Chapter 497: Chapter 363: Relaxed and at Ease_2
Bart whispered, "That man’s name is Glenn Mitchell."
Owen Bertram nodded slightly and said to everyone, "Stay close to me and don’t fall behind."
Because they had been delayed by the gathering, most of the cultivators on this layer had already left. Owen didn’t hurry to the next layer but made a slight movement with his palm, and the Jade Cicada Responsive Object was already in his hand.
After communicating with Ken, the Jade Cicada had been imbued with the "full imprint," giving it not only the ability to suppress but also many other functions, one of which was the perception of surrounding insects.
The Jade Cicada was his most powerful, dependable backing during the second test, where he had a hard fight with Evans Graham.
The Zombie Cave was very peculiar. The first layer was actually the smallest in size. Owen used the guidance of the Jade Cicada to search, leading everyone through the dense vegetation. There were also man-eating demon plants here, but they could sense the strength of these cultivators and stayed tightly closed, pretending to be ordinary plants without revealing any ferociousness.
One of the disciples from poor families couldn’t help but say, "Sir, there’s not much of value in this first layer."
Before Owen could answer, Bart glared at him fiercely, "Shut up, just follow the sir. Last time I didn’t stick close to him, and I suffered a lot!"
Although he suppressed the dissent, there were obvious signs of disobedience in the team.
Owen ignored these matters, lifted a thick layer of ancient vines, and revealed a basin-sized hole behind them. A hissing sound of insects came out, followed by a dark shadow flashing from the hole: a strange, dark red worm-like creature more than ten feet long, with dozens of needle-like whiskers on its tail. The impoverished cultivators exclaimed, "There’s a Tier-3 on the first layer!"
It was a genuine Tier-3 Spirit Worm, and it seemed to sense these cultivators. It immediately raised its tail, with the needle-like whiskers tensed, flashing with a faint light, like crossbow arrows pointing at the cultivators who were closest.
The cultivators hastily retreated. Owen lightly raised his hand, and the Tier-3 Spirit Worm immediately calmed down, wriggling on the ground as if begging for something.
Owen smiled slightly, took out a special earthenware jar, and opened it upside down. A vortex of spiritual light flew out of the jar, attracting the worm to fly up in the air, its body shrinking continuously until it was finally collected into the jar.
This was the insect nest that Ken had taught him to refine. It had a special divided void inside, which was very suitable for nurturing spirit insects.
The other impoverished cultivators stared dumbfounded at the scene, "A Tier-3! Just taken away like that?"
There should have been a fierce battle, but they had never heard of a Tier-3 Spirit Worm being so docile before.
For a moment, there was a small disturbance within the team, which quickly quieted down. Most of the impoverished cultivators looked at Owen differently, while Bart was secretly pleased.
However, a few with more peculiar thoughts wondered if it was because the spirit insects in the Zombie Cave were different from those found elsewhere and were inherently easier to subdue.
As if able to read their hearts, Owen turned around and smiled, "Anyone want to give it a try?"
Immediately, several people raised their hands.
Owen smiled again, leading the team forward, "Follow me."
Among those who raised their hands, two were from the Third Great Boundary and one from the Fourth Great Realm. It had not necessarily demonstrated their disbelief in Owen’s abilities; most of them were just genuinely curious.
The man named Glenn Mitchell that Owen had his eyes on had been quiet the whole time, seemingly inconspicuous among the crowd.
When Bart approached these disciples from impoverished families, he only mentioned mutual help and introduced them to a "dependable backing" - someone from a similar background who had risen to a high position in the Imperial Court. He assured them that they wouldn’t be humiliated, and they were free to come and go as they pleased. If they were unhappy, they could leave on the spot.
After revealing part of the backing’s identity, the disciples secretly inquired about Owen Bertram, found out that he was indeed from a humble background, and then gathered them together.
As for the cohesion of this small group, it was very weak.
These people had only temporarily gathered under Bart’s contact after arriving in the capital, realizing that it was difficult to make a move alone. Each one still had their pride deep in their hearts.
Owen led the group to find another Tier-3 Spirit Worm on the first layer - a place known as a "wasteland," where even the most experienced insect hunters wouldn’t waste their time. It was widely believed that everything in this layer was generic and not worth a high price.
This was a green mantis snake insect, half resembling a mantis, and half a centipede-like snake. It meekly lowered its head before Owen. A cultivator from the Fourth Great Realm suddenly jumped out, "I’ll give it a try!"
He fully demonstrated the characteristics of a poor cultivator: being impoverished! He didn’t even have a single Magical Instrument and used his spiritual energy to create a gust of wind around him before punching the insect’s head.
The insect let out a strange hiss, raised its head arrogantly, swung its six-bladed arms, and launched six ice-cold energy blades that flew out, causing the surrounding temperature to plummet sharply.
Being from the Fourth Great Realm, the cultivator had agile movement skills, and as he dodged, he released a spirit talisman from his body. The enlarged spiritual light surrounded him like a bubble, acting as a guardian.
However, the insect seemed quite skilled. The six icy energy blades flew around the cultivator and shattered without hitting him, releasing a large amount of cold air. The cultivator shivered, feeling that the speed of his spiritual energy circulation had slowed down a bit. The whiskers on the insect’s tail were just about to shoot out, and the cultivator had no confidence in being able to dodge in time. Panic-stricken, he shouted, "Sir, save me!"
