Chapter 471: Chapter 471: Silent Evidence (Vote for 4000 Monthly Tickets)
"Boss Gu has a child?" Han Fei looked toward the depths of the dark room, "With his personality, you’d think he’d have pushed his own child into the well."
"The boy is already dead, he is now in the same state as me, neither human nor ghost, lingering in the world, bearing the curse brought by the shrine." The old man felt sympathy for the boy in the dark room, "This detached villa is the equivalent of a shrine, its existence meant to suppress the boy, sealing all the truths here."
The old man coughed softly a few times, his body gradually becoming ethereal, "I cannot stay here long, you should quickly bring out the truth and conscience."
"How do I bring it out?"
"How did you enter the well and take out the photos? Just bring out the truth in the same way. To obtain the truth, you must embrace it yourself." The detached villa of Boss Gu appeared to be protected by the power conferred by the shrine, as the old man’s body began to slowly fall apart.
"Understood." Han Fei looked down at the dark chamber under the floor, he took out a chain coated with animal fur from his item bar, and placed a blood-colored Paperman next to the chain.
"You’re carrying a chain with you? Where did you get that from?" The old man was astonished.
Han Fei ignored him, letting the Paperman grab one end of the chain, while he jumped into the dark chamber.
This small room was plastered with photographs, some of adults and some of children, all forced to smile as if doing so would earn them some sort of reward.
"Has the boy been trapped in this place all along?"
Han Fei walked to the boy’s side. The latter still had no reaction; he could not hear, see, or smell anything. To him, it seemed the world was just a little black box.
"Hurry up! Don’t just stand there!" The old man urged from above.
Moving his feet, Han Fei used the secret of touching the depths of the soul, gently cradling the boy’s arms.
"No emotions?"
The secret of touching the depths of the soul allowed one to feel the other’s deepest obsession and most intense emotions, but what Han Fei felt on the boy was just nothingness.
He was like a lifeless puppet, letting Han Fei manipulate him, neither struggling nor resisting.
"Does the boy mistake me for Boss Gu?"
Han Fei picked up the boy, looking at his face.
Without eyes, ears, or a nose, all he had was a mouth. Often, that is how the truth is, maybe he could shout loudly, but he would never know what lies around him. Perhaps Boss Gu was watching him close by, or maybe only cold walls surrounded him.
The truth is lonely, trapped in the narrow dark chamber, only those who dare to smash the shrine and are not afraid of authority can see it.
"How can we make the truth speak?"
Han Fei didn’t know how much abuse the truth had endured; the boy might no longer dare to speak.
"First, take him out."
Picking up the boy, Han Fei found a red sweater underneath him, which was a real, tangible object.
"Did he wear the sweater Granny knitted?"
This minor detail caught Han Fei’s attention, he had also found a red sweater in room number thirteen at the apartment building. The woman who had hanged herself in that room and her child had once received help from Boss Gu, and later, they had gone to the city together. Then, afterwards, the woman’s child disappeared at a mall.
A red sweater linked many events, Han Fei now suspected that the boy called Truth had some connection to the hanged woman.
Taking Truth out of the dark chamber, Han Fei approached the conscience that resembled muddy slush, the monster with a face like Boss Gu. Upon seeing the truth, it was so frightened that it immediately retreated, curling up in the corner, not even daring to breathe.
"With the truth and conscience, Boss Gu is done for this time; even the shrine won’t protect him," the old man clenched his teeth, his deep-seated hatred for Boss Gu finally nearing settlement.
Pulling out the Wish Jar, Han Fei placed both conscience and truth inside, and then he and the old man quickly escaped.
On the surface, nothing seemed to have changed in the neighborhood, but as Han Fei was climbing out of the villa’s window, a peal of thunder sounded in the sky, and a large dark shadow appeared in the artificial lake nearby.
"The truth has been exposed, Boss Gu will soon be back. It would be best not to meet him before we let the truth speak," the old man kept advising Han Fei, evidently eager for Boss Gu’s death.
Having successfully escaped from Shahe Origin, the raincoat-clad Han Fei re-entered the van.
"Back so soon? Did you get the evidence?"
"Drive, go to where I’m renting."
After telling his subordinates the address, Han Fei invited Granny to sit next to him, "Granny, do you remember when you knitted this red sweater?"
The old woman’s rough hands touched the sweater, then she did something strange, stretching out her hands as if she was holding a child.
"It’s getting cold, need to dress warmly."
She began talking to herself, and the others in the vehicle thought she was being senile, only Han Fei found it odd.
He took out the Wish Jar and let Truth out, placing him in the old woman’s embrace.
Truth, who had no reaction to external stimuli, moved his lips slightly upon reaching Granny’s side, as if trying to say something.
"Useful? He doesn’t feel uncomfortable in Granny’s embrace?"
Han Fei didn’t force Truth. The old woman, as if cradling her grandson, softly hummed a lullaby to soothe the child to sleep.
"Drive slowly, let Truth have a good sleep," Han Fei said, looking at the Truth in Granny’s arms, while the subordinates in the van looked at each other, perplexed. They didn’t know who Truth was but didn’t dare to ask.
Throughout the journey, the van traveled through the night in silence, eventually stopping at an open space outside an apartment building.
"Get out." Han Fei motioned with his hand, letting Brother Snake’s men go out and hold the umbrellas first before helping Granny out of the van.
Truth still lay in Granny’s embrace, enjoying a moment of tranquility.
The brothers held umbrellas on both sides of the road, protecting Granny as Han Fei walked towards the apartment, and as they just approached the building, the docile Truth had his first reaction, trembling uncontrollably in a very frightening manner.
"Don’t cry, don’t cry, Granny will knit you a sweater," Granny was a bit anxious, trying to comfort Truth, but to no avail.
"Granny, come with me," Han Fei felt certain that Truth had a link to the woman in room number thirteen and quickened his pace.
A group of underlings, unclear of the reason, could only follow Han Fei, rushing into the stairwell.
"We’re here, this is the room!"
Kicking the door open, Han Fei and the elder entered the room.
The temperature began to drop, and something in the uninhabited room seemed to be slowly awakening.
Han Fei led the elder to the bathroom, where he placed the truth atop a pile of waste paper covered in strange symbols.
One by one, the balls of waste paper slid to the floor, the symbols on them converging towards the truth.
The paper balls rolled aside like grains of sand, and a pair of charred hands reached out from the pile, embracing the truth from behind.
The strange symbols on the waste paper gradually disappeared, and a woman with clear tear streaks on her neck appeared.
She said nothing, just held the truth tightly, as if letting go would cause him to vanish.
Her eyes, now devoid of tears and filled with whites, had blood mingled with hatred flowing from them, dropping onto the truth’s face.
Lying in the woman’s embrace, the truth slowly lifted his head, his mouth opening slowly to say, "Mom, don’t cry."
The truth, with only a mouth, felt the presence of his mother and spoke those words quite decisively.
The hanged woman held on to the truth, refusing to let go. In his mother’s embrace, the truth also finally found the will to speak.
"Mom, I’ve seen dad, and I’ve met many brothers and sisters. They’re all dad’s children, and they all live inside me."
The child’s naive voice filled the room. The hanged woman seemed to know that no matter what the truth said, he couldn’t hear her, so she just held him even tighter.
"Many of the brothers and sisters’ fates are like ours. Dad met their moms while doing ’charity,’ then obtained what he wanted at the lowest cost. Some brothers and sisters left before they were even born; they are envious of me, having once seen the world."
The truth spoke without any emotion, without joy or sorrow. He couldn’t hear others’ responses and could only keep talking about himself.
"Mom, can you take me to the park by Shahe? My brothers and sisters always wanted to go there; they say their bodies and dad’s secrets are buried there."
Hearing this, Han Fei immediately came over. He had to interrupt the reunion of mother and son.
"The tragedy on your child is recurring on others. To stop this, we must ensure the boss can never recover. I need the truth’s help."
Han Fei could understand the woman. Her child had become a monster with nothing but a mouth, and his body was filled with countless resentful spirits. She must be tormented inside, but now was not the time to grieve.
"Let the truth speak, let’s look for Boss Gu’s incriminating evidence." To get the boss locked up, Han Fei was prepared to go all out.
Pulling out the Wish Jar, Han Fei looked earnestly at the hanged woman: "Now the night is thick, and it’s a good time for us to act."
From the first time Han Fei appeared in the apartment building, he caught the attention of the hanged woman. She had several opportunities to kill Han Fei, but for various reasons, she had willingly given up each time.
Cause and effect come full circle, and it was her repeated trust that led to their current reunion.
After hesitating for a moment, the hanging woman embraced the truth and entered the Wish Jar.
The Wish Jar, originally just a Grade G Curse Item, now emitted an aura that was even more terrifying than the Grade F Curse Item, the Paperman. If this continued, it was quite possible that the Wish Jar would replace the Wish Well and become the most supernatural thing in this Memory World.
Seeing the woman enter the Wish Jar, Han Fei breathed a sigh of relief, and he immediately helped the elderly person and started walking outside, "Quick! We need to go to the park next to Shahe!"
The group hurried towards the stairs, and as they reached the corner between the second and third floors, the door of a rental room suddenly opened, and a man in slippers came out cursing under his breath.
"Can’t people sleep? Making a racket in the hallways late at night, you motherf..." The man’s eyes gradually focused as he made out the figures in the corridor, noting they were gang members in black clothing. He took a deep breath and slapped himself hard, "Why am I sleepwalking again? Why don’t I have my glasses on? With my 2500-degree myopia, I can’t see anything without my glasses."
As he spoke, he walked back towards his apartment.
Just as he was about to close the door, Han Fei grabbed his shoulder.
"Wait, wait, wait! Let’s talk this out," the man said, shrinking back beside his shoe cabinet.
"Don’t be nervous, I just wanted to tell you," Han Fei pointed to the top of the man’s head, "the hair dye you used is fading and turning a bit green."
"I’ll dye it back to black tomorrow, rest assured!"
"Whatever," Han Fei lowered the brim of his raincoat and without wasting any more time, returned to the van with Brother Snake’s subordinates.
As long as he could get the evidence, this would be the first time he took the initiative in the Memory World.
Han Fei had been to the park beside Shahe many times, but he never ventured deep into it because it gave off a very unpleasant vibe.
"Even though it’s just an abandoned little park, the grudge energy is so intense, I knew there was a problem," he thought.
Braving the torrential rain, Han Fei and his group entered the park and, guided by the truth, arrived at the artificial forest in the deepest part of the park.
"Han Fei, are you sure the evidence of Boss Gu’s crimes is here?" the male waiter was very scared of Han Fei, but he couldn’t help asking at this moment. From his perspective, Han Fei’s actions tonight seemed like he was just running around with an old lady and then suddenly ended up in this wasteland.
"Let’s start digging together. We must find the objects before dawn," Han Fei said, looking at the swings that continued to sway slowly in the rain. He was the first to take action, beginning to dig below.
If Han Fei hadn’t previously intimidated Brother Snake’s underlings, these thugs would’ve probably run away by now as their willingness to follow Han Fei was just to save Brother Snake, not to dig holes here.
About half an hour later, many puppets appeared in the deep pit, each with its own name written on it.
Beyond these objects, Han Fei also found a well-sealed box containing accounts of Boss Gu collecting money and embezzling charity funds under the guise of charity work.
These were left by Boss Gu’s brother who, wanting to secure an escape route for himself, had copied some shady dealings, but unfortunately, he didn’t escape the poisonous hand of his own brother.
"Bullying merchants in cahoots with gangs during construction, causing fatalities in privately-built hospitals, using charity as a front for money laundering, and even taking the opportunity to become involved with several young beneficiaries. This guy has truly done every despicable deed to the extreme," Han Fei thought.
Aside from having an exceptional talent for wrongdoing, Boss Gu had no real skills. The fact that such a person could keep succeeding was entirely due to the power of the Shrine and the Well.
"Even a god in the Shrine protects such a scumbag, showing no distinction between right and wrong. It seems there really is no need for its existence," Han Fei mused.
Having obtained irrefutable evidence, Han Fei now held the key to altering the fates of everyone in the Memory World.
