Chapter 584: Is this a horror game?
Chapter 584: Chapter 584: Is this a horror game?
"No wonder the paparazzi can never capture any scandalous news about you; turns out you’ve been secretly living it up in the game," the Boss was dragged upstairs by Han Fei, who seemed to completely understand Han Fei’s situation.
"Don’t talk nonsense," Han Fei glared coldly at the Boss. The moment he touched the Boss, he had already seen his character information. All of the Boss’s attributes were mediocre, with only his Luck Value being somewhat decent—a six-point Luck Value meant the Boss was slightly better than the average person.
"Actually, I’ve been wanting to get to know you for a while now. How about we meet in private once we leave the game? You’re this year’s most promising newcomer actor. Would you consider endorsing our company?" The Boss had forgotten many terrifying things, and now he was "carefree," still trying earnestly to expand his "contacts" in the Underworld.
"Let’s talk about living to leave first. You can’t just exit a Hidden Map at will—in short, we’re all stuck here right now," Han Fei recalled the locations of the surveillance cameras in the building, planning to first take the Boss to the Safe House to ask him some sensitive questions.
"Exiting is easy; just die in the game, and that’s it. Other players care a lot about their game accounts, but for me, it doesn’t matter. I’ll just throw more money and get another one," the Boss tidied up his nurse uniform: "All these investments are peanuts to me. I play this game only for the Black Box."
The Boss’s reason for playing the game was different from other players; he believed he was always playing the game and that it was absolutely impossible to be played by the game. That’s the confidence of a big spender.
"I suggest you best abandon the idea of dying. Dying on the Hidden Map can cause irreparable damage to your brain," Han Fei led the Boss into the Safe House and, after closing the door, began to ask in a low voice, "Do you still retain any memories related to this Hidden Map?"
"What memories?" The Boss looked puzzled: "I’ve only been in this Hidden Map for about ten minutes, and you’re the first player I’ve met."
"Ten minutes?"
"Yeah, ten minutes ago I woke up in the nurse’s rest room in Building Number 5. That chubby nurse said she was taking me to meet someone, and then I ran into you," the Boss thought carefully: "Apart from not triggering any mission, there’s nothing strange about it, right?"
"Your memory has returned to the moment when you first entered the Hidden Map," Han Fei stroked his chin, unaware of how the Plastic Surgery Hospital managed to do this, but he was very eager to learn the technique.
If he could also reset the memories of the players, then managing players who run into the Deep World in the future would be much easier.
"I have one more reason why I must inherit this Shrine; whether it’s cosmetic changes to the appearance or reshaping of the soul, I have to find a way to learn it."
Han Fei sat in the Safe House, staring at the Boss, making him feel uncomfortable under his gaze.
"Buddy, if you don’t say that your villain act is really good, just that look in your eyes scares people; it must carry at least five or six different emotions, right?" The Boss had high emotional intelligence and didn’t directly say that Han Fei’s gaze was too frightening.
"Don’t interrupt. The things I’m about to tell you may be hard for you to accept, but they are the truth." Han Fei stood in front of the Boss: "The truth is, you’ve been in this Hidden Map for several days, but you’ve forgotten what you’ve gone through. Your other friends are also in this hospital, and I’m going to take you to see them now."
"I have amnesia in the game?" The Boss was almost amused by Han Fei, and his gaze towards Han Fei also changed, as if he had encountered a strange person.
"You don’t have to believe me, but it would be best if you follow my instructions."
As Han Fei and the Boss were talking, the door to the Safe House was pushed open, and Zhang Zhuangzhuang also walked in with a Newcomer.
"Big Fish?"
"Boss!"
The man following Zhang Zhuangzhuang was also a player, who had originally escorted Shen Luo out with the Boss, and now the two had met again in the Plastic Surgery Hospital.
"You two know each other?" Zhang Zhuangzhuang’s face was stern, and his gaze shifted between Big Fish and the Boss.
"They’ve been good friends for many years," Han Fei stepped in to speak for the Boss. It seemed that both players’ memories had been reset to the moment they entered the Shrine Memory World.
"Alright, then come over together later. Taking good care of our customers will allow you to live a bit longer here," Zhang Zhuangzhuang kindly hinted, but neither the memory-loss-stricken Big Fish nor the Boss took his words to heart.
After a fifteen-minute break, the four nurses came to the floor where Love and Qiangwei’s female assistant were staying.
"Being a nurse is actually quite simple, especially in this hospital," Zhang Zhuangzhuang looked at the two Newcomers: "Whatever the clients ask for, we try our best to fulfill it. Many nurses here want to become a little dog that gets adopted."
"This hospital of yours doesn’t seem very regular, does it?" Big Fish, with a background as a swimmer focusing on Physical Strength, was bulky and healthy, and his nurse uniform couldn’t fully cover his muscles.
"The guy responsible for the Newcomers had an accident, so now it’s my turn. I hope you understand the meaning behind my words and don’t end up like him," Zhang Zhuangzhuang felt like he was making it clear.
The VIP elevator door opened, and the black-clad manager jogged alongside Love: "Would you like to make another selection? It was indeed our oversight previously. Apart from Fu Yi, we will arrange another nurse to accompany you full-time."
"Just these few?" Love’s gaze stayed on Han Fei, completely uninterested in her other nurses: "Let them go; I don’t need anyone else."
Love entered her own room, and those three black boxes had already been delivered by the security guards. She felt as if she saw her own children, her gaze gradually becoming blurred as her fingers caressed the black surface, seemingly unable to wait to try something.
Han Fei had already sensed something was amiss, and he slipped away before Love could look up again.
In the VIP room, Love seemed to have thought of something. She looked outside but couldn’t find Han Fei’s figure. A flash of anger crossed her face as she closed the room door with a "bang".
"What a beautiful NPC." The boss sighed sincerely, "I really want to see the secrets inside her boxes, even if it costs my life, it would be worth it."
"Boss, don’t be impulsive, we have serious matters to attend to."
"It’s just a game account."
"What are you mumbling about?" The black-clad manager’s face darkened as she approached the boss and Big Fish, "Two useless fools, I’m disappointed in you. Is there no one else in building five?"
"This female manager really has character; I like such realistic settings." The boss smiled at the black-clad manager, "The harsher you scold now, the more interesting the contrast will be once you are conquered."
"Did the doctor treat your brain to stupidity?" The black-clad manager cursed under her breath; clear blood vessels were throbbing beneath the skin of her face.
Seeing that the conflict was about to escalate, Han Fei sighed and stepped out from his hiding spot, "Manager, please don’t stoop to their level, Zhang Zhuangzhuang and I will teach them properly."
"At least you understand."
"Love doesn’t need a nurse, but I wonder if the two female VIPs across from us do?" Han Fei wanted to let the boss and Big Fish meet other players; with Qiangwei’s assistant to vouch for them, they should gradually accept the fact of their memory loss.
"One of the VIPs suddenly fainted for some reason; both of them were sent to building two, where specialized doctors are designing customized beauty and body treatments for them."
"Building two?" Han Fei slightly furrowed his brows.
"What’s the matter? Is something bothering you?" The black-clad manager glanced at Han Fei.
"Both of those VIPs had chosen me before, but I really can’t serve them now, and I feel quite uncomfortable about it, so I want to introduce them to a new nurse as soon as possible."
Hearing Han Fei’s explanation, the black-clad manager nodded, "You were born for this job, no wonder you’re so popular with the female clients even though you just started."
After the black-clad manager left, the boss, dressed in a nurse’s uniform, sat directly on the sofa prepared for VIPs, "Since Big Fish and I are here, other players probably aren’t far from this place, most likely inside the hospital. Our top priority is to gather everyone together before we take action."
"Let’s just stay in the hospital. With Qiangwei’s ability, she should be able to find us soon," said Big Fish as he walked over to the boss. They started exchanging ideas while Han Fei and Zhang Zhuangzhuang looked at them as if they were fools.
"Are these two your friends?" Zhang Zhuangzhuang asked quietly.
"These two came from building five. I used to know them, but now I feel like their brains have been messed up by the hospital." Han Fei had seen firsthand the methods of the Plastic Surgery Hospital; as the world’s aberrations became more severe, the hospital’s tactics would only grow more numerous and frightening.
"They’ve already received treatment. It’s probably because the hospital is desperately short-staffed, so they pulled out patients to work as nurses," Zhang Zhuangzhuang spoke gravely to Han Fei, "You must remember, some of the patients are good people, but some are bad. It’s best if we keep tonight’s operation secret from others."
"Understood." Han Fei and Zhang Zhuangzhuang finalized their plan, and then Han Fei went to Big Fish and the boss, delegating some of the physical tasks he was supposed to do to them. In return, he shared with them the things they should be aware of after dark.
Having finished these tasks, Han Fei returned to Fu Yi’s room to spend the last bit of time accompanying his daughter, who lacked love the most.
As the sun gradually sloped westward, the lights in the Plastic Surgery Hospital began to slowly illuminate, and Han Fei was also ready to start the nighttime operation.
"Daddy has to leave work now."
"Could you... not go?" Fu Yi lay on the hospital bed; a doctor had specially come to check her condition in the afternoon.
"I will be back soon," Han Fei reassured Fu Yi, then he returned to the Safe House where Zhang Zhuangzhuang was already waiting for him.
"The hospital at night is completely different from during the day; you can’t be too careful," Zhang Zhuangzhuang said seriously to Han Fei, "I will help you as much as I can, and if you see my sister, I hope you can deliver this letter to her."
Zhang Zhuangzhuang took out a crumpled letter and handed it to Han Fei, "My sister is called Zhang Xi; you’ve seen her photo already."
"Don’t worry, I’ll make sure it gets there," Han Fei said as he tucked away the letter. He changed clothes and then handed the nurse uniform to Zhang Zhuangzhuang.
When it was time to leave work, Han Fei, dressed in a suit, walked toward the hospital exit. All the surveillance cameras caught him on his way.
Just as he was about to leave the hospital, an ambulance suddenly drove in. Medical staff hurried out carrying a student in a school uniform, covered in blood.
Recognizing the familiar school uniform, Han Fei’s pupils instantly shrank, and he rushed over!
"Dad?"
Just as Han Fei was running over, Fu Sheng’s voice came from behind him.
Dumbfounded, Han Fei turned around and saw Teacher Liu and Fu Sheng emerging from the ambulance.
"You, what are you doing here!" Han Fei panicked. Anyone could enter this hospital, but Fu Sheng absolutely should not.
"Fu Sheng found out there was a kid at school who has also been bullied," Teacher Liu said, looking pale. "The kid scratched his own face and was about to jump when Fu Sheng stopped him."
"Fu Sheng, go home! Dad and teacher are at the hospital! Leave this to us," Han Fei was truly anxious now.
Seeing that Han Fei was not quite himself, Teacher Liu quickly tried to comfort Fu Sheng, "The teacher will stay here. Li Yuan will be fine."
With both adults persuading him this way, Fu Sheng’s personality should lead him not to refuse, but this time he didn’t leave. Instead, he stared straight at Han Fei.
Han Fei felt that Fu Sheng might have seen something. He walked up to his son, looking directly at the child from his memory world, "You need to take good care of mom and your brother. I’ll handle the rest. If I can’t bear it anymore, then you’ll be the support for everyone. Go home, don’t let the family worry."
Fu Sheng looked at Han Fei, who was close at hand. He finally nodded his head, didn’t enter the Plastic Surgery Hospital’s Building One, but left.
The medical staff carried the student into the hospital, Teacher Liu followed, and Han Fei stood alone outside.
He waited until the sunset was completely gone before taking out his phone and dialing his wife’s number.
"I have some matters to deal with and might work late into the night. I won’t be home for dinner tonight."
As the last rays of sunlight were swallowed by the horizon, the whole city slipped into darkness.
Han Fei left the hospital and, after a long detour, arrived near the third section of the side fence.
Climbing over the wall, he found a package prepared in advance by Zhang Zhuangzhuang in the bushes. Inside was a set of doctor’s coat, a mask, and a lot of bandages.
After changing clothes, Han Fei recalled a doctor’s demeanor and movements and took out the doctor’s ID badge that Shen Luo had given him.
Originally, Shen Luo and a doctor had escaped from the Plastic Surgery Hospital. He was lucky to come across Han Fei, but that doctor died in a car accident.
When Shen Luo was sent away later, he left the doctor’s ID badge with Han Fei.
"The hospital is more mutated today than it was yesterday."
Standing in the shadows, Han Fei could feel that suffocating oppression.
Recently, he had been going home every night. The feeling of staying in the safe harbor was far removed from how terrifying the nights in the Shrine World were.
He took out the Blood-colored Paperman and, using the Paperman’s sense of his own body fragments, Han Fei quietly made his way deeper into the hospital.
As Han Fei started to move, at the corner of the third-floor corridor of Building One, Zhang Zhuangzhuang was cleaning. His eyes occasionally swept toward the corner where Han Fei was hiding.
"There’s only one chance. If I fail, my memory will disappear, and I will no longer be myself," Han Fei thought as he clenched the mop in his hand, a tear rolling down the corner of his eye, though he could not recall why he was sad.
"Brother Zhuang! The head nurse wants us to go to Building Two to help out. We’ll head there first," Big Fish and Boss said as they placed various cleaning supplies in front of Zhang Zhuangzhuang and then turned to head downstairs.
"It’s already dark, you better not run around." Before Zhang Zhuangzhuang could finish speaking, two players had already entered the VIP elevator.
"Dragging on all day, I can’t even straighten my back, I’ve played so many games, but I’ve never encountered such a disgusting situation." The Boss pounded his lower back, "Those NPCs won’t even talk to us, not a single task has been triggered, what kind of crappy hidden map is this?"
"Hidden maps probably have their own rules; maybe we haven’t met the conditions for triggering a task yet," Big Fish pondered for a while. "We’ve gone through Building One today and haven’t seen any other players, they must have been distributed to the other buildings."
"Let’s find Qiangwei first, he’s an expert on hidden maps, a top-tier Black Box Hunter, he definitely understands this place better than us."
The Boss and Big Fish exited the elevator, crossing the corridor of Building One, they pushed open the safety door to Building Two.
A chill swept over them, Big Fish shuddered, "Is it because Building One had the heating cranked up? Why does Building Two feel so cold?"
"Finding people is what matters now. That idiot Dazhuang will probably realize we were lying soon." The Boss closed the safety door and was about to move forward when the lights in the corridor suddenly flickered, "Is the voltage unstable?"
"Shouldn’t be, do you feel it? It’s gotten a bit darker around here."
"Don’t scare yourself, ’Perfect Life’ doesn’t have those terrifying, bloody scenes," the Boss walked ahead confidently, but after a few steps, he suddenly saw a pile of blood-stained bandages at the door of a ward.
"Boss, didn’t you say there was nothing bloody?"
"Hidden maps can be a little different." The Boss pushed open the door of the ward and peeked inside; the small ward was empty.
The light above flickered again, making the entire corridor seem cold and drear.
"This atmosphere is not quite right," Big Fish parted the bandages on the ground and discovered shallow blood footprints underneath, as if a patient had taken off all their bandages and was walking barefoot, leaning on the wall, moving forward.
Following the footprints, Big Fish arrived at the middle of the corridor, where the shallow bloody footprints suddenly disappeared.
Looking up, Big Fish saw a bulletin board on the wall, filled with doctors’ photos.
"Why would the footprints disappear right here? There’s no door or window nearby, where could that person have gone?"
A somewhat terrifying guess popped into his head, and Big Fish looked at the photos of the doctors.
Each photo was shot very clearly, it almost felt as if the doctors had placed their heads right in front of him.
His gaze slowly moved, and Big Fish suddenly noticed that, on the lowest row of the bulletin board, there was a full-body shot of a doctor.
The doctor was clad in a white coat, standing with their back to the camera, and the photo looked like it was taken many years ago.
"Boss, look at the photo on the bottom," Big Fish hurriedly called the Boss over, pointing at the bulletin board.
"Which photo?" The Boss also came over, having been examining the blood-stained bandages, and looked towards the bulletin board.
"The old one at the bottom! There’s a doctor standing with his back to us!"
"No, there isn’t. Are you having an illusion?" said the Boss with a sense of exasperation.
"How could..." Big Fish looked in the direction his hand was pointing, at the bottom of the bulletin board was an old photo, but there was no one in it.
Taking a light breath of cold air, Big Fish stepped back.
"Can you stop scaring yourself, please?" the Boss had just finished speaking when the lights in the corridor flickered again, but this time, unlike before, a few lights near the end of the corridor went out and never came back on.
"Boss, I’ve got a very bad feeling right now," Big Fish’s attention was completely focused on the bulletin board, looking at the photos of the doctors, it felt like they were all looking back at him.
Slowly retreating, Big Fish leaned against someone’s back, feeling a trace of safety, "Boss, should we head back to Building One first? We can make plans after daylight."
Raising his head, Big Fish looked at the Boss standing in front of him, and that uneasy premonition grew even stronger.
"Something’s not quite right, could it be that ’Perfect Life’ is actually a horror game?"
