Chapter 471 - 8 An Unexpected Phone Call

Chapter 471: Chapter 8 An Unexpected Phone Call

He Xiaoxiao was on the verge of tears; she truly hadn’t expected Lin Xiaoguai to be Xu Ji’s aunt. She had been pursuing Xu Ji for two years, meeting his cousins, his uncles and aunts, and even his sister, but she had never seen this "little aunt."

—Lin Xiaoguai had visited before, but it was her first time coming to Xu Ji’s dorm. Normally when she brought him things, she would just make a phone call, asking him to meet her at the campus gate to pick them up, exchange a few words, and leave. But this time, she had so many things to bring him that she drove in.

He Xiaoxiao glanced down at her own outfit with a tangle of worry—a light green checkered shirt with somewhat worn jeans. And then she thought about the ponytail she had tied today, not to mention she hadn’t put on any makeup!

Was there a worse way to meet his elder for the first time as Xu Ji’s girlfriend?

Lin Xiaoguai’s gaze settled on Xu Ji, the meaning behind it very clear.

Xu Ji cleared his throat, "Xiaoxiao, go back first."

"Eh?" He Xiaoxiao thought he was angry and quickly whispered, "Didn’t we agree to go eat pan-fried dumplings together at Liu Ji? How about I wait outside for you?"

Xu Ji raised his hand to rub his forehead, already knowing she wouldn’t be easy to dismiss. After a moment, he nodded, "Alright." He feared that if the pestering went on, his aunt would scoff.

"Alright, spill it—what’s this girl’s deal?" After He Xiaoxiao had hesitantly left, Lin Xiaoguai rushed to ask.

"Isn’t it just like that?" Looking up and seeing the amusement in Lin Xiaoguai’s eyes, Xu Ji bashfully said, "She’s the one who pursued me. Aunt, you know, I spend most of my time in the lab, far from those girls... it’s only because of my appearance that they... uh, come forward. There’s no shortage of girls chasing me, but honestly, not many can last over half a year because they realize how dull and boring it is to be with me. But Xiaoxiao has been after me for two years, and I... don’t exactly dislike her. Mom has been really pushing too, so I agreed to try dating her."

Lin Xiaoguai sensed Shen Chi cared more for the girl than he let on. If it had been an older girl, she would have been happy, but this girl...

"Is she of age?"

"...She just got her ID card last month," Xu Ji said somewhat uncomfortably, tugging at his collar.

"You’re not... just waiting for her to come of age, were you?" Lin Xiaoguai blurted out.

Her instinct was that her nephew wasn’t so passive. At first, he might be caught off guard by a girl’s relentless pursuit, but once he collected himself, he would surely come up with a way to deal with it. Besides, no matter how persistent a girl was, if the boy gave no response at all, she couldn’t keep it up, right?

"Cough, cough..." Xu Ji was drinking water and choked upon hearing her words. After a while, he said, somewhat irritated, "Aunt!"

"Did I hit the nail on the head?" Lin Xiaoguai teased.

Xu Ji truly had no recourse with Lin Xiaoguai. This aunt was very good to the children of relatives, and they were all very close to her. Sometimes when they didn’t want to talk to their parents, they could speak to her without hesitation. In addition, he owed his life to her, so his respect and affection for her were even more special.

Moreover, compared to his mother, his aunt, who was always willing to communicate with him as an equal, really did understand him better.

Xu Ji covered his face, "Don’t you know the four words ’unspoken understanding,’ Aunt?"

"Got it, got it, won’t say another word." Lin Xiaoguai made a zipping motion across her lips.

She continued, "Hey, talk to me about this girl."

"You won’t tell Mom?" Xu Ji asked doubtfully.

Lin Xiaoguai pondered, "If she doesn’t ask, I won’t say."

"Alright." Xu Ji’s face broke into a slight smile, "Aunt, don’t be fooled by Xiaoxiao’s seemingly clueless and clumsy demeanor; in reality, she’s actually pretty smart. She never seems to study hard, yet always scores within the top ten in her grade. Plus, although it may not look like it, she actually studies science, especially excels in math—always landing perfect scores, a star student in their math teacher’s eyes."

"Hmm... is she still in high school today?"

"Junior year," Xu Ji said, scratching his face.

Lin Xiaoguai’s eyes widened, "She’s been chasing you for two years, meaning she started when she was still in middle school?"

Xu Ji nodded, a mix of embarrassment and pride on his face.

Lin Xiaoguai realized that Xu Ji truly did care for the girl.

But...

As Lin Xiaoguai steered her car into Zhi Xin Garden, she couldn’t help but worry: How stable could a romance be at seventeen or eighteen? What if He Xiaoxiao moved on, and yet Ping’an got deeply involved...

He had his worries, too, but Xu Ji was always decisive, not a fan of too much hesitation. Now that he had confirmed his feelings for her, there was no reason to retreat.

Even if it ended in failure, he would have no regrets.

"Xu Ji, does your aunt dislike me?" On the way back from Liu Ji, He Xiaoxiao asked with some unease.

"Why would she?" Xu Ji stretched out his hand to pinch her cheek, "You can thank your face for that. You know, my aunt adores children, and with you being so child-like, it would be hard for her to dislike you."

"Really?" He Xiaoxiao’s eyes grew wide. After a pause and seeming uncertain, she said, "I was actually wondering if I should buy some mature clothes, maybe get some makeup too. But hearing you say this... no need to bother?"

"Forget about it," Xu Ji glanced at her, "Even if my aunt likes you, that doesn’t mean she’d approve of you being my girlfriend."

"Ah, why do you always only say things halfway?" He Xiaoxiao glared at him annoyedly, pausing before hesitantly adding, "Should I go shopping this afternoon then?"

"You do need to buy clothes, but skip the makeup—my aunt doesn’t like wearing it herself," Xu Ji replied.

"Okay, I’ll listen to you."

Returning to Xu Ji’s dormitory and looking at the additional items, He Xiaoxiao curiously asked, "What did your aunt bring for you?"

"Some food and clothes."

"Can I take a look?" He Xiaoxiao said eagerly.

"Be my guest."

He Xiaoxiao first came across the items prepared by Han Shouzhen, and she exclaimed in surprise, "Xu Ji, I had no idea you actually ate pickled vegetables."

Xu Ji was puzzled, "Why couldn’t I eat pickled vegetables?"

"Uh..." He Xiaoxiao smiled, "I just can’t picture it."

As she continued to rummage, she suddenly came across some underwear, with two rolls of men’s briefs on top. Her face instantly turned red, and she put the items back in place before moving on to another bag.

Luckily, she had her back to Xu Ji; otherwise, she would have probably been even more embarrassed.

"Why is there a suit?" He Xiaoxiao asked, surprised.

"My aunt must have made it," Xu Ji answered after a pause, "I think I mentioned to her that I needed to wear a suit when attending events with the professor."

"She made it herself?" He Xiaoxiao asked out of curiosity, "Is your aunt in the clothing business?"

Xu Ji shook his head, "No, she just makes clothes for family and close friends."

"No way, that’s impressive! This suit looks just as good as the ones from boutique stores in the mall." He Xiaoxiao unfolded the suit and said, "Do you want to try it on? I think you’d look great in this suit."

Xu Ji hesitated at her words and then put down the book in his hand, "Alright."

He looked at He Xiaoxiao, "You go outside."

He Xiaoxiao pouted and muttered under her breath, "Who wanted to see you anyway?" Despite her words, her gaze couldn’t hide a touch of disappointment.

After Xu Ji changed, he found that the suit really fitted him and, unlike store-bought suits, it wasn’t tight, but it was very comfortable and still looked tailored.

"You look really good in a suit, Xu Ji," He Xiaoxiao’s eyes widened.

"Enough with the fangirling," Xu Ji said helplessly as he playfully flicked her nose.

Lin Xiaoguai went to the store for a while before driving back home. On arrival, she threw the car keys onto the coffee table and was about to go upstairs to change when she heard the landline ring.

"Hello, hi," she answered.

"Is this Ms. Lin speaking? This is Sun Changlin. The recent payment for your manuscript has been processed. Shall we transfer it to the Si Yuan Charity Foundation’s account as before?"

"Yes, that would be great, thank you."

After hanging up the phone, Lin Xiaoguai was about to go upstairs when the landline rang once again.

She frowned slightly and checked the caller ID—it was an unfamiliar number.

After a moment of hesitation, Lin Xiaoguai picked up the call. Before she could speak, a voice came through from the other end.

"Is this Lin Xiaoguai? Don’t you try to trick me by saying you’re the housekeeper; I recognize your voice, you can’t fool me."

She furrowed her brows—this voice sounded familiar, but who was it?

"Mom, don’t get worked up, perhaps it really isn’t your sister-in-law who picked up the phone," another weaker voice suggested from the side.

Mom? Was it someone from back home?

"Get Min Cheng to answer the phone, tell Min Cheng to answer the phone!" demanded the previous voice.

Mrs. Zhang came in from outside only to see Lin Xiaoguai holding the phone, lost in thought. She was wondering about the situation when she heard a shout from the phone—"Lin Xiaoguai, are you listening? Tell Min Cheng to answer the phone!"

Mrs. Zhang’s face changed color immediately, "Why are they still calling here." Without hesitation, she snatched the phone from Lin Xiaoguai and hung up.

"What’s going on?" Lin Xiaoguai finally remembered whose voice was on the phone.

— Wang Zhaodi.

"It’s probably some crazy person," Mrs. Zhang put down the basket of groceries, frowning as she said, "They’ve called several times today, spewing filthy language. It’s been particularly nasty. I told her I wasn’t the lady of the house, but she wouldn’t believe me and kept calling back, demanding to speak to the old master. Eventually, I purposely snuck out to buy groceries, thinking if she couldn’t get through for a while, she might give up... But I have no idea how she found out the names of the lady and the old master."

After finishing her explanation, Mrs. Zhang grumbled, "People are so weird these days, just the other day someone called trying to sell me something... oh what was it, I forget."

"That’s okay, Mrs. Zhang, go ahead and start on the dinner," Lin Xiaoguai instructed.

"Alright," Mrs. Zhang replied.

Lin Xiaoguai sat on the sofa, pondering the previous call. The more she thought about it, the more troubling it seemed—was Wang Zhaodi mentally unstable?

And how did she get the house’s phone number?
