My ‘Healing’ Game -
Chapter 585 Medicine
Chapter 585: Chapter 585 Medicine
The Boss’s eyes were fixed on the bulletin board, his gaze lingering on an old photograph.
The background of the photograph was taken inside a certain hospital ward, which struck a familiar chord.
"Huh?"
Drawing closer to the bulletin board, the Boss found that he could faintly make out several bloodstained footprints in the photo, identical to the ones they had seen under the bandages.
"Did the blood footprints in the corridor run into the photo?"
His face nearly pressed against the bulletin board, the Boss touched the blood footprints in the photo with his finger, feeling a sticky sensation as though he had actually touched blood.
Quickly stepping away from the photo, the Boss wiped his finger on his clothing, then looked towards Big Fish.
The lights flickered again, and during the transition, the Boss saw someone behind Big Fish, wearing a white lab coat, standing back to back with him.
"What the hell?"
The lights in the corridor quickly returned to normal, and the person behind Big Fish disappeared again.
Rubbing his eyes, the Boss and Big Fish looked at each other.
"Boss, do you think this Hidden Map could possibly be a horror instance?" Big Fish’s voice trembled as he clearly felt someone against his back, yet at that time, the Boss had been standing right in front of him.
"Horror instances should have been deleted," the Boss also felt shaken, as if he had forgotten something very important: "Let’s not stay in open places, standing in the corridor like this makes me as uneasy as walking down the street without clothes."
"Okay.", Big Fish reached behind him to make sure nothing was there before he dared to turn around.
But as he looked behind him, the lights in the corridor dimmed once more.
This time, the flickering lasted longer, and when the lights came back on, Big Fish, stiffened in body, stared straight ahead at the end of the corridor.
Goosebumps rose as Big Fish sensed something in the darkness drawing him in, he even felt as if someone was waving at him.
The light at the other end of the corridor went out and didn’t come back on, the darkness seemed to be creeping towards them, bit by bit.
"Boss, were those lights off just now?"
"I’m not sure either."
The two players looked down the empty hallway as the lights went off again.
They moved closer to each other, trembling, their skin slowly losing its warmth, growing very cold.
Seconds later, the lights came back on, and another light at the end of the corridor went off, bringing the darkness one step closer to them.
"Shall we head back to Building One first? Let’s think long term, Qiangwei should be safe with her strength," Big Fish clutched the Boss’s sleeve.
"I think so too." The Boss pulled out an ink pen he had pilfered from his pocket and started drawing a symbol used for internal communication by Inevitable Truth on the white wall next to the bulletin board.
Before he could finish, the corridor lights went out again.
In the pitch darkness, a dense shadow was approaching, step by step.
"Stop, stop drawing!" Big Fish pulled the Boss back as the lights came back on.
But to their horror, all the lights in front of them went out, and the darkness had already reached their side.
"Run! Run!"
The Boss dropped the pen, and he and Big Fish turned and dashed toward the entrance; the corridor was half dark and half light, eerily strange.
Without hesitation, they rushed to the safety door, but as they were about to open it, they suddenly found the door had been locked at some point, with bloodied bandages still clinging to the door gap.
"Has someone been following us this whole time?" Big Fish shook the door desperately, and as he prepared to kick it down, the lights in the corridor went out again.
Darkness flowed like water, creeping silently like a venomous snake, inching closer and closer, accompanied by the unsettled rustling noises.
"I can’t take it anymore!" Big Fish was not very brave to begin with, and he couldn’t stand being frightened like this any longer. He fiercely kicked at the security door.
The loud noise echoed through the building, but the thin security door refused to budge.
"That’s not right!" Big Fish was about to kick a second time when he felt something brush against his back, the sudden touch sending him leaping forward like a startled beast.
Turning his head back, in the darkness where he couldn’t see, it seemed that right before his face was another face.
The sound of an electric current hissing came to life, and the light above Big Fish and the Boss turned on.
Down the entire corridor, now only the lights above their heads remained lit.
"There’s another door outside the security door. Let’s go upstairs! See if we can jump out the window and escape!" The Boss had never seen a ghost or monster, but the current atmosphere had scared him to the core. There was definitely something in the darkness chasing them!
Tumbling and scrambling, they ran into the stairwell, not daring to linger in the corridor, and randomly burst into the first ward near the stairway on the second floor.
"Open the window! We’ll jump down!" The Boss, not as fast as Big Fish, followed him into the ward while keeping an eye on what was behind them, urging Big Fish to move quickly.
"Jump? Jump where?" Big Fish looked around the sealed ward. There wasn’t even a window in the room, which felt unbearably stifling.
"No window?! Then let’s switch to another room, quick!" The Boss turned to go out; his hand had just touched the door handle when the lights on the second floor went out.
The Boss was intending to rush out, but seeing the lights go off, his hand on the door instantly shifted to closing it, almost subconsciously shutting the door.
"Shh!"
Covering their mouths and noses, the Boss and Big Fish slowly backed away, bending over, ready to make a run for it when the lights came on again.
Breath held, waiting in silence, but the lights in the corridor remained stubbornly off.
The uneasy atmosphere spread in the enclosed room, and Big Fish turned to look at the Boss beside him, only to see a blurry shadow.
He gestured to the Boss, but before he could get a response, a strange noise came from outside the door.
A cart for transporting emergency patients rolled down the hallway, its plastic wheels pressing against the floor as if they were about to fall apart at any moment.
The wheels made an exceptionally clear noise due to the surrounding silence.
The cart moved closer and closer until it stopped right next to the room where Big Fish and the Boss were hiding.
The door was pushed open, and a child’s laughter filled the ward. She joyfully asked someone—can I cry today?
Murmurs in the corridor, a chilling voice where it seemed like they were pointing at the child, talking about something. They prodded her body and gestured across her face with various tools.
Soon after, a heavy object was thrown onto the cart, the girl’s cheerful voice still echoing in the hallway.
"Can I cry today?"
"Doctor Uncle, I don’t want to keep smiling non-stop anymore!"
Another heavy object landed on the cart, the girl’s mechanical voice came to an abrupt halt, and the cart was pushed away into the distance.
Ten seconds later, the lights in the corridor finally turned on, the pale light streaming through the crack of the door into the room where Big Fish was hidden.
"Boss, we can go now." He turned his head to look at the Boss, but the Boss’s face was wracked with pain, his palm fiercely scratching his own face.
"What’s wrong with you?"
"I think I’ve heard that girl’s voice somewhere before, but I can’t remember. She seemed to have saved us." The Boss contorted his face from his own scratching: "I really have forgotten something."
"Forget about that, let’s escape first!" Big Fish pulled the Boss up, he opened the door ready to head to the next ward, but he froze the moment he stepped out.
A huge splatter of blood stained the white walls, as if someone had just been killed there.
"This is more than just a little bloodshed."
Big Fish fought back the urge to vomit and grabbed the Boss to push open the door of the adjacent ward, but to his despair, it seemed that the doors to the wards on both sides of the second floor were locked.
The safety door was locked, and so were the doors to the wards; the two of them were trapped inside Building 2, with no way to escape.
"Is there no way out? Shall we go downstairs?" Big Fish looked at the Boss. Ever since they heard the laughter of the girl, the Boss had been acting a bit strange.
"Let’s chase after that cart and find that girl." The Boss patted Big Fish’s shoulder. "I’m scared too, but think about it, this is just a game, at worst it’s just a death. I can assure you that if your account is destroyed because you protected me, I’ll compensate you twice the market price."
"It’s not about the money, I really feel something is not right."
"I also feel something’s off," the Boss pointed to his head. "When I met Han Fei this morning, he was acting very strange, not at all like an actor. His eyes were that of a homicidal maniac. He also told me that we had already arrived at the Hidden Map, it’s just that we had lost some memories."
"Memory loss? You believe such nonsense?" Big Fish thought the Boss might have been frightened out of his wits.
"A normal game map definitely can’t alter memories, but what if this place has a Black Box?" the Boss squinted his eyes, a cold light hidden at the bottom of his gaze. "All these anomalies have already explained a lot! The Black Box we’re looking for might just be right here!"
Ever since Eternal Life Pharmaceutical announced the will of its deceased chairman, the Black Box was no longer a mere noun. It symbolized the original shares of Eternal Life Pharmaceutical, representing endless wealth and the voting rights that could influence the future of humanity.
"Boss, are you sure?"
"I’m not certain, but I do know that when my wealth soared, it was during a time of nationwide panic and anxiety." The Boss gritted his teeth, held back the fear in his heart, and followed the trail of blood from the wheels: "Since it’s just a game, why not take a big gamble?"
The lights in the hallway went out.
This time, the Boss didn’t run away; he and Big Fish backed up against each other and moved forward.
The first floor of Building 2 was completely dark, and the lights on the second floor were also gradually going out, as if the darkness itself was chasing the Boss and Big Fish forward.
Second floor, third floor, fourth floor...
The Boss and Big Fish chased all the way to the fourth floor, stopping at the stairwell entrance. They looked into the corridor. The blood trail was interrupted, the girl was nowhere to be seen, and there was only a Nurse in uniform cleaning the floor.
"Where’s the girl? Was she moved to one of the wards?" The Boss stared at the Nurse in the corridor, slipping his hand quietly into his pocket and pulling out a scalpel.
"Boss, don’t be rash."
"It’s just for self-defense."
Holding the scalpel in a reverse grip, the Boss quietly approached the Nurse who was cleaning. The closer he got, the more he felt that the back of this person was familiar.
When he was only two or three meters away from the Nurse, the Boss suddenly stopped. He seemed to recognize the person in front of him and tentatively called out, "Acu?"
The Nurse cleaning heard the Boss’s voice and stopped his actions, appearing to be slightly stunned for a moment.
"Is that really you? I remember you were one of the first players to go missing in the maze; I didn’t expect to encounter you here."
The Boss took two more steps forward, and the Nurse, called Acu, slowly turned his head. His expression was blank, his skin swollen, his face much rounder.
Upon seeing the player’s face, Big Fish came over too: "We shouldn’t stay in the corridor, let’s get out of here first."
Big Fish was keen to leave, but the Boss wanted to find the girl who had just laughed; he had a feeling that she was important.
"Acu, did you see the doctors taking a girl past here?" The Boss approached Acu. Seeing that Acu did not reply for a long time, he grabbed Acu’s arm.
The moment he touched Acu, the Nurse’s eyes started to move irregularly, and scraps of untrimmed gauze were faintly visible in his eyeballs.
His lips parted, and Acu tried to speak, but the scars inside his mouth suddenly split open, and it seemed as if his entire face was falling apart.
The Boss and Big Fish were scared senseless at this sight, and they backed away frantically, no longer caring about the fate of that player.
As if deprived of strength, the player named Acu fell to his knees; his body seemed boneless, and exaggerated expressions began to emerge on his face.
Shock, pain, fear, unease—Acu couldn’t control his face. He desperately tried to tell the Boss something, but the more he struggled, the more wounds appeared on his face, until his entire face began to crack.
The lights overhead flickered as the boss heard a door to a hospital room creaking slowly open.
Suppressing his fear, he grabbed Big Fish and hid back in the corridor.
Not far from Acu, a door to another room burst open, and two doctors in blood-colored gowns emerged, pushing a trolley on which a gaunt old lady lay.
"Doctor Uncle, can I cry now? I don’t want to keep smiling. I am so scared."
The childish voice came from the mouth of the old lady as she pitifully grabbed the doctor’s sleeve as if she were a small child.
"Du Shu be good, it will be over soon." The shorter doctor lifted the black cloth from the trolley. They took scissors and cut away the bandages on the old woman’s back, and blood instantly splattered out.
It was only after the blood had drained away that the vague face of a person on the old woman’s back could be seen clearly.
"After consuming so many Personalities, still no fruit has been borne, it seems this child is of no use now." The taller doctor’s voice was ice cold, "Let’s go get a new medicine."
"What about this one?" The shorter doctor stroked the old lady’s head, seeming somewhat reluctant.
"Expired medicine should obviously be thrown away." The taller doctor looked at the shorter one with disgust. He took out a white towel to cover the old lady’s mouth and nose, and then pulled out a syringe: "Help me hold her down."
"Don’t blame me, Du Shu, I don’t want to do this either." the shorter doctor held down the girl who couldn’t cry as the taller doctor prepared to inject her with something.
Just as the needle neared the old lady’s neck, rapid footsteps came from behind the taller doctor. He turned his head and saw a sharp scalpel penetrating his abdomen.
With eyes wide, the doctor looked at the two nurses rushing towards him: "You?"
"Run!" The boss knocked the doctor aside while Big Fish grabbed Acu and flung her onto the trolley, almost crushing the old lady.
The two of them saved the old lady and Acu, grabbed the trolley, and ran desperately towards the other end of the corridor.
The shorter doctor didn’t rush to chase after them. He helped the taller doctor up, and the two of them silently stared at the boss and Big Fish.
The scalpel dropped to the floor, and not a single drop of blood flowed from the taller doctor’s wound.
...
Just as Han Fei, now dressed in a doctor’s uniform, arrived at Building Four, he suddenly noticed all the lights in Building Two were out and something seemed to be running through the corridors connecting the other buildings to Building Two.
"Why are all the mutated monsters running towards Building Two? What happened there?"
The more chaos in the hospital, the better for Han Fei. He didn’t know who had helped him, but he would surely grasp this opportunity.
Picking up his pace, Han Fei stealthily made his way to the corridor connecting Building Four and Building Five. He swiped his doctor’s ID badge and sneaked into Building Five.
Standing in the shadows at the corner of the corridor, Han Fei took out his phone and first dialed Zhang Yu’s number.
After several beeps of the busy signal, the call connected, and Han Fei put the phone to his ear: "I want to do one last thing for Fu Sheng. If I’m not around later, you go and protect him. He can see you, which might be because heaven thinks he’s too pitiful and gave him this compensation—so you should cherish this gift."
Dead silence came from the other end of the phone, with no response.
"In his heart, you are never a horrific ghost but the person he feels closest to and most wants to see." After saying this, Han Fei waited a good while before hanging up the phone.
Pulling out the Rebirth Saber, Han Fei set Zhang Yu’s number to speed dial. Although he had spoken resolutely just now, when a critical moment came, he might still need the help of Fu Sheng’s real mother.
Having made all the preparations, Han Fei brought out the Blood-colored Paperman from his chest and let the Paperman sense the location of the Curse.
"Is Achong still in this building?"
After a moment, the Paperman hopped down from Han Fei’s palm. Those blood-red eyes slowly opened, but it didn’t immediately lead the way. Instead, it glared fiercely at Han Fei.
"What do you mean? Why did you look at me like that?"
The Blood-colored Paperman couldn’t answer; it turned around and staggered towards the second floor.
