Chapter 472: Chapter 9: Yaya Runs Away from Home

Lin Xiaoguai hadn’t expected that one day she would be able to recall Wang Zhaodi with such equanimity that a strong sense of sudden realization rose in her heart.

Regaining her composure, she took out her phone and dialed Shen Xiu’s number.

"Sister-in-law?" Shen Xiu’s voice sounded somewhat surprised.

"Xiuxiu," Lin Xiaoguai hesitated before asking, "Do you know what happened to Wang Zhaodi’s family?"

"Them?" Shen Xiu’s voice carried a chill, "How could I not know? They caused a commotion at our hospital the day before yesterday, clamoring for my father’s contact information. If it hadn’t been for our head nurse’s quick decision to call security, I might have lost my job because of them. Even so, the head nurse lectured me for an hour."

"It was only after I called the family that I found out Shen Xiaobao had accidentally killed someone, they said he might be facing prison time. Right now, the whole family is scrambling to get him out."

"Accidental killing?" Lin Xiaoguai was extremely surprised.

"That’s putting it nicely. Who doesn’t know what Shen Xiaobao is like? I believe he didn’t mean to kill anyone, but I can’t say the same about anything else. I only found out recently that not only did Shen Xiaobao lack any prospects after leaving school, he didn’t even have a stable job and was just a hoodlum. Going to jail isn’t new for him, but this time he might be in for the longest. Back when I ran into him on the street, he even came up to spew insults at me and tried to slap me. Luckily, there were police nearby who took him to the station. The guy he ’accidentally’ killed, it turns out, was from Yuanjiazhuang. Apparently, he said something unpleasant to Shen Xiaobao, and they ended up fighting. Shen Xiaobao and his two accomplices put up a tough fight; the guy resisted fiercely, and in the heat of the moment, they went too far. By the time they realized something was wrong, he was already breathing his last." Shen Xiu’s resentment towards both Wang Zhaodi and Shen Xiaobao was more than evident.

"Then how did Wang Zhaodi have my family’s number?" Lin Xiaoguai wondered.

"I’m not sure; I definitely didn’t tell them. But it’s not difficult to find out. Although not many people in our hometown know your family’s number, the doors are always open in our countryside, while most folks are out wandering around. Nowadays, many phones have caller ID, and the numbers from the Capital have a different prefix, easy to recognize."

Lin Xiaoguai still felt something wasn’t right. She knew Wang Zhaodi well enough—there was no kindness in him, a mean-spirited person, but all his misdeeds were obvious, and he always made a scene. He wasn’t the type to pull something like this in secret.

"Right, is Wang Zhaodi mentally unstable?" she suddenly remembered to ask.

"Hasn’t he always been a bit off?" Shen Xiu replied nonchalantly.

Lin Xiaoguai was speechless and finally said, "Alright then, you’re busy, I won’t disturb your work."

When Shen Chi returned, she told him everything without him even furrowing his brow; he just stroked his chin and said, "This is an issue indeed requiring some intervention."

Lin Xiaoguai had thought that, for once, he was going to help out. But a few days later, Shen Xiu called to say that somehow, Shen Xiaobao’s charge had changed from accidental killing to intentional homicide.

"What exactly happened?" she couldn’t grasp it.

"I’m not entirely sure, but it seems like Shen Xiaobao had done something pretty terrible before, which got dug up, and the judgment was altered."

"Something terrible?" Lin Xiaoguai couldn’t understand what could have turned Shen Xiaobao’s charge from accidental killing to intentional homicide.

"That incident was actually quite horrific," Shen Xiu paused, "It happened about two months ago. You know the Xiling Path in the county, not many people walk there. There was a car accident, an eight or nine-year-old boy was hit and killed. The boy wasn’t severely injured; timely medical attention could have saved him. But the driver disappeared, no one found him, and the boy bled to death. Then, it came out that Shen Xiaobao had passed by that way at the time. Although he claims he didn’t notice the child lying on the road, not many believed him, because the boy had left a big pool of blood, and it would be impossible not to attract attention. People didn’t say it out loud, but they all judged him for not lending aid. Although legally one doesn’t have to bear responsibility for failing to assist, morally... The incident was already tricky in discerning whether the killing was unintentional or not, but because of this, the person responsible for the case... you understand."

Without any evidence, but the timing was too "coincidental" with Shen Xiaobao’s past act of failing to assist coming to light, Lin Xiaoguai couldn’t help but suspect Shen Chi.

But it was only a suspicion; she felt no sympathy for Shen Xiaobao. She wouldn’t kick someone when they were down, but if Shen Chi decided to act... she was actually quite pleased.
