Chapter 293: Chapter 293: The New Protector God of Yimin Street (Three More)
Every time Han Fei saw a system alert related to Big Evil, he would experience a very complex emotion.
It was good that Big Evil was promoted to F rank, but it seemed that the faster it leveled up, the stronger the Death Intent on its owner became.
In other words, the better Big Evil’s life was, the closer Han Fei was to death. This kind of pet wasn’t truly brave; it was really not something anyone would dare to keep.
"Hatred skin? This skin feels just like human skin; I never expected it to belong to Hatred." Han Fei valued that piece of human skin very much. He had never seen Hatred before: "The appearance of this skin confirms that there is Hatred hidden in the Death Building, and it must be related to the butterfly."
Looking at the dazzling butterfly pattern on the human skin, Han Fei was considering how to maximize the effects of the human skin.
Seeing that Han Fei was very satisfied with the human skin, Big Evil happily circled around him. It seemed to want to rub against Han Fei, but the result was that Han Fei nearly died from poisoning.
Having kept Big Evil for not even three days, his poison resistance had already reached a rather impressive level.
"Well done." Han Fei, lips blackened, still insisted on encouraging Big Evil. After doing this, he began to ponder another issue.
The Flower Sea and the Eight Heads on Corpse Mountain have been dealt with, so why isn’t the F-grade task completed yet?
The Security Company isn’t any special building; this F-grade task shouldn’t be that difficult.
Standing in the Deep Pit, Han Fei found that without the suppression of the human skin, the faint obsessions left in those corpses slowly recovered. They had been stripped of everything by the butterflies, now only left with pain.
Looking at the corpses that seemed to be speaking in dreams, Han Fei also felt some pity. He took out the Rebirth Saber from his Item Bar.
"If one day I fall into the hands of the butterflies, I might end up like you, neither alive nor dead, having lost everything."
There are too many things in the Deep World that are more terrifying than death. For those Residual Souls trapped in the corpses, death is the last gift Han Fei could give them.
"I will send you to rebirth elsewhere, may you live the life you desire."
Countless arms grasped the hilt of the saber, converging into a warm and bright blade.
The edge of the saber passed through, dissolving the pain, soothing the despair, and offering those souls pierced by roots a final chance to say goodbye.
Most of the Residual Souls vanished into smoke, and a very few souls who held out their humanity until the end also entered the Rebirth Saber, standing behind Han Fei.
Other sabers stained with blood grow dull with killing, but the Rebirth Saber is just the opposite; its blade becomes even brighter and sharper, the unintentionally revealed aura making ordinary grudges feel fear.
Such a saber should not have appeared in the Deep World, and in the entire Deep World, only Han Fei could wield it.
After helping all the Residual Souls in the Deep Pit find release, Corpse Mountain completely collapsed.
Each piece of clothing represented one life. The crimes committed by the butterflies are unforgivable.
Climbing out of the Deep Pit, Han Fei turned his gaze to the last remaining soul on the fourth underground level—Bai Sinian’s mentor, the Security Guard responsible for leading newcomers.
He died in Bai Sinian’s stead, choosing not to drink the blood from the Blood Pool but to stop beside it, seemingly to help others like himself.
After being drained of memories and humanity by the flowers for a long time, Bai Sinian’s master had forgotten everything, leaving him only with a single instinct.
"Step aside, he is suffering now," Han Fei stopped in front of Bai Sinian, who was holding his master’s body, with a very complex expression on his face. He was not yet ready to accept it all.
After a long while, Bai Sinian gently laid his master down on the ground and quietly knelt beside him.
"Your master has helped many people, and you are just one of them. However, in the end, he resolutely chose to die for you. You need to think about why he did that," Han Fei gripped the Rebirth Saber tightly. He didn’t comfort Bai Sinian, he just told him the truth: "Perhaps your master saw some kind of hope in you. He thought you could change many things, that you could save more people."
"Me?" No one had ever said these things to Bai Sinian, and it was the first time he had thought about this question.
"I don’t know you as well as your master did, so you can choose not to believe me, but I hope you will believe in your master’s judgment." The final farewell over, Han Fei plunged the warm blade into Bai Sinian’s master’s chest but felt as though it touched something.
Upon removing Bai Sinian’s master’s Security Company uniform, Han Fei found a thick attendance sheet tucked close to his body. It contained names and photos of all the deceased, along with some of their deeds.
The boss of the Security Company hadn’t entirely lied. The Death Building turned the ghosts and monsters of Yimin Street into their hunting targets. If they didn’t periodically deliver suitable vessels to the Death Building, the people of Death Building would go out to find them themselves, and then the deaths and injuries would be even greater.
In a sense, they did protect Yimin Street, but they were far from being worthy of the title of Protector God.
The thick attendance sheet was almost soaked through with bloodstains, light to hold yet heavy with meaning.
Han Fei didn’t know how Bai Sinian’s master had managed to preserve this list, maybe he just didn’t want them to be forgotten.
"Next, this should be handed over to you." Han Fei gave the attendance sheet to Bai Sinian.
Bai Sinian silently took the attendance sheet and put it close to his heart, keeping it safely with him.
This timid ghost seemed to have made a decision, and he had started to change without realizing it.
The Rebirth Saber was plunged in again, and this time, without any resistance, Bai Sinian’s master’s Residual Soul entered the Rebirth Saber. The already bright blade became even more luminous, and Han Fei had gained another companion on his journey.
"The Rebirth Saber has recognized your master, and it could also be said that your master has recognized me."
Han Fei sheathed the blade, and at the same time, he finally received the system notification.
"Player number 0000 please note! You have successfully completed the F-grade hidden quest—Protector of Yimin Street! Free Skill Points increase by three!"
"Hidden quest completion exceeds ninety percent! Additional reward F-grade title—The Protector of Yimin Street!"
"The Protector of Yimin Street (F-grade title): From today onward, you are the new Protector of Yimin Street."
"With this title, you are now eligible to open the Shrines on Yimin Street! Friendliness of all Grudges on Yimin Street increased by three, hostility and regrets towards you within Yimin Street are reduced, Hatred is no longer within this range."
"Player number 0000 please note! You have successfully leveled up to level twelve! Free Attribute Point increases by one!"
After receiving the system notification, Han Fei realized that the true challenge of this F-grade quest wasn’t to kill the eight heads but to relieve all the Residual Souls of their suffering and to become their acknowledged, true Protector God.
