Chapter 418: Aren’t You Afraid?
Chapter 418: Chapter 418: Aren’t You Afraid?
Looking at the tactical pen Han Fei pulled out from his suit pocket, along with his professional posture, Bai Xian’s eyes almost popped out of his head.
Why would an actor need to carry this thing with him while attending an event? And his posture was too professional!
"Don’t stray too far from me," Han Fei said cautiously while keeping an eye on the front, not forgetting to protect Bai Xian behind him. He always looked after his teammates, a good habit cultivated in the Deep World.
"Okay, okay," Bai Xian nodded repeatedly. He had always thought Han Fei was a very outstanding young man, but only today did he see another side of the "Xinhu Crime Nemesis," far beyond what could be simply described with the word "outstanding."
Grabbing the door, Han Fei didn’t go straight in but instead bent down to look carefully at the ground.
The room was covered in dust, and he could vaguely make out a man’s footprint.
"He went to the second floor," Han Fei moved step by step, but after a few steps, he noticed something wrong. The dusty floor tiles started showing more and more different footprints, all of which were left by children’s shoes, not the man’s.
Not to scare Bai Xian, Han Fei didn’t tell him about it and just gestured for him to stay close to the wall and not too close to the stair railing.
In such old buildings, railings might not be sturdy, inherently posing a danger, and more importantly, if something suddenly attacked, walking next to the railing made it easy to be pushed down the stairs.
With the experience Han Fei had accumulated in the Deep World, he knew all kinds of hiding methods and hunting routines of murderers and was now very selflessly sharing this knowledge with Bai Xian. This information, hard for ordinary people to summarize, was invaluable, and Bai Xian was almost moved to tears upon hearing it.
"Or... should I just wait for you in the car?"
Life always presents countless choices, and right then, Bai Xian was hesitating between facing a ghost and facing a murderer.
"Can you go back alone?" Han Fei had already walked onto the stairs; he smelled a faint odor of decay in the air, a scent he found very familiar.
"Then never mind," Bai Xian honestly followed Han Fei, his body almost sticking to the wall.
"Do you smell something rotten, like something decaying and spoiling? I’ve smelled this strange odor before on Xia Yilan," Han Fei said while leading Bai Xian, ready to head upstairs, when suddenly a beam of light swept across the open door outside.
Han Fei reacted very quickly, pressed down on Bai Xian, and decisively crouched.
He and Bai Xian were hiding on the stairs, strategically watching the doorway from the blind spot in their line of sight.
A light swept across, and a man in a worn Security Guard uniform holding a police flashlight was standing in front of the door.
He first swept the room with his flashlight, then as if to embolden himself, he shouted a few times into the empty room.
"Is anyone in there?!"
"I’m telling you! You can’t just come in here like that!"
Seeing no one replied, the Security Guard moved his feet with difficulty: "Don’t hide! I’ve seen you! If you don’t come out now, I’ll call for people!"
The room was completely silent, the Security Guard’s chest heaved, his forehead sweat, his hand holding the flashlight trembled slightly.
"If you think it’s inconvenient for me to be here, I can leave first, I’ll give you ten minutes to retreat."
The Security Guard spoke without any authority, terrified himself; he took a step into the room then retreated half a step, hesitantly, making Han Fei quite anxious.
Just as Han Fei was about to go upstairs regardless, Bai Xian’s phone suddenly rang, its melodious ringtone sounding extraordinarily eerie in the dead silence of the plastic surgery hospital.
"Snap!"
Bai Xian fumbled hurriedly to turn off his phone, while the security guard, also startled, failed to hold his flashlight steady and dropped it on the ground.
"When are you two coming back? I’ve been on stage twice already." Bai Xian mistakenly pressed the wrong button and the video call went through, Director Zhang’s voice emanated from the phone.
Before Director Zhang could finish speaking, Bai Xian hung up the phone, but by then the security guard had already spotted their hiding spot.
"Come out! Who’s there!"
The flashlight rolled far away on the ground; the security guard didn’t even dare to pick it up, only managing to vaguely see two shadowy figures resembling humans.
"Many people have died in this plastic surgery hospital, and it becomes haunted at night; don’t say I didn’t warn you! Come out on your own now!"
Clutching the Jade Pendant hanging around his neck, the security guard mustered all his courage and moved three steps forward.
Staring at the two shadows, he eventually did not continue moving forward: "Not coming out, huh? Well then, I can call the police!"
Not bothering to pick up the flashlight, he turned and ran outside, not even closing the door behind him.
Hearing that the security guard wanted to call the police, Bai Xian could not stay put; after all, he was a well-known actor, and being caught by the police in an abandoned plastic surgery hospital late at night would definitely lead to trending news.
"Don’t go out, that person won’t call the police, and he isn’t really a security guard," Han Fei grabbed Bai Xian’s wrist.
"How do you know?"
"Security uniforms typically have both Chinese and English identifiers on the arm patches, the left side chest badge has the name and number of the Security Company, including specific anti-forgery designs, but the dark uniform he was wearing clearly lacked all these elements. And notice his hat, it totally doesn’t match the uniform, it must be a pieced-together outfit." Hans Fei was very knowledgeable about security uniforms, and he understood every detail concerning them.
"You know about this stuff?" Bai Xian was filled with surprise.
"I’ve worked as a night-shift security guard." Han Fei didn’t linger, immediately heading upstairs: "That guy’s voice was quite loud; whether or not he intended it, people inside must have become alert. We must speed up our movement."
Following the stairs up to the second floor, the footprints of small children became more numerous, mixing with those of men and becoming less distinct.
"It doesn’t look very big from the outside, but the interior space..." Bai Xian was speaking when he suddenly yelled, touching his own neck, as if something had just fallen into his collar.
"What happened?"
"Might be an insect?" Bai Xian wasn’t too sure, continuously shaking his clothes.
"Be careful." Han Fei held a tactical pen and looked around the corridor, which was decorated very lavishly, hardly resembling a plastic surgery hospital, and more like a private estate integrating convalescence, healing, and leisure.
Walking slowly forward, the door on the left side of the corridor was labeled Eternal Youth, and the door on the right bore the inscription Eternal Thoughts.
Han Fei tried to open the door, but all the doors were locked.
For now, the priority was to find that man, so Han Fei chose not to break the doors open; he and Bai Xian continued along the corridor until they stopped at the first intersection.
"Why aren’t you moving?" Bai Xian looked at the empty, pitch-black corridor, increasingly worried that a murderer might suddenly rush out from behind a door. The more he thought about it, the more frightened he became, and the more wildly his thoughts raced.
"I’m not sure where that guy went."
"You don’t know? Then how were you sure he ran up to the second floor before?" Bai Xian, hunching his neck, couldn’t understand what Han Fei was thinking.
"His shoe prints disappeared here."
"Shoe prints?" Bai Xian instinctively looked down and, with the help of the bright light from his phone screen, he saw numerous children’s shoe prints densely covering the floor!
"Damn it!"
Bai Xian’s face turned pale, his body completely stiffened, and he couldn’t move a step.
"This place is really haunted!" Bai Xian’s eyes filled with the sight of those shoe and footprints. An uncontrollable image appeared in his mind: countless children, whose faces were disfigured and skin-transplanted, running up and down the corridor, all eventually staring at him, standing at the crossroads of the hallway.
"Bang!"
Suddenly, a window they had just passed was shattered. The noise gave Bai Xian, who was already frightened, another scare.
Turning his head, he saw only the shattered glass on the corridor floor.
"Han Fei, let’s leave this place, it’s really not good, it’s really not good!" Bai Xian couldn’t even go back alone now; he couldn’t imagine how a nearly forty-year-old could be scared like this.
Han Fei next to him didn’t speak. Bai Xian stealthily glanced at him using his peripheral vision and noticed that Han Fei’s expression hadn’t changed at all.
"It turns out not everyone can be a hero. I should just honestly stick to acting." Bai Xian’s voice trembled as he clutched Han Fei’s sleeve with one hand and tightly grasped his phone with the other; these were his last feelings of security.
"There’s another possibility for the disappearance of the footprints; he might have stepped back into his original prints and returned the way he came." Han Fei looked at the shattered glass and retraced his steps.
As he approached the window, he stopped.
"Most of the glass shards fell inside the room, which means the person who broke the glass must have been standing outside the room. But I clearly remember there was no one in the corridor. Considering this, the person must be hiding in a room across the corridor!" Han Fei suddenly turned his head and saw a man with a bloody face holding a sharp knife standing at the window of the room next door!
The crucial part was that this man looked exactly like the security guard downstairs!
"A ghost! There’s a ghost!" Bai Xian felt every hair on his body stand on end; he had never encountered something this terrifying in his life!
A chill pierced his heart, and he felt as if his veins were about to freeze, his mind filled with words the security guard downstairs had said before.
Many people had died in this beauty salon, and this place became haunted at night!
Fear made Bai Xian lose his ability to think calmly in an instant; he shivered and kept repeating one sentence—"That security guard is a ghost, that security guard is a ghost!"
"Calm down! No ghost would smash a window by itself, and looking similar might just mean they’re twins." Han Fei stared at the man’s bloody face and lightly licked his lips: "If I had turned to inspect the room with the broken window, and had my back to him, he would surely have attacked me from the dark, stabbing me in the back."
"He looks just like that security guard, that guard is a dead man, they are all dead!" Bai Xian panicked, speaking incoherently. His only decent aspect was that he hadn’t run away, leaving Han Fei behind.
"Where fierce ghosts appear, the temperature will suddenly drop. If there’s no noticeable change in temperature, even if it is a ghost, it’s just an ordinary regret and obsession." Han Fei’s words were very clear, but Bai Xian couldn’t understand them anymore.
"What do you mean?"
"I just want to tell you, there’s no need to be afraid." Han Fei looked at the man standing at the window. "You’ve probably never seen a truly mangled face, have you? The flesh on those faces is turned inside out, blood mixes with the flesh turning black, and the putrid smell of blood can be detected from afar."
Han Fei’s suppressed voice caused both the man inside the room and Bai Xian to change color. They felt as if Han Fei was a foodie who, after tasting a rare dish, smiled and said that the meat tasted not much different from human flesh, yet there were subtle differences.
The man in the room clenched the knife in his hand, blood streamed down his chin, his arm muscles tensed, appearing ready to charge out at any moment.
"What should we do?" Bai Xian was the most panicked on the scene, his clothes soaked in cold sweat.
Han Fei didn’t answer Bai Xian but instead took out his phone and pressed the record button.
When he took out his phone, the man in the room thought he was going to call the police and did not hesitate anymore; he jumped right out of the window!
The blurred face, the strong and burly body, and the bright, sharp knife—all magnified in the eyes of Han Fei and Bai Xian.
The terrifying "murderer" approached them with an extremely oppressive feeling, all the while displaying a cruel smile.
"It’s over, it’s over!" Bai Xian tugged at Han Fei, stepping back bit by bit, filled with regret. He had hesitated for that split second and now they had lost the best chance to escape.
"We shouldn’t have waited for him to come out of the room!" internal regret flooded Bai Xian, especially now that his calves were weak, preventing him from running fast. "Han Fei, you’ve assisted the police so many times, did they tell you how to handle this kind of situation?"
"According to the police, when we encounter an armed robber, the first thing we shouldn’t do is try to take the knife or engage in close combat; if you can run, you absolutely must run." After speaking, he unbuttoned his suit jacket and glanced at Bai Xian. "What are you waiting for? Run!"
The three of them began to sprint almost simultaneously, except Bai Xian and Han Fei ran in opposite directions!
In that instant, both Bai Xian and the "murderer" were caught off-guard.
Bai Xian failed to block him; the "murderer" didn’t stop, Han Fei’s actions were simply too quick, as if he had never planned to run from the start.
As the "murderer" was unprepared to swing his knife, Han Fei had already closed the distance. This close combat was purely born from his experience fighting fierce ghosts, his movements were incredibly ruthless.
He kicked near the "murderer’s" thigh, the sound of dislocated bones clearly audible. As the "murderer" lost his balance, Han Fei’s fingers clamped the "murderer’s" cheeks like iron tongs, pushed the head forward, and using the force of the "murderer’s" fall, he smashed it against the nearby wall!
"Bang!"
The plaster fell off the wall, fine cracks emerged, and a bloom of blood remained where the "murderer’s" head had collided with the wall.
The body fell limp; the "murderer" who was just sneering now lay unconscious, as if he had passed out.
After kicking the sharp knife into the corner, Han Fei dusted off the plaster from his suit and then turned off the phone recording.
The entire process lasted only three seconds, Bai Xian had barely run a few meters when he looked back, the fierce "murderer" was already unconscious on the ground.
"You..."
Bai Xian looked at Han Fei, dressed in a suit and black leather shoes, looking at that gentle, slightly introverted face, unable to say a word for a long time.
