Chapter 549: Everything is Getting Better Slowly?
Chapter 549: Chapter 549: Everything is Getting Better Slowly?
Han Fei stopped in his tracks, looking incredulously at the door beside him, a glimmer of hope flashing through his eyes.
The doorknob turned gently, and Fu Sheng’s bedroom door opened, with light spilling through the crack into the room.
Standing by the door, Han Fei didn’t see Fu Sheng’s face, and the Fu Sheng, who opened the bedroom door, didn’t step out of the room either.
Both father and son were now looking at the opened door, contemplating the change they had never imagined before.
A pair of hands stretched out from within the room, Fu Sheng picked up the meal tray Han Fei had brought, and returned to his bedroom.
The door closed once again, but Han Fei’s eyes were filled with relief. When he first came to this Shrine Memory World, Fu Sheng would react violently whenever he neared the door, refusing to eat anything he made, let alone proactively opening the door to take the food back into the room like he did now.
Downstairs, his wife was also shocked. Fu Sheng, who had always been silent and closed-off, had taken the initiative to open the door, something she had not even dared to dream.
Her gaze slowly shifted back to Han Fei. Rather than saying that Fu Sheng had changed, it was more appropriate to say that Han Fei’s effort had borne fruit.
A smile spread across her face as she approached Han Fei, "Everything is gradually getting better, take it slow."
"Mhm," a mixture of indescribable emotions occupied Han Fei’s mind, and it seemed to be happiness.
"Let’s go eat too," his wife said, supporting Han Fei’s arm as they descended the stairs together.
This dinner was exceptionally cozy, as if they were celebrating some festival.
After a satisfying meal, Han Fei and Fu Tian started playing hide-and-seek at home. Lately, Fu Tian had taken a particular liking to this game, but to his frustration, he was always found by Han Fei, yet every time it was his turn to seek, he could never find Han Fei.
"I’m going to hide now, no peeking," said Han Fei, who possessed a passive hide-and-seek ability. He didn’t make much effort to hide, but simply stayed out of Fu Tian’s line of sight.
The tender voice of a child could be heard in the house as Fu Tian counted numbers with his face buried in the couch. But when he opened his eyes, Han Fei was already out of sight.
"Where did Daddy go?"
He ran around the house but couldn’t find Han Fei, his cute little face puckering up.
Just then, his mother, sitting on the couch, coughed softly and surreptitiously pointed behind her.
With a puzzled look, Fu Tian ran behind the couch, and his chubby little hands wrapped around Han Fei, who was sitting behind the sofa: "Caught you!"
The house was filled with happy laughter. It seemed like Fu Tian had grasped the most important thing in the world, clinging to Han Fei like a koala, refusing to let go.
Watching their playful interaction, his wife briefly forgot all the painful memories. It had been a long time since she had smiled so genuinely from the heart.
"How did you catch me when I was hiding so well? Did Mommy secretly tip you off?"
Han Fei picked up Fu Tian. He could feel that special connection of shared blood. This little life in front of him was his child, a family member he had to protect at all costs.
"Alright, go wash up and get ready to sleep."
As his wife took Fu Tian to the bathroom to wash up, Han Fei sat on the couch and opened the Attribute Panel. Fu Tian’s attitude towards him had changed, and everything seemed to be getting better, but Han Fei felt somewhat uneasy.
He had chosen the path of defying fate, uncertain whether tomorrow or an accident would come first.
Touching the Item Bar, Han Fei now had one opportunity to open the Item Bar. The two most suitable items to bring out were the Rebirth Saber and the Blood-colored Paperman.
"The Blood-colored Paperman is infused with Xu Qin’s blood and shares a special connection with her. If I take it out..." Han Fei stole a glance at his wife in the bathroom. He hadn’t done anything to be ashamed of, but for some reason, he still felt a little guilty: "Forget it, I won’t increase the difficulty of the game for myself."
Han Fei decided to save this opportunity to retrieve an item for a time of crisis.
After his wife put Fu Tian to sleep, she also sat down on the couch and watched TV with Han Fei.
As time ticked by, his wife grew sleepy. Her body began to lean as if she wanted to rest against Han Fei.
Just before their shoulders touched, Han Fei reached out to support her: "Come on, let’s go to bed."
His wife woke up groggily, not saying much, just nodding gently.
Upon entering the bedroom, Han Fei spread the quilt on the floor and skillfully crawled under the covers.
"Maybe you should come up to sleep on the bed; it’s getting colder."
"It’s okay."
Han Fei declined his wife’s kind offer once again, which perhaps also reflected a bit of the household hierarchy; saying he would sleep on the floor meant he would, and no one could change his mind.
After turning off the bedroom light, exhaustion washed over him and his guard against his wife was slowly lowering. Even he hadn’t realized that when he had made up his mind to protect this home, it had unconsciously become his haven.
As the night deepened, Han Fei and his wife were abruptly awakened by a loud noise.
They hurriedly got up and opened the bedroom door.
The sound seemed to come from the bathroom. Han Fei, shielding his wife, turned on the living room light.
The bathroom mirror was shattered, and Fu Sheng stood amidst the scattered pieces, head bowed, with a clock in hand.
Blood dribbled down his fingers onto the hour hand, as if to stain time with blood.
If it had been Fu Yi of the past, he would certainly have thought Fu Sheng was acting up again and would’ve scolded him loudly. But Han Fei, knowing the truth, would never do that.
Han Fei immediately fetched a first aid kit, and without asking why Fu Sheng had smashed the mirror, he first checked the cuts on Fu Sheng’s hand.
Throughout the process of bandaging Fu Sheng’s hand, the boy initially was uneasy, trying to pull away. But after a few unsuccessful attempts, he gave up.
Father and son acted with tacit understanding, neither speaking, just quietly doing the right thing.
"Fu Sheng, did you see something?" his wife came running to ask, and before she could get a response, she heard the cries of Fu Tian coming from the bedroom.
Putting down the broom, the wife hurried to check on Fu Tian’s condition.
Standing at the bathroom door, Han Fei had finished treating Fu Tian’s wound and then picked up the broom and dustpan to start cleaning up the fragments of the mirror on the floor.
Seeing Han Fei busy and silent, Fu Sheng gently touched his bandaged hand and said in a low voice, "There’s a ghost in the mirror, a woman without a face."
"I know."
"Do you believe what I’m saying?"
"I met the old school principal, he told me a lot of things. I misunderstood you before, no, everyone misunderstood you." Han Fei tidied up the things on the floor and tentatively asked, "The sapling the old principal left has been planted where the sun shines, and the girl who has been accompanying you to meals is still waiting for you. If you have time, go see them tomorrow. That school has changed and isn’t the same as before."
Han Fei didn’t force Fu Sheng to go to school, nor did he preach about how studying could change one’s life. He just mentioned things that Fu Sheng used to be familiar with.
For Fu Sheng, the girl and the old principal should be the only people from that academy worth remembering.
"Go back to sleep, I’ll cover all the mirrors at home with black cloth later, and we won’t use mirrors at night anymore." Han Fei was very aware of how much the faceless woman hated him, so he didn’t blame Fu Sheng; in fact, he almost wished Fu Sheng would break a few more mirrors, to keep that faceless woman from going too far.
Fu Sheng seemed still not quite used to talking with his father. He intended to clean up himself, but he couldn’t stretch out both his hands, and his body instinctively didn’t want to get close to his father.
"That faceless ghost will probably come looking for you again." After uttering these last words, Fu Sheng went back upstairs and locked himself in his room again.
"From the moment I made my choice, the world began to mutate, and these ghosts and monsters seem to have become more active." After cleaning the bathroom, Han Fei entered Fu Tian’s bedroom; the child was terrified and wouldn’t stop bawling.
"Fu Tian and Fu Sheng seem to both be able to see ghosts; how did this ability come about? Could it be inherited from Fu Yi? But how come Fu Yi doesn’t have any ability?" Han Fei compared the life paths of the two brothers but still couldn’t figure it out.
Both brothers were big shots that could change the world, yet their father was the worst person in the world.
While his wife was putting Fu Tian to sleep, Han Fei found some black cloth and covered all the mirrors in the house, not even sparing reflective objects like the TV screen and glass coffee table.
"Do you believe what the kids said?" After Fu Tian fell asleep, the wife dared to speak to Han Fei in a whisper, "Should we still take them to see a doctor?"
The wife didn’t believe in the existence of ghosts and monsters. Han Fei, during his time as the Building Chief, had seen Fu Sheng bound to a bed, like a patient deprived of freedom, like a highly aggressive madman.
"Fu Sheng is just starting to get better, what he needs now is not a doctor but someone willing to accompany him." Han Fei looked seriously at his wife, "I know you’ve always treated Fu Sheng as your own child, and you’ve suffered a lot over the years. I’ll try to make up for those mistakes, but..."
The wife seemed to sense an ominous premonition; she grabbed Han Fei’s arm.
"If I go away on a long trip, please remember, you must believe in Fu Sheng. He is the finest person in the world, never treat him as a burden. You might even try relying on him." Han Fei had seen into the future; he knew what kind of people Fu Sheng and Fu Tian would become.
"Alright, I’ll listen to you."
"Go to sleep. Tomorrow, you still have to take Fu Tian to kindergarten."
Han Fei and his wife returned to the bedroom and crawled back under the covers, but they couldn’t fall asleep.
After a hard struggle, Han Fei had just finished washing up when his phone began to ring again.
Glancing at the caller ID, Han Fei’s expression turned somewhat peculiar, the person calling was that player he had encountered yesterday—Wu Shan.
"What’s the matter, Wu Shan?"
"Yesterday, Big Fish and Boss were escorting your brother back when they ran into some unknown accident. We’ve lost contact with the three of them..." Wu Shan felt somewhat guilty; it was he who had invited Shen Luo, and now an accident had occurred before they could even meet.
"They were supposed to have returned by noon yesterday!" Han Fei was also taken aback.
"We’ve been looking all night, but the three of them have vanished, unreachable, and we have no idea where they went," Wu Shan said with a touch of helplessness: "Their van had just left the city when it collided with an ambulance, and Qiangwei suspects their disappearance is related to that ambulance. We’re slowly checking all the hospitals in the city."
"There was a car accident?" Han Fei sat on the sofa, not daring to tell Wu Shan that Shen Luo’s Luck Value was zero, let alone suggest that everything might be related to Shen Luo.
His brain whirred into overdrive as Han Fei logically thought it through.
The van had crashed just after leaving the city; Shen Luo and the two players had disappeared, and now other players were preparing to check all hospitals to find them. If by chance they were to check Perfect Plastic Surgery Hospital, they might all be doomed.
"If I didn’t know Shen Luo inside out, I’d suspect he was the mastermind behind this." Han Fei organized his words: "Last night, I was attacked by some ghost or monster, and this world is becoming more and more dangerous. If you really can’t find Shen Luo, don’t panic. Focus on protecting yourselves first."
"The storm is brewing, and I have a feeling something big is about to happen. Why don’t you join us as well? That way, we can look out for each other," Wu Shan invited Han Fei to join them again.
"I will join, just not right now." After hanging up the phone, Han Fei didn’t know how to contact Shen Luo: "He hasn’t been recaptured by the hospital, has he? Even with a Luck Value of zero, he shouldn’t be that unlucky."
Looking at the map on his phone, the Plastic Surgery Hospital and Paradise stood at opposite ends of the city, seeming to envelop the outskirts in their respective spheres of influence.
"Letting those players scout ahead could work. I’ll just stay in the city center and not go anywhere. Once I’ve eliminated everyone’s hatred, even if the world changes, I’ll have enough helpers by my side."
Realizing this, Han Fei sighed. In theory, he could get everyone’s help, but that was predicated on him living long enough.
Based on the current situation, the best scenario would be to stay by his wife’s side forever. The second best would be to be imprisoned in the basement by Li Guo’er, becoming her personal toy.
"After this mission, I reckon I’ll never date again in my life."
After breakfast, Han Fei was about to pick up his bag and go to work when he suddenly heard the door on the second floor open.
Looking up at the second floor with some surprise, Han Fei saw Fu Sheng dressed in a brand-new school uniform, carrying his backpack as he emerged from the bedroom.
The sunlight shone through the window into the house, and Fu Sheng raised his hand to shield his forehead.
Since he had taken leave from school, he always went out at night, and during the day he would draw thick curtains in the house. It had been a long time since he bathed in the sunlight.
All three family members looked toward Fu Sheng, each one more surprised than the last.
Putting on a hat, Fu Sheng didn’t linger and, carrying his backpack, walked out of the house.
