Chapter 221: Chapter 221: There is a Kind of Beast that Looks Like a Human
The situation kept getting worse for the barber, and he was well aware of this problem.
Under the veil of his dark hair, his eyeballs moved rapidly. Glancing at the dumpling shop outside the alley, the barber said, "I can’t escape there. The shop owner harbors tremendous hostility towards all humanoid grudges. If he sees me in my weakened state, he’ll surely be the first to kill me and wrap me into dumplings."
"Apart from the dumpling shop, the only place I could shake them off now is Beast Alley." The barber’s eyes were filled with blood silk. He had just escaped from such a perilous place and now he realized he had to return.
A vicious look flashed through his eyes, and the barber silently swore that if he had the chance, he would kill Han Fei and all the grudges.
His coat, imbued with dark energy, was torn, revealing his dry and ugly body. The barber, nearly reaching his limit, suddenly threw the wooden box in his hands towards Han Fei.
He had realized that Han Fei, who looked least like a fierce ghost, was actually the backbone of all the fierce ghosts.
The blood from the wooden box sprayed across the sky, and screams of dead souls emerged from the box. Han Fei paid no mind to these. What he actually cared about was the dinner knife mixed with the blood.
The knife was ordinary, but Han Fei remembered it clearly; Xu Qin had once lent it to him.
Looking at the thin layer of human skin wrapped around the handle, Han Fei recalled many things, "She never took off the human skin padding, huh."
In one go, the barber released all the residual souls imprisoned in the box, and his body aged rapidly. He hid his own residual soul within his black hair.
"The woman you are looking for died in Beast Alley, and you will never be able to find her!"
After dropping this vicious curse, the barber’s body was completely consumed by the coat, which then shattered, and countless strands of black hair scattered on the ground, running in all directions.
"Thinking of leaving?"
Normally, there would be no chance to catch up to him by now, but Han Fei had anticipated such a situation long ago.
He stored the dinner knife belonging to Xu Qin properly and then fixed his gaze on the blood-colored Paperman.
During the fight, the blood-colored Paperman had shoved a part of its body into the barber’s soul. It could vaguely sense the locations of those paper scraps.
"Chase!"
Han Fei’s ultimate goal was Death Building. Grudges would be randomly separated inside, but curse items remained unaffected. Han Fei also planned to enter it with Xu Qin.
No matter the reason, Han Fei must find Xu Qin!
Grasping the human skin-wrapped handle, Han Fei let the black giant python leave his body. The barber could have kept delaying, which would have allowed dark energy to invade Han Fei’s body, inflicting major damage. Regrettably, the barber was completely intimidated by Han Fei’s relentless spirit.
The duration of the dark energy in his body was controlled within thirty seconds. Additionally, Han Fei had added all the upgraded attribute points to his physical strength. Although he was somewhat affected, it was not severe.
He, along with the neighbors from Happiness Residental Community, followed the blood-colored Paperman into the deeper alleys of the street.
In the past, Han Fei had only walked near the street; this was his first time diving deep into the city district.
The complex maze of alleys, heaps of trash big and small, omnipresent foul stench, and the muddy ground mixed with bloodstains beneath their feet.
The walls, smeared with filth, were marked with various eerie patterns. Occasionally, one could see a couple of tightly shut doors. If it weren’t for tracking down Xu Qin, Han Fei would never have ventured into these labyrinthine alleys.
More and more junctions appeared, and even with Han Fei’s exceptional memory, he was getting confused because all the alleys were too similar.
"Where is that guy heading?"
"The night abounds with dreams," thought Han Fei, eager to put an end to the barber. The latter, of course, was not foolish and kept shifting locations, as if sensing Han Fei’s relentless pursuit.
The deeper they went into the alley, the more unsettling their surroundings became—very cold, very quiet, and very sinister.
The deep parts of the alley seemed a completely different world from the city outside, much like the real Xinhu.
The core city district was brilliantly lit and lively, while the outskirts were all desolate and dilapidated old buildings.
Time passed without knowing how long. Suddenly, the blood-colored Paperman stopped, and a junction appeared in front of everyone.
Two deep alleys seemed to lead to different places—the left one had a stone lion without its head at the entrance, and the smell of blood was so intense inside that even the muddy ground bore a dark red hue.
The right alley wafted with a putrid smell, and one could faintly see some sort of carcass thrown in the corner of the alley, with strange insects crawling over it at times.
Both alleys gave an uncomfortable feeling, and whether one chose the left or the right, it seemed very dangerous.
"The barber’s scent disappeared right here, which side would he choose?"
There were no footprints on the ground, the barber had not left any traces; he had made up his mind from the start to hide here.
"Should we split up and follow?" Yinglong was uncertain, it was the only way, but it was very dangerous to do so in an unknown area.
After a moment of thought, Han Fei shook his head, "If we split up and there are more intersections inside the alleys, what then? There’s only one Blood-colored Paperman, and we must follow it to find the barber."
All the neighbors were staring at the Blood-colored Paperman, the paper figure that looked exactly like Xu Qin had stayed in place for a long time before it walked towards the right alley where animal carcasses were piled.
"Follow it!"
The Blood-colored Paperman contained Xu Qin’s curse; it seemed to sense something, which suddenly prompted its decision.
As Han Fei moved quickly forward, all he wanted was to catch the barber and find out where Xu Qin was. But as soon as he stepped into the right alley, a strong stench hit him like a giant wave, almost incapacitating his senses.
At the same time, the cold voice of the system echoed in the depths of Han Fei’s brain.
"Player number 0000, please be aware! You have successfully unlocked the hidden map Beast Alley! Triggered F-level hidden mission—Beast Alley!"
"Beast Alley (F-level hidden mission): Human love, hope, and fear are no different from those of animals; they are like sunlight, originating from and falling in the same place. If you don’t believe it, I can start by proving it to you through fear and death."
"Mission requirement: Survive."
There was no time limit, no exploration target, no compulsory task requirements; the only requirement for this F-level hidden mission was simply to survive.
When Han Fei heard these words, he had a very bad feeling.
He had never received such a straightforward mission before, and such clarity usually signaled extreme danger.
"Did I just hear the words ’hidden map’? Is Beast Alley also a hidden map?"
Looking around, Han Fei was engulfed in a strong putrid smell, with only the Blood-colored Paperman beside him, all the other neighbors had disappeared.
Turning around, Han Fei realized the way back was gone, behind him was no longer an intersection but a deep alley that stretched into the unknown.
"It’s OK, at least the Blood-colored Paperman and Xu Qin’s pet are with me; it’s not the worst-case scenario."
Always maintaining optimism was the reason Han Fei had survived in the Deep World; only those who never give up hope have a chance to see the daybreak.
Holding the Blood-colored Paperman in his palm, Han Fei hadn’t even had time to open his item bar when he heard heavy panting coming from behind in the alley.
The sound didn’t seem human; it was more like a hungry beast that had finally found an injured prey.
Han Fei had no idea what was making the sound; his body had already started moving away subconsciously, with nowhere to hide in the alley, and seeing people may be too late to run.
His reaction was quite fast, but even so, it was not enough.
Accompanied by a dense stench, a creature wearing a pig-faced mask emerged from the depths of the dark alley.
It was much taller than a normal person, its exposed skin covered in wounds and tooth marks, and more terrifying was that the lower half of its pig-faced mask was smashed, and beneath it seemed to be another pig face.
A meat grinder’s saw blade was embedded in the flesh on its back, and its oily, blood-stained clothes were bound with chains, with a large hand holding a cleaver used for chopping bones.
"Meat, meat, meat!"
Its eyes beneath the mask stared fixedly at Han Fei’s back, carrying that pungent smell, it suddenly accelerated like an uncontrollable chariot, charging towards Han Fei.
