Chapter 294: Chapter 294: The Shrine at the Entrance of the Residential Area

"Killing the Eight-Headed did not complete the mission; it was only after helping Bai Sinian’s master to be freed that the task was considered finished. The true Protector God of Yimin Street turned out to be the most ordinary, obscure person."

The boss of the Security Company was in cahoots with the Death Building, his only thought was to save his own life.

Bai Sinian’s master was weak, nowhere near as powerful as the Death Building, completely outmatched, but he still tried his best to protect this street in every way possible.

"The judgment of a Protector God has nothing to do with strength but depends on what a person has actually done, which, to be honest, is quite in line with the usual ’Perfect Life’ style."

While Han Fei was feeling sentimental, he received the system’s final prompt.

"Attention, player number 0000! Your occupational resume has been updated — Applied for a job at the Security Company, killed the company’s boss on the very night, forced entry into the core restricted area of the company, went on a rampage, out of the entire staff of one hundred and seventy-one, only one survived!"

"Attention, player number 0000! Your title of Workplace Killer is about to be upgraded!"

The voice in his mind scared Han Fei into a cold sweat. What does it mean that out of the entire company of one hundred and seventy-one employees, only one person survived? It sounded as if he had wiped out the whole company.

Glancing back at the Corpse Pit and then at his hand that had held the Rebirth Saber, his eyelids twitched furiously.

The system was telling the truth, and it was hard to refute.

Opening his Attribute Panel and looking at his now spectacular personal resume, Han Fei felt it was absolutely preposterous.

With a resume like that, he could basically say goodbye to ever finding a regular job.

In the Deep World it might still be fine, but he imagined that if one day he returned to the Shallow games, this resume would probably scare any intelligent NPC to death.

After successfully reaching Level 12, Han Fei allocated his Attribute Points to Physical Strength, bringing his current Physical Strength value to 17 points. Every ten points in Physical Strength marked a significant threshold, and Han Fei reckoned it wouldn’t be long before he could achieve his dream — running faster than the ghosts.

"This Hidden Profession, Midnight Butcher, is truly terrifying. Physical Strength points are doubled, making it likely that no other player of the same level could be my match."

Currently, it seemed Han Fei was the only player in the Deep World, but once the game officially went into open beta, others might enter the Deep World, much like that insane game tester did initially.

No one could predict the future, and Han Fei was too lazy to consider the matters of the future. Just being alive to see the sun the next day was enough for him.

After cleaning up the Security Company, Han Fei’s original plan was to continue exploring the Death Building, but the emergence of the Protector God title changed his mind.

Han Fei had always been interested in the Shrine outside the entrance to the Happiness Residental Community. He was very curious about what was inside it, but had never had the chance to open it before.

After obtaining the title of Protector God, the system prompted him that he now had the qualification to open the Shrine, so he wanted to go back and take a look.

Having gathered all his neighbors back into the Spiritual Altar, Han Fei left the Security Company.

Whether it was the effect of the title of Protector God or not, as Han Fei walked on Yimin Street, he didn’t feel the surrounding was grim and terrifying. Instead, he felt every plant and tree there was very familiar, as if he had grown up right in this place.

Half an hour later, Han Fei quietly stepped out of the shadows and returned to the entrance of the Happiness Residental Community.

"The first time I walked out of the Happiness Residental Community, I picked up the broken bowl in front of the Shrine, and it was thanks to the power from within the Shrine that I wasn’t directly killed by the Fierce Ghost. Although I’ve never seen what’s inside the Shrine, it seems to have been watching over me all along."

The small Shrine was located in a corner by the entrance of the community and was very inconspicuous.

Han Fei had also mentally prepared himself before he reached out to grab the black cloth covering the Shrine.

"When I was very young, the adults at the orphanage used to warn us not to carelessly lift the black cloth on the shrines, to prevent disturbing the Divine Spirits. They also said that not everything enshrined in a roadside shrine is necessarily divine."

When he lifted the black cloth, Han Fei looked inside the Shrine.

The inner wall was blotched with bloodstains, and besides that, there was nothing else.

"Empty? Just an empty shell?"

As Han Fei was about to put the black cloth back in place, something changed inside the Shrine. It was as if the Shrine had its own consciousness. A pair of eyes opened amidst the mottled bloodstains.

The landlord’s ring on his finger instantly emitted a sharp sound. As Han Fei locked eyes with that pair, his Life Value, Energy, and Will began to drain away like crazy, until he no longer had the strength to lift the black cloth.

He sat on the ground, completely limp. Han Fei stared at the Shrine in shock, and before he could react, the black cloth had already been placed back over it.

"Eyes, a pair of eyes opened within the Shrine? It’s absorbing my life and soul!"

Crawling backwards, Han Fei looked at the Shrine with great trepidation. He had nearly died right at his own front door.

Compared to before, the dilapidated Shrine seemed to have regained a bit of its color.

"Player 0000, please note! Lighting the Shrine has failed!"

"Every Shrine hides a different ’divine entity’ behind it. Some Shrines may reward you handsomely when opened, while others may take your life outright."

"The level requirement for lighting a Shrine is Level 30! As the player has explored Yimin Street ahead of time and obtained the title of Protector God, you have gained early access to the qualification for lighting the Shrine!"

"Lighting the Shrine: After successfully lighting a Shrine, your name will be remembered by an Unspeakable existence, and you will receive their Curse, or their Blessing."

"Attention! Every Shrine hides an Unspeakable past behind it. Remember, do not attempt to uncover their secrets until you have sufficient means to protect your life."

Listening to the prompts in his mind, Han Fei absent-mindedly caressed the landlord’s ring, which already had two cracks on it.

"Normally, it takes being Level 30 to light a Shrine. No wonder the Shrine almost killed me." Han Fei was only at Level 12, and if he hadn’t primarily invested in Physical Strength, he might not have survived that encounter.

"The Midnight Butcher can gain double Physical Strength, and with other Attribute Bonuses, I reckon I could possibly light a Shrine before Level 20. Unfortunately, the Butterfly probably won’t give me the chance."

He staggered to his feet, his head spinning. Just as he was about to put away the landlord’s ring, something even worse happened.

A song suddenly echoed from the distant street. The daunting, mournful voice was rapidly drawing closer, heading straight for the Happiness Residential Community.

"Is it attracted by the Shrine?" With no time to hesitate, Han Fei clutched the Spiritual Altar and started to run like hell.

The song that usually revolved around the Happiness Residential Community had changed its target. The eerie song penetrated Han Fei’s ears like tiny chains piercing through his consciousness and brain sea, slowly hooking onto his memories.

"Is it coming for me?"

A crack appeared on the broken Spiritual Altar, and Yinglong emerged from within, immediately hoisting the weakened Han Fei onto his back and began to flee frantically.
