Chapter 271: What Bad Thoughts Can a Kitten Have?

Chapter 271: Chapter 271: What Bad Thoughts Can a Kitten Have?

"The pets in the pet shop are humans?"

Gazing at the massive cages before him, and the frail Residual Souls within, Han Fei felt an absurd sensation envelop him.

He had seen people keep animals as pets before, but this was the first time he witnessed humans being kept as pets by animals.

Each iron cage had a tag attached, meticulously detailing the age, obsessions, and personality of the Residual Soul inside, looking incredibly professional.

He had Yinglong release the Beast Doctor from the Spiritual Altar, and as soon as the animal doctor in his tattered white coat appeared in the pet shop, his complexion instantly turned ghastly pale.

"How could you actually come here! Get out now! If it hasn’t discovered you yet, you won’t have a chance if you don’t leave now!" The Beast Doctor didn’t dare to raise his voice, he caught hold of Han Fei’s clothes, extremely anxious.

"Can these Residual Souls in the cages still be saved?" The Residual Souls in the cages had the same appearance as living people, but they had come to regard themselves as animals and seemed to have lost the ability to resist, accepting their identities as pets by default.

"There’s no saving them! They chose to be pets themselves, and besides, being pets is safer than struggling to survive out there," the Beast Doctor spoke pragmatically. While the Residual Souls in the cages had lost their freedom and forgotten their own language, forced to mimic the barking of dogs, at least they were under the protection of the pet shop owner, and they were safe.

As long as they could survive, being pets to animals wasn’t so bad.

"Open the cages, if they wish to leave then take them away, I won’t force them, but I will give them the chance to choose," even in a place as treacherous as the Deep World, Han Fei adhered to his principles. He never actively harmed others; it was always others looking to take their chances with him, and then finding themselves overpowered by his defense.

"You’re going to get yourself killed!"

Driven into a corner with no other choice, the Beast Doctor opened the cages. If it wasn’t for Yinglong’s stern gaze fixed on him, he might have fled long ago.

When the cages opened, far from gratitude or joy, all that remained on the faces of the Residual Souls was numbness.

As if they had been trained for a long time, those Residual Souls didn’t dare to step out of the cages. Instead, they all hid in the far depths of their enclosures as if the cages were far safer than the outside world.

Clutching the Spiritual Altar, Han Fei didn’t seem to care as he walked past the row of iron cages towards the deepest part of the pet shop.

As he pushed open the reinforced door, before even entering, Han Fei could hear the hysterical roars and the clash of chains against the iron cages.

Following the sounds, the deepest room in the pet shop was completely drenched in blood red. The floor was layered with thick animal fur and remnants of flesh and blood, a few huge iron cages covered in black cloth stood against the walls, and in the center of the room was a massive metal table stained with blood.

"I usually train the pets in here, sew up their wounds, but now this place has been taken over by it," the Beast Doctor didn’t dare to enter the room. He was terrified of this place.

With neighbors on guard all around, Han Fei lifted the black cloth from one of the iron cages against the wall.

"Bang!"

As the black cloth fell, a man covered in burn scars, almost two meters tall, adorned with butterfly wings on his chest, was continuously striking the iron cage.

The man had the strength equivalent to Medium-level Resentment, his eyes were bloodshot, his expression manic.

Ordinary chains couldn’t possibly restrain him, but the chains in the pet shop’s cages seemed to be different, covered with animal fur and bloodstains, and entwined with numerous deformed Dead Souls.

"The owner of the pet shop dares to imprison a monster created by butterflies?" Observing the familiar Butterfly Pattern, Han Fei drew out the Rebirth Saber, "First, let’s send this monster for Rebirth, then figure out a way to take the chains and the iron cage back. That thing seems to be a Curse Item, too."

As Han Fei was pondering, a crying sound came from the Spiritual Altar in his hands, and the burly man in the cage let out an angry howl. All the chains on his body tautened.

"It’s over, it’s over! It’s coming! We’ve been discovered!" The color drained from the Beast Doctor’s face; he didn’t know where to hide and was frantically pacing in circles.

Silently donning the Beast Path Mask, Han Fei who was holding the Spiritual Altar watched the door quietly, ready for battle.

A fishy stench wafted through the air, with no sound of footsteps, but a strange voice came from outside, as if it had just learned to speak.

"Regardless of the pet, you must vaccinate it on schedule as required to prevent the spread of diseases."

The curtain of the corridor was drawn aside, and a "person" wielding a syringe, covered in animal fur, appeared in Han Fei’s line of sight.

That creature had a face resembling that of a cat, and its body was stitched together from various animals to take on a human shape.

"It is my ’pet’ made by accident, an almost undying being..." the veterinarian had already despaired.

The monster in the hallway muttered some phrases repeatedly, as if just learning to speak, with an exceptionally bizarre pronunciation.

Seeing the opened cage, it didn’t inquire about the reasons but directly reached in to grab the Residual Soul, then stabbed its neck with the syringe, injecting all the red-black tainted blood into the Residual Soul’s body.

Collapsed on the ground, the Residual Soul became even more animal-like, with its last bit of humanity now also extinguished.

After pulling out the syringe, the cat-faced stitched creature turned its gaze towards Han Fei in the deepest part of the room, its mouth splitting open as if it were smiling.

"Animals have their packs, but no matter what, don’t let your pet contact strays or wild animals to prevent disease transmission."

It muttered incomprehensible speech, and suddenly its speed surged!

Han Fei only felt the fishy wind blow against his face, and then he was pushed away by a force.

When his vision restored, Han Fei saw Cry at the spot where he had just been standing, its tiny body sprouting spikes of despair.

Meanwhile, the creature had already entered the back room at some point, one of its arms injured by Cry, with despair dissolving on it.

"So fast?" Han Fei’s physical strength was not on the same level as his opponent’s. Without the neighbor’s help, he estimated he would have been killed the moment he saw it.

No wonder Cry and Yinglong had told him to avoid the pet store; Cry was not strong enough to deal with such a creature before entering Beast Alley.

Cocking its head to look at the needle mark on its arm, the cat-faced stitched monster opened its mouth. It extended its barbed tongue to lick the needle infused with despair, then took another syringe filled with red liquid from the fur on its abdomen.

"If you are accidentally scratched or bitten by a pet, be sure to seek medical attention promptly and get the required vaccinations."

After saying this, it jabbed the syringe into its own neck.

Black veins appeared one after another, and the cat-faced stitched monster’s body began to swell wildly. The face that was once somewhat cute turned ferocious and frightening; this seemed to be its true form.

And as the monster began its frenzied rampage, Han Fei suddenly received a system prompt.

"Attention Player 0000! You have successfully triggered a Grade G Hidden Quest—Pet Adoption."

"Having found a job, you are beginning your career. In the face of an increasingly competitive workplace, having a pet can provide emotional support, alleviating unnecessary stress and helping to regulate your emotions."

"A good pet is a lifelong companion, a source of happiness, and a means to a healthy life. Seeing such a cute, well-behaved creature, don’t you also feel healed?"

Looking at the "little kitten" in front of him, with fangs piercing through its lower jaw, covered in stitching marks, and swelled up to three meters, Han Fei’s eyelids twitched slightly.
