Chapter 227 The Butcher’s Choice
Chapter 227: Chapter 227 The Butcher’s Choice
Looking at the severed hand holding the knife, Han Fei was still unsettled, having just skirted the edge of life and death.
Taking a deep breath, Han Fei slowly gained courage again, squatting next to the severed hand.
Han Fei knew that the nearly shattered knife was dangerous, but he was reluctant to leave just like that.
"When I first touched the Pig-faced Monster’s knife, the system hinted that each Midnight Butcher has his own knife, perhaps I could find one belonging to me here."
"Based on this hint, to obtain the Midnight Butcher’s hidden profession, one must first get a knife in Beast Alley."
The knives in Beast Alley were mostly controlled by monsters, and even ownerless knives, being covered with irrational grudges, could not be easily used.
But the knife in front of him presented an opportunity for Han Fei, as the grudges inside the knife didn’t seem so hostile to him since he had saved Wang Sheng’s life.
"This must be karma."
Finding one’s own knife in Beast Alley was extremely difficult, and one could easily lose their life, but Han Fei’s impulsive decision had helped him find a shortcut.
After mentally preparing himself, Han Fei prepared to touch the Boning Knife again. Seeing Han Fei’s relentless actions, the Black Giant Python moved backward and even covered its eyes with its tail.
The tips of his fingers touched the Boning Knife for the second time, a chilling breath traveling up his arm into his brain, making Han Fei shiver.
"The six Fierce Ghosts imprisoned inside the knife didn’t come out again!"
Off to a good start, Han Fei grew bolder, he pried open the severed hand’s fingers bit by bit, then grasped the Boning Knife in his palm!
"Player ID 0000 please note! You have successfully acquired a cursed knife in Beast Alley, would you like to officially start the quest to obtain the Midnight Butcher’s hidden profession?"
"Yes," Han Fei didn’t think twice and chose to start, a big part of his reason for coming to Beast Alley was for this hidden profession.
"Player ID 0000 please note! Every choice you make next might affect the final outcome! Please choose your first mission!"
"Optional mission one: Use the knife in your hand to take a life, kill anything, a person, a ghost, or an animal."
"Optional mission two: Use the knife in your hand to save a person, or save a ghost, an animal."
Two completely opposite choices lay before Han Fei, slaughter and assistance.
"If I choose to assist, what are the criteria for assistance? Can I injure Xu Qin’s little pet and then heal it?" If he didn’t complete the mission, Han Fei wouldn’t be able to log out and would be trapped in the game forever.
"Forget it, Xu Qin’s little pet doesn’t seem to be a person, or a ghost, or even an animal, even the system doesn’t know what it is. Besides, it just saved me, I really can’t bring myself to hurt it."
After pondering for a moment, Han Fei chose the first mission, to kill something.
Killing was easier compared to assisting.
After accepting the first mission, Han Fei tried to store the Boning Knife in his item bar, but as soon as he thought about it, a stabbing pain came from his palm, the six irrational grudges hadn’t fully accepted Han Fei.
"Getting a knife of my own is so hard."
It was easy to find a knife in the Deep World, but finding one that could harm ghosts was very difficult.
Carefully stashing the Boning Knife, Han Fei didn’t act recklessly, planning to stay inside the house for three hours before going out.
But fate wouldn’t have it so. Just after ten minutes, footsteps outside the door resurfaced, the Pig-faced Monster seemed to have smelled something, constantly lurking around.
"This really is troublesome."
The footsteps became more frequent, with the adversary slowly narrowing down the search area, the Black Giant Python next to Han Fei also began to grow restless.
"I can’t stay here anymore, the owner of the footsteps seems about to discover me."
His body had somewhat recovered, and Han Fei held his breath as those footsteps appeared again.
Once the footsteps had receded, he and the Black Giant Python decisively left the residence and walked in the opposite direction of the footsteps.
With prior experience, Han Fei didn’t rush this time. He slowed his pace, making sure not to make any noise.
As he reached the corner of the alley, the heavy footsteps sounded once again.
The pig-faced woman, with human teeth wrapped around her waist, appeared. She had been lurking for a long time, and this time she seemed to have made up her mind as she stopped at the doorway of the old house Han Fei had just left.
"Bang!"
The heavy knife in her hand smashed against the door, her face wearing a cruel smile, her eyes full of excited light.
More convinced that there was someone hiding in the house, saliva dripped from her mouth, and her arm’s veins bulged as she furiously swung her knife.
The wooden door was chopped down, and she roared as she charged into the old house.
The scene unfolding in the distance made Han Fei break out in a cold sweat, realizing that nowhere in Beast Alley was safe.
Without looking back, Han Fei quickly left, but just then, the system’s voice sounded in his mind.
"Evaluation One: Careful, decisive, you have astonishing intuition and precise judgment, as well as pretty good luck. You are suited for many professions, including that of a Butcher."
"Does every choice after the task begins affect the final result, not just which task I chose, but also the decisions I make when I encounter situations?"
Having just escaped a crisis, Han Fei dared not be careless. He navigated through the complex maze of alleys, trying hard to remember each path.
Han Fei wanted to accomplish something no one ever had; he wanted to use his exceptional memory to map out Beast Alley in his mind.
Only by knowing every path would he have a chance to find a way out.
Dodging the Pig-faced Monster, trying to push every door in the alley, and slowly approaching Xu Qin with the help of the Blood-colored Paperman, Han Fei supported his injured body in an extreme game.
After passing three intersections with the help of the Black Giant Python to scout, Han Fei avoided two pig-faced monsters. As he entered the fourth intersection, a cat’s meow suddenly broke the dead silence of the alley.
The sound was soft, but Han Fei heard it clearly.
He turned to look at the garbage heap in the corner, where a black cat was pinned under a corpse, its leg pierced by a rusted wire.
The more it struggled, the tighter the wire constricted.
"A trap? Or is someone deliberately torturing it for fun?"
A meow could attract something. It was not wise to stay long, but Han Fei thought of something else.
The task he had just received said that as long as he used that knife to kill, he could complete the task. Killing a disabled cat also counted as completing the task.
"Completing the task probably isn’t what’s most important. What’s most important are the choices I make."
Without hesitation, Han Fei first let the Black Giant Python approach to ensure there was nothing else hidden in the garbage heap. Then, he picked up the cursed Boning Knife and chopped at the wire.
As he removed the wire from the black cat’s leg, the startled cat sprinted away with a "swish".
"If this is someone’s trap, once they discover the cat’s meow has stopped, they will definitely come to check. I need to leave quickly."
Han Fei stowed the Boning Knife away. He hadn’t walked far when the system prompt sounded in his mind again.
"Evaluation Two: You, who chose to kill, saved a cat. Perhaps you understand that a person who is cruel to animals can also become cruel to people."
