Chapter 578: Gathering at the Plastic Surgery Hospital
Chapter 578: Chapter 578: Gathering at the Plastic Surgery Hospital
The ability to touch the depths of a soul was a powerful auxiliary skill that enabled Han Fei to touch souls and feel their emotions and obsessions.
Since acquiring the skill, Han Fei had always used it as part of an attack combination, rarely having the chance to truly use it to feel the fluctuating emotions of a soul.
Cao Lingling, bound to the hospital bed, struggled desperately, having completely lost her reason, like a wild beast caught in a trap.
"Stop moving, I’m trying to help you,"
Han Fei closed his eyes; his fingertips seemed to touch the cool water of a stream, stirring ripples of memory, causing Cao Lingling’s soul to begin trembling softly.
Fear, panic, and unease, Cao Lingling’s soul was covered with cracks, and those wounds left by fear were slowly destroying her body.
"Just fear?"
Upon close feeling, amidst the layers of fear, there emerged a hint of confusion and a longing for beauty.
Opening his eyes, Han Fei savored the sensations that had traveled to his fingertips.
Cao Lingling’s soul resembled a doll that had been slashed open with a knife; the hint of confusion seemed like thread, while the longing for beauty was like fabric adorned with lace.
As she threaded the needle in confusion and patched the longing for beauty all over herself, she would become herself anew. Except, by then, she would no longer be the same person as before.
The original doll was simple and pure, but after being patched with fabric, it looked more like a colorful monster.
"Did the Wish Well in the Mirror God Memory World exploit people’s greed, and this plastic surgery hospital exploits people’s pursuit of beauty? Or, more broadly speaking, their desires?"
Cao Lingling on the bed was still screaming; the noise she made was so loud that after a while, footsteps could be heard outside the ward.
A doctor, his hands wrapped in bandages, rushed into the room with two nurses.
"How are you taking care of the patient!" the doctor scolded Han Fei loudly, "The patient is in such pain, why didn’t you inform me immediately? Why are you just standing there? The nurses these days increasingly don’t make the cut!"
The two nurses held down Cao Lingling, and as she watched the nurses approach, she screamed like a frightened sparrow, nearly tearing her throat.
"The doctor and nurses are in white uniforms, the red ghost tore off its face, the white ghosts are eating people..."
No medical assistance came as imagined; the doctor simply gave Cao Lingling another injection. Once she stopped struggling, he did a routine check of her body to ensure her vital functions were still running normally and then left her alone.
"Doctor, her mind seems to have been traumatized, shouldn’t we provide some psychological counseling?" Han Fei, having gone through a long sickness to becoming a doctor, had self-studied criminal psychology, abnormal psychology, and simple psychotherapy in the past in order to solve cases.
"Am I the doctor, or are you?" the doctor with bandaged hands glared at Han Fei, "A nurse should fulfill their duties. If something really happens to the patient, can you take the responsibility?"
"Next time she wakes up, I will immediately notify you."
"Hiring a bunch of vases for money, does Du Shu really want to turn this place into her toy paradise?" The doctor looked down on the nurses from Building One, ignoring Han Fei, and left with the two nurses.
About fifteen minutes later, Officer Fang Changcheng arrived, tardy. He was holding a mobile phone, apparently having just finished a call.
"Good morning, Officer Fang," Han Fei closed the door to the ward and pulled Fang Changcheng into the corner, "Bro, while you were guarding Cao Lingling here last night, did you see anything strange?"
Upon Han Fei’s inquiry, Fang Changcheng’s face showed a slight change, "I was here all night, the last time I checked my watch was at 00:06. But then I fell asleep, and when I woke up, it was already light outside. I just went to check the surveillance near the hospital wards, and indeed, no one entered the ward last night, but..."
Fang Changcheng stared at the ward’s door for a long while, "The surveillance shows that the door to this ward opened several times on its own last night, as if something was going in and out."
"Have you looked at other surveillance footage?"
"Other surveillance is all normal, nothing special," Fang Changcheng sat down on the chair next to the bed, looking groggy with heavy dark circles under his eyes, clearly not having rested all night.
"Officer Fang, after I left yesterday, Agou came to take over, right? Where is he?"
"Your colleague had an emergency and went to assist in another ward last night; he hasn’t come back yet," Officer Fang took out his phone, "But he left me a phone number, saying if Cao Lingling woke up in the middle of the night, or if there was any anomaly, to just call this number."
Glancing briefly, Han Fei memorized the number and immediately dialed it on his phone.
The phone rang for over ten seconds with no answer, so Han Fei had to hang up.
"Officer Fang, you rest here during the day to catch up on some sleep; you’ll need to rely on you to guard Cao Lingling at night," with master-level acting and the ability to touch the soul’s secrets, Han Fei was adept at reading people. Officer Fang seemed to be a relatively upright policeman and could be trusted.
"I won’t sleep, I’ve rested enough last night," Fang Changcheng forced himself to be alert, settling in the chair at the doorway of the ward.
Han Fei said no more and began cleaning the ward. While tidying up leftovers near the bed, he unexpectedly discovered that a corner of the bedsheet was folded inward, suggesting someone had crawled under the bed the previous night.
Grabbing the bedsheet, Han Fei nonchalantly lifted it, as if carelessly.
Under the bed were a few drops of congealed black blood, from which a faint stench of decay wafted.
"Cao Lingling was bound to the bed, Officer Fang had fallen into a deep sleep, and Agou had left on some business. So who was hiding under the bed last night?" Han Fei pretended to clean up, maintaining the act until nine in the morning.
From Han Fei’s pager, the voice of the chubby Nurse urged him to hurry to the lobby on the first floor.
After greeting Officer Fang, Han Fei rushed downstairs. As he stepped out of the stairwell, there was a subtle change in his eyes.
A woman, nearly 1.8 meters tall and dressed very stylishly, stood in the lobby. The front desk receptionist and the chubby Nurse fawned over her like two eager puppies.
"Love, don’t you think our new Nurse is just perfect for your requirements?" the chubby Nurse enthusiastically recommended Han Fei to the tall woman.
The woman was originally a bit impatient and was about to gesture for the chubby Nurse to leave, but then she saw Han Fei.
Removing her sunglasses, a look of undeniable surprise flashed across the woman’s exquisite face: "Fu Yi?"
The corners of Han Fei’s mouth trembled slightly as he managed a strained smile: "Hello, Love."
"He’ll do!" Love pointed at Han Fei, her expression of surprise quickly shifting to a smile. As for why she smiled, only she knew.
"Okay, will you take the regular physical therapy treatment as before?" the chubby Nurse beamed.
"I’ve just recently finished up all my work and am planning to rest up here, to give my body a thorough treatment," Love replied. She didn’t even glance at the others. Her piercing gaze remained fixed on Han Fei, sharp as a slowly spinning buzzsaw.
"I’ll go and make arrangements for you right away!" The chubby Nurse gave Han Fei a secret thumbs-up to encourage him before turning to leave, when suddenly two women entered the hospital lobby.
The two newcomers were complete opposites in demeanor: one was quiet and reserved, the other was warm and extroverted. There was one thing, however, they seemed to have in common—their presence radiated wealth.
"May I help you with anything?" the receptionist quickly approached them, while the chubby Nurse stopped in her tracks.
"We came here yesterday, and an old person in black told us we needed to be members to enjoy all the services. So we went back to get some money," The talkative woman handed a platinum card to the receptionist: "Have a look, is this petty cash enough to register for your membership?"
The receptionist grabbed the card and dashed to the counter. In no time, a handsome woman in a black suit approached from deeper within the hospital: "Welcome, esteemed guests! Is this your first experience here? Allow me to introduce our services to you. Later, professional Doctors and teachers will also come over."
The strikingly handsome female manager invited the two female customers to the VIP room. Coincidentally enough, the reserved customer seemed to recognize something and suddenly spoke up: "Is that person your employee?"
She pointed towards Han Fei, drawing all eyes upon him in an instant.
"He’s our newly arrived Nurse, named Fu Yi. He has many years of caregiving experience, and he’s particularly good at taking care of people," the female manager pulled Han Fei to her side.
"Include him too," the more withdrawn and taciturn customer said bluntly. This clearly displeased Love by her side.
"First come, first served—he’s already my personal caretaker," Love declared forcefully, not leaving any room for negotiation and showing no intention of letting Han Fei go.
"So you must be one of those seven poor saps?" The customer looked at Love with disdain in her eyes, but she didn’t cause a scene, instead, she followed the manager away.
Watching the two customers leave, Han Fei wanted to stop them but feared raising the hospital’s suspicion.
Both of the new female customers were gamers, and Han Fei recognized the more reticent one; she was Qiangwei’s assistant.
"These two must also be quite wealthy in real life, with a taste for appreciation and a dress style much stronger than the average person. They aren’t pretending to be rich; they are just being themselves." Han Fei actually hoped that the two female gamers would take him with them. Although they looked down on him and considered him a freeloader, they wouldn’t harbor any intent to kill him. Love, on the other hand, was different.
"Your eyes are practically glued to them. Are they that attractive?" Love blocked Han Fei’s view, her daring and avant-garde outfit highlighting her perfect figure spectacularly.
"Don’t misunderstand, I just thought that one of the customers looked like a friend of mine." Han Fei’s smile was somewhat unnatural. Whether it was due to the beginning of world alteration, he could distinctly feel the oppressive atmosphere emanating from Love.
"A friend of yours?" Love stepped closer: "Are they like your boss? Or like your subordinate? Or perhaps like your wife?"
Love was beautiful, but at times her passion could be consuming like a blaze, devouring those engulfed by it together.
Taking a step back, Han Fei hadn’t yet figured out what to reply when suddenly Zhang Zhuangzhuang’s voice came through his walkie-talkie—Is there anyone free in building one? Come to the side door to help! A new patient has arrived!
"Received, received, on my way!"
Han Fei didn’t hesitate, he turned and ran, picking up speed. Love didn’t pursue him; instead, she took out her phone, apparently contacting someone to deliver certain props to the plastic surgery hospital.
Reaching the hospital’s side entrance, Han Fei saw several medical staff members milling around the hospital’s shuttle, with Zhang Zhuangzhuang among them.
"What kind of patient requires so many doctors?"
Han Fei ran to the vehicle and looked inside.
On a reinforced metal stretcher lay a gaunt man, bound hand and foot, his arms covered in self-inflicted wounds, his clothing stained with blood, yet his expression was one of utter bliss.
"Achong?"
