeing his neighbors, whom he already considered family, soul-scattered.
"If someone has to go forward, I hope that person is me."
Han Fei truly thought so, and with his master-level acting and devilish voice, every word he spoke resonated deeply.
The Painter, numb to everything, twisted his neck and looked at Han Fei from a strange angle.
He remained silent, and no one knew what he was really thinking.
A few seconds later, cracks appeared in the window on the Painter’s back, and the image of Han Fei in the giant pupil became clearer.
The monster outside the window seemed to remember something; the Han Fei in its eyes began to transform, his skin softening and height decreasing, as if reverting from an adult back to his childhood.
As Han Fei’s figure changed, the monster became increasingly uncontrollable. Its eye was almost overtaken by blood red, and the oppressive fear seemed almost to crush Han Fei.
"It remembers me..."
Han Fei and the monster locked eyes; he stared at the monster’s giant pupil as if looking into a life-size mirror, where the mirror reflected the memories of the monster, showing Han Fei’s true childhood appearance.
The ever unsmiling Han Fei and the ever smiling Han Fei stood back to back.
They both returned to their younger selves, the two children back to back slowly merging. Just as they were about to become one, the monster’s giant eye was punctured. Blood splattered on the window, and a roar came from outside, shaking the entire department store.
The black window’s glass cracked widely, the fissures spreading to the Painter’s body. It seemed that fully opening this window would cause his soul to scatter, which seemed to be his purpose in existence.
Raising his arm, the Painter controlled the window at the last moment, all the black blood flowing back into the scar. The pattern of the window on his back slowly returned to normal, and the giant pupil disappeared.
The window became a normal window painting, but the wounds all over the Painter’s body did not disappear; now was his weakest moment.
Standing up, the Painter did not say a word, silently walking toward the department store’s back exit.
He did not agree to Han Fei’s request, nor did he take the headless woman’s skull; even his facial expression did not change, still numb.
Mirror God sensed an opportunity and communicated with Han Fei through the shrine, ready to take direct action.
But Han Fei shook his head. After seeing the window behind the Painter, he felt that the price to pay for killing the Painter was too great.
Once the monster outside the window was released, it was hard to say whether they would win or lose.
Moreover, the pressing priority was to enter Paradise to recover their memories and incidentally rescue that group of players. If that group of players was ignored, more people would end up mistakenly entering the Deep World through the Paradise Maze.
"We don’t have a hundred percent certainty of killing the Painter. Once he escapes, all plans will be delayed."
To survive in a place like the Deep World, blind killing was not a viable strategy. Of course, pure kindness and tolerance weren’t options either.
Han Fei didn’t make a move, and the Painter safely reached the back door of the department store. Just as he opened the door and was about to step out, he suddenly stopped.
Slowly twisting his neck, the Painter pulled something out of a scar on his arm and threw it on the ground.
To prevent Han Fei from encountering danger, Xu Qin directly picked up the blood-stained object from the ground to examine it.
It was a wrinkled photo soaked with blood, she carefully unfolded it, and inside was a hard candy wrapped in it.
"Was that candy a birthday present the Painter gave to Number Four? Has the orphan Number Four not eaten it yet?"
Han Fei first took the photo, which was densely packed with thirty-one children, but there were thirty-two numbers below, from zero to thirty-one.
Because so much time had passed, the memories that made up the photo had also blurred, and the faces of those children had rotten away. Han Fei looked several times but couldn’t find himself.
"Attention Player 0000! You have successfully discovered a D-class Curse Item—their group photo."
"Their group photo (D-class Curse Item): When someone among them cannot have their name spoken, it indicates the existence of something Unspeakable among them."
"Attention! This photo may bring you great disaster, do not recite their numbers!"
"D-class?" Han Fei’s hands holding the group photo stiffened mid-air. This was his first encounter with a D-class Curse Item: "The Painter still had this thing on him?"
"It’s fairly normal. Initially, the Butterfly as the owner of the Death Building had access to two shrines and the unspeakable shed carcasses underground, he’s relatively poor compared to the Butterfly," Mirror God nonchalantly said, as someone who had seen the wider world.
"That’s also true." Han Fei placed the group photo into the item bar. The photo seemed normal at a glance, but if all their numbers were recited, the curse on the photo might be triggered, and probably everyone nearby, including the one reciting, would be curse-killed.
"It’s a decent trump card." After putting away the group photo, Han Fei picked up the very ordinary candy.
"Attention Player 0000! You have successfully discovered an E-class mission item—the Fate-Changing Candy."
"Fate-Changing Candy (E-class mission token): This candy changed his fate and might also change yours."
"Attention! This candy can be used inside the Shrine Memory World, possessing a special effect!"
The Painter left, but he left Han Fei two very important items.
"That guy is quite tsundere, coming in without a word and casually dropping a D-class Curse Item when leaving."
Han Fei did not think it was his argument that persuaded the Painter, but rather the monster locked outside the window that chose him.
"You suggest waiting to explore Paradise together, then returning the faceless woman’s head to the Painter. The Painter just left without taking the faceless woman’s head and also left behind two ’big gifts.’ Does this mean he has agreed?" Mirror God appeared beside the shrine, looking at the faceless woman’s head, weighing the hatred in his eyes as if pricing it.
"We’ll take the faceless woman’s head now, and when the time is right to start exploring Paradise, I’ll place her head back in the shrine for you to guard," Han Fei planned everything, "Paradise might hold the last shrine that Fu Sheng left for me. This time, I should be able to see clearly what sort of person he was."
"Han Fei, I still feel you shouldn’t trust Fu Sheng blindly. The Old Building Chief is deeply obsessive. To achieve his goals, he could do anything." Mirror God hesitated before speaking. "I’ve seen him with my own eyes... reborn from his own child, just to go to even darker, more desolate parts of the Deep World."
Hearing Mirror God’s words, Han Fei’s expression also became serious. He walked over to the window, looking at the Paradise enveloped by the night.
"Are you suggesting that he might attempt to be reborn in me this time?"
Withdrawing his gaze, Han Fei looked at the three figures of hatred beside him, suddenly revealing a very relaxed expression, "If the Old Building Chief wants to harm me, would you prefer to help him or help me?"
Xu Qin firmly stood by Han Fei’s side. Zhuang Wen, unfamiliar with Fu Sheng, naturally chose Han Fei as well.
Mirror God was momentarily stunned, then seemed to understand Han Fei’s meaning, "Compared to him, you definitely are the more suitable person."
"That makes sense, Fu Sheng should understand this too." Han Fei’s path differed from Fu Sheng’s, he believed his own choice was the correct one.
Munching on a pig heart, Han Fei left the department store with the help of the two figures of hatred, completing a G-class task, and then logged off the game after returning to the Death Building.
Removing the gaming helmet, Han Fei climbed out of the gaming pod and immediately began searching online for information related to Paradise.
Fu Tian was from Xinhu who lived in the Outer City District as a child. Based on the information online, Han Fei finally determined that the Paradise Fu Sheng visited in his childhood was Xinhu Paradise located in the North Suburb.
The park had been abandoned decades ago, later bought by Eternal Life Pharmaceutical along with the land, simply rebuilt, and turned into a privately run Paradise not open to the public.
"If it’s not open to the public, that could be tricky."
Han Fei glanced at the clock on the wall; he had left the game quite early today, it was only half-past three in the morning.
After pondering for a moment, Han Fei changed his clothes and left his house.
Considering he had just stirred up a major news event last night, Han Fei now dared not walk through the main gate of the neighborhood, fearing being staked out by reporters, so he climbed the wall to leave the area.
