My ‘Healing’ Game -
Chapter 319: The Night of April 4th
Chapter 319: Chapter 319: The Night of April 4th
"I got the key to room 1244, so for my next login, I just need to enter room 1244 and then stay there for three hours to exit the game, effectively giving me another day to live,"
For Han Fei, having an extra day to live was a joyful thing, akin to pulling one over on the God of Death.
"When I was exiting the game, I faintly heard the system mention that I had obtained the key to Atrium 1244. Why would it refer to room 1244 as an ’atrium’? Could it be suggesting that every room in the Death Building holds a heart teeming with memories?"
After pondering this for a long while, Han Fei suddenly felt a tightness in his chest, as if someone had fiercely clenched it.
He clutched at his chest and instinctively looked up at the digital clock on the wall, it was exactly 4:44 AM.
"What does 4:44 AM mean for the Death Building? Can Brother Hua and Xiaofang survive the night?"
The pain in his chest came abruptly and vanished just as quickly.
Han Fei got up from the ground and dialed the number left by Li Xue, hoping the police could help investigate the two individuals. He didn’t know their specific names, but he was aware of the incidents that had happened to them.
One was a female live-streamer with a terminal illness who remained positive and wanted to share her joy, but ultimately gave up her own life due to various reasons.
The other had died from a fall, being the eldest daughter in her family.
Once the police learned that these two victims might also be related to the Butterfly, they immediately started a thorough investigation without Han Fei needing to urge them.
After doing all this, Han Fei left his room and went to Lihua Residential Community.
The Death Building Game in horror filmmaker Zhuang Ren’s home had myriad connections to the Death Building of Deep World. Clearing the Death Building Game would greatly assist Han Fei in exploring the Death Building.
The "Mystery Novelist" film crew experienced a murder case where the murderer ended up killing himself, but it still caused negative attention and rumors were rampant, drawing everyone’s focus to the Meat Factory Courtyard for Family where the Spider had once lived.
To avoid the spotlight, Han Fei didn’t need to film in the recent days, which conveniently gave him time to play the game during the day.
By the time the sun rose, Han Fei had arrived at Zhuang Ren’s doorstep.
He knocked lightly on the door, and to his surprise, footsteps sounded from inside rather quickly, and the bloodshot-eyed Zhuang Ren opened the door as if he had been waiting for a long time.
"Director Zhuang, you didn’t sleep all night, did you?"
"I wanted to see if I could clear the game myself, but I’m not skilled enough to reach the Death Building level,"
"You go get some sleep. I’ll play for you. If I see any of your family members in the game, I’ll wake you up immediately,"
"It’s okay, I’m not sleepy."
It was evident that Zhuang Ren truly cared about his family. He rushed to the sofa, kept pouring Han Fei drinks, tidied the sofa cushions, and wiped down the game controller for Han Fei to use.
A once-famous horror film director treating an actor like this was indeed rare.
After starting the game, Han Fei wasted no words and began to play directly.
The most twisted aspect of the Death Building Game was that death of the game character forced a return to the first map to start over. It seemed the game’s designer had never intended for anyone to clear it.
This mechanic caused Zhuang Ren to frequently explode in rage, smashing things around the room, but Han Fei found it quite normal.
In real life, people only have one life, and once dead, they lose everything. Starting over in the game was quite merciful already.
After spending an hour and a half, Han Fei had managed to get through the previous map and successfully entered the Death Building.
This time he didn’t just randomly enter a room nor did he stay put, instead, he ran straight towards the fourth floor with a clear goal in mind.
As he reached the staircase corner, the Delivery Ghost carrying a huge delivery box appeared. Han Fei let it chase after him and continued running up to Room No. 1044 on the fourth floor where the security room was located.
Upon opening the door and ducking inside, he found a dimly lit room with four NPCs dressed in security uniforms. They seemed to be the only normal NPCs inside the Death Building.
"Four?"
Approaching them triggered a conversation and quests. Through interaction, Han Fei learned that the four security guards, utilizing their spare time, were sharing ghost stories about the building.
From the time the building was constructed, it was never normal—numerous strange events had occurred, especially on April 4th every year.
On this day, there would always be new residents moving in and some old residents would mysteriously have extra "people" in their homes. It was also the most stressful day for the security staff every year.
The four security guards consisted of two veterans training two newbies. The seniors admonished the newcomers to remember all the rules and taboos.
Rules must not be broken, taboos must not be touched. Not seeing, not hearing, not overthinking allowed them to work here for a long time.
Han Fei was deeply engrossed in playing the game when his phone suddenly rang—it was a call from the police, so he picked up his phone and stepped outside.
"Did you find anything?"
"The female live-streamer you mentioned is quite famous. She disappeared on the night of April 4th, fourteen years ago, the cause of death was wrist cutting. She was found in the bathtub of her bathroom, lying in a white dress, already devoid of any signs of life," Li Xue’s voice emerged from the phone. "She was ill and under immense mental pressure before death. Someone had forged her chat records and used her face in some distasteful photos and videos."
"Why would they do such a thing?"
"Probably because they couldn’t imagine there were people like that in the world, so they wanted to ruin her, tarnish what was clean to cover their own filth and wretchedness."
"Were the perpetrators caught?"
"This is the most bizarre part. After our investigation, we discovered all the main culprits involved in the incident had disappeared," Li Xue seemed to be reviewing the files, responding slowly. "The most recent disappearance was the mastermind who inherently had a very dark side. He used to be a Chef but was stripped of his culinary license for deliberately adding substances to dishes. Out of necessity, he started delivering food, which is how he encountered the victim."
"He was charged with malicious slander and defamation that had severe consequences. Moreover, he had repeatedly attempted to add dangerous substances to the food delivery, violating public security regulations, and received a substantial sentence for these combined offenses."
"People like him, even after rejoining the community, were required to register regularly. But one day, he just vanished—alive yet unseen, dead yet unfound."
Li Xue’s words caught Han Fei’s attention. The Delivery Ghost appeared in Deep World, and only Butterfly could have done these things.
If Butterfly wanted to help Red Skirt seek revenge, then it should have let Red Skirt kill the Delivery Ghost or handed the Delivery Ghost over to Red Skirt for disposal, just as Han Fei had helped Ying Yue.
But in reality, Butterfly didn’t do that. It seemed to use the Delivery Ghost as a bargaining chip to control the Large-scaled Grudge, Red Skirt.
"Human nature is merely a pawn, and everything is just a tool in the eyes of Butterfly. The Delivery Ghost is its tool, and Red Skirt, in its eyes, might just be a slightly more formidable tool,"
Butterfly and Han Fei could maintain absolute rationality in many situations, but in essence, they were two different kinds of people.
"Li Xue, other than the female live-streamer, have you found any information on another woman?"
"Many people die from jumping off buildings every year, but the one matching your criteria, we only found one. She also had her incident on the night of April 4th, fourteen years ago."
