Chapter 470: Chapter 470: So He Is the Truth (4000 Votes for Monthly Ticket)
A van drove through the pouring rain, with Han Fei’s acquaintance, a male waiter, sitting at the driver’s seat. He was driving attentively, glancing at Han Fei occasionally through the rear-view mirror.
Having been around the block for more than a decade, the waiter had seen all sorts of people, but he had never encountered someone as unique as Han Fei.
When in uniform, he appeared knowledgeable and refined; but in Brother Snake’s coat, he turned venomous and ruthless, especially with those Ghost Patterns on him that suffocated just by being looked at.
"Just focus on driving."
With his fingers tapping the window frame, Han Fei was resting with his eyes closed.
"Yes, yes." The waiter momentarily averted his gaze but inevitably kept peeking at the rear-view mirror.
There were several toughs in the van, all formidable figures of their own right, constantly brawling. No one submitted to another, but since Han Fei got on board, everyone behaved unusually well, almost like a corporate team-building event to the uninformed.
The atmosphere inside the van was tense, nobody daring to speak. Han Fei, however, seemed to relish this ambience. If everyone was socially anxious, not bothering each other, it felt rather comfortable.
Half an hour later, the van arrived at Shahe Origin. They turned off the interior lights and slowly approached the residential area.
Shahe Origin at night no longer seemed clean and tidy. Instead, everywhere there exuded an eerie vibe. Rather than a neighborhood for the Rich People, it was more akin to a vast graveyard.
"Do you need us to join you?"
"No need."
The waiter was eager, but Han Fei straightforwardly rejected him, "Stay here and be ready to assist me. Don’t stray too far from the elder, and don’t leave the vehicle randomly."
Wearing a Black Rain coat, Han Fei entered Shahe Origin with a bundle in hand.
The gate, guarded during the day, appeared pitch black at night, devoid of life.
As he walked forward, Han Fei found blood-red pupils hiding within every surveillance camera nearby, watching his every movement.
"Designed quite humanely."
Thanks to his exceptional memory, Han Fei had memorized the placement of all the cameras. Coupled with a helping hand from the storm, he easily snuck into the community.
"All buildings seemed alive, the underground water veins their blood vessels, interconnecting them into a single entity."
Upon entering Shahe Origin, strange noises emerged from Han Fei’s Wish Jar, as the Wronged Dead lowly roared, seemingly unable to contain their Grudge Energy any longer.
"Just hold on a bit longer. Soon, I’ll let you unleash all your grudge."
The Department Store Boss was still respected as a philanthropist and entrepreneur, protected by his Shrine—the Unbreakable Golden Body. But it wouldn’t be long before everyone in Shahe saw the true nature of the Department Store Boss.
Soon, it would be time for the Department Store Boss to pay his debts.
Reaching section nine, Han Fei had barely passed when the corridor door opened on its own, as if it had been awaiting him.
Entering the corridor, a pale-faced elderly man crouched on the gloomy stairs looked somewhat scary.
"Grandpa, I’ve found what you wanted," said Han Fei, who felt not fear but a hint of pride.
He took out a cloth bag from beneath his raincoat and found a family photo for the old man.
Surprised, the old man asked, "One can only retrieve such a photo by entering the Well, which is filled with countless hatreds and grievances. Touching the water will drag you in; how did you manage it?"
"It was indeed very dangerous," a vision of the Chef flashed through Han Fei’s mind, "I guess I had the help of a nobleman."
"Nobleman’s help?" The old man nodded thoughtfully. "I thought you were just looking for an excuse to escape. I didn’t expect you to actually bring the photo back."
"I always fulfill my promises," Han Fei handed over the family photo, but the old man did not reach out to take it.
"This photo is incredibly important for my whole family. I will gratefully thank you." The old man signaled for Han Fei to follow him, and they entered room nineteen together.
Noises of cooking and bustling kitchen filled the house, sounding lively, but upon entering, the view was a cold, decrepit living room with a table of rotten, stinking meals.
The old man led Han Fei to the bedroom where they stood beside the bed, facing seven black-and-white memorial portraits.
As Han Fei entered the room, the figures within the memorial portraits turned their eyes silently staring at Han Fei.
Well past two in the morning, Han Fei stood in front of a row of memorial portraits alongside a ghost, the scene surprisingly harmonious. His presence didn’t seem out of place; it was as if he perfectly blended in.
"Hold the edge of the memorial portrait, and let’s place it together on the altar table." Perhaps worried about frightening Han Fei, the old man gave him an encouraging look with his whitened eyes.
"Okay." He did as instructed, and as Han Fei placed the photo on the altar, all the memorial portraits began to fade, and dense Grudge Energy surged from every corner of the room.
The sounds of screaming, bones breaking, and blood dripping all resounded in Han Fei’s ears; it was as if he was reliving the despair of the deceased in their fatal accidents once again.
Dizzy and unable to control his body, even so, he still worried about his family members sitting in the car.
The concern and attachment connected all the memorial portraits, and slowly, arms extended from within, all reaching for the family photo that Han Fei had brought.
The continuous agonizing screams indicated that the people in the portraits were enduring unimaginable pain to emerge from within.
Their bodies were torn apart repeatedly, yet none let go of the photo.
"A family should of course stay together, that’s our final wish."
The old man also touched the family photo, and they, along with the accumulated Dark Energy of the room, entered the photo together.
No more figures remained in the seven memorial portraits on the altar table, the old man next to Han Fei had also vanished, and the room’s temperature slowly returned to normal; everything seemed to revert to how it was.
Looking down at the family photo, the people in the picture were smiling very happily, as if they were also greeting Han Fei.
"Now I should be able to take them out of this room."
Packing away the family photo, Han Fei prepared to look for Boss Gu’s brother, but upon entering the room, he realized something was amiss—as if all the pictures had been destroyed, and the brother’s bedroom had been emptied.
"You were late. Last night, as the sun set, that demon named Boss Gu paid a visit,"
the old man’s voice suddenly appeared, startling Han Fei; he almost drew the Rebirth Saber directly, "Sir, next time you emerge from the family portrait, please give me a heads-up. I’m afraid I might accidentally hurt you."
Nodding slightly, the old man continued, "Boss Gu’s brother knew too many secrets. He must crush his bones into dust and scatter his soul to rest peacefully. It seems he must have encountered some trouble recently, worried about exposing his affairs, hence he acted that way. But you shouldn’t sympathize with his brother, a demon’s brother won’t be a good person either."
Having an elder in the house is like having a treasure, the old man’s thoughts were clear, and most importantly, he knew Boss Gu very well, as the two were once best friends.
"So, what do we do next?"
"We’ll go to his house to have a look, I’ll lead the way for you." The old man’s family had gained freedom, and he was in a great mood now. If it wasn’t for Han Fei being alive, he almost wanted to consider Han Fei as one of his own family members.
Torrential rain poured, and lightning flashed across the sky, with Han Fei wearing a raincoat, advancing through the night, flanked by buildings that were slowly mutating.
Under the protection of the old man’s family, no Ghost and Monster came to trouble Han Fei. They moved smoothly from District Nine to District One.
Despite the heavy rain tonight, there were Security Guards patrolling in District One, possibly because of the tense situation, there were two teams of Security Guards just near Boss Gu’s residential area alone.
"There are many more Security Guards than usual, but what’s the use?" Han Fei donned the Beast-faced Mask, and as he prepared to charge in, the old man stopped him.
"Don’t be impulsive, did you notice that your boss’s residence resembles an enlarged shrine?" the old man held back Han Fei.
"A shrine?"
"Yes, the Security Guards are just for show to outsiders. To enter your boss’s room, you must destroy the shrine. The entire Shahe Origin residential area he built mimics the well and the shrine, with the artificial lake in the center of Shahe Origin representing the well, all Rich People’s buildings representing rows of shelves, and the dominant Building One in District One symbolizing the shrine," the old man, who had lived in Shahe Origin for a long time, was aware of the dirty deeds Boss Gu did behind the scenes.
"What a grand scheme that guy has!"
"Human greed is limitless; exchanging Luck and money is no longer enough for him, he wants to become a Divine Spirit himself," the old man’s eyes, filled with white, stared at the distant residence: "Now there are two methods to enter his room; the first is to destroy the Shrine itself, the second is to undermine the terrain here; we..."
"Let’s jump in from the rooftop." Han Fei interrupted before the old man could finish, "I smashed through the top of the shrine in the Department Store; there should be a loophole at the top of the building."
The old man was taken aback for a moment, unable to comprehend that the shrine symbolizing the Divine Spirit had its top blown off.
"Are you sure?"
"With one hammer stroke, it will break through."
Han Fei and the old man quietly approached the building. After taking down two Security Guards, Han Fei climbed up to the balcony of Boss Gu’s detached villa using the surveillance.
"Living so lavishly, he has everything yet has lost everything at the same time."
Without any hindrance, Han Fei pried open the window and entered the house, taking in the luxurious decorations and feeling quite emotional.
"Such a large room, with just him alone, doesn’t he feel lonely?"
Following the clues given by the woman in Room Thirteen, Han Fei went downward, but there was nothing wrong with the entire room.
"Shouldn’t be, right?" When he reached the first floor, Han Fei carefully avoided the surveillance in the house as he searched around, "There are two shrines in the Secondhand Store, the real one is underground, while the one on the ground is built by the department store boss himself. Could it be the same logic with this house? The ground level is just a disguise, and the real living space is underground."
Han Fei was very good at guessing the boss’s thoughts, although others guessed the boss’s thoughts for promotions and raises, he wanted to send the boss to the Underworld for transformation.
After a long search, with the help of the old man, Han Fei finally found the secret passage that led underground.
Lifting the carpet, and opening the cover, the familiar escalator appeared before him, it made Han Fei feel like he was back in the underground storeroom.
"Such a strange smell."
Han Fei took out his phone for light, and the instant he turned it on, he saw a pair of eyes flickering in the darkness.
"Old man, did you see clearly what that was?" Han Fei asked softly, but after a long time without a response, he turned his head only to find that the old man had disappeared without a trace.
He mustered his courage and looked around, the entire underground was set up like a small Paradise, filled with many children’s toys, and there were lots of unfinished snacks on the floor.
"Why would Boss Gu build a children’s Paradise underground? Someone twisted like him shouldn’t like these things."
Moving forward, the strange smell in the air became stronger, and Han Fei slowly started to hear bizarre sounds, like someone eating.
The sound of teeth continuously chewing became clearer, and after Han Fei walked past a row of arcade machines, he found a large, writhing, dark form in the corner; the stinging odd smell was emanating from it.
"What on earth is this?"
Picking up his phone and aiming it at the corner, under the cold light, Han Fei saw a swollen Monster lying on the ground like mud.
Its limbs were locked with chains to the walls, surrounded by various snacks and meats, and it was sticking in that corner, continuously eating the food.
Moving closer, the Monster, engrossed in eating meat, heard the footsteps and struggled to raise its head.
When Han Fei saw the creature’s face, a glint of surprise flashed in his eyes—the Monster had the same face as Boss Gu!
"Don’t kill him, this Monster is called Conscience, and it is Boss Gu’s Conscience," the old man appeared again, holding back Han Fei’s knife-holding hand.
"I didn’t plan to kill him, just holding the knife out of habit," Han Fei circled the Monster, "People used to say bad guys have their conscience eaten by dogs, but Boss Gu’s conscience, I guess even dogs wouldn’t touch, too filthy."
"Dirty as it is, we still need to take him with us." The old man tried to touch the chains, but even the ordinary-looking chains contained the shrine’s Power and almost injured the old man.
"Let me do it." Taking out the Rebirth Saber, Han Fei cut the chains, then dragged Boss Gu’s Conscience to one side with one hand: "How are we going to take this thing away?"
"Don’t rush, this underground Paradise wasn’t built for the Conscience, there must be another Monster hidden here," the old man and Han Fei searched the room for a long time, eventually finding a loose floor tile.
They lifted the tile and, in the deeply dark, enclosed space, found a child who was deaf, blind, noseless, and only had a mouth on his face.
The child was skinny as a rail, curled up in the darkness, unresponsive to everything in the outside world.
"Found it." The old man let out a long sigh of relief, "This child is the Truth, he was once Boss Gu’s own flesh and blood."
