Chapter 235 - 233 Soldier Bee
Chapter 235: Chapter 233 Soldier Bee
It now appears that the Devouring Element Bees Swarm originally built their nest on the Bamboo Slope, but they were swept away by the incursion of their adversaries. However, the enemies didn’t catch the swarm. The swarm then proceeded to the River Water, finding an even greater treasure mine.
The unnamed "lord" behind the planning mentioned a great plot intertwined with this treasure mine.
Upon arriving at Casterly County, Owen Bertram feels for the first time that he’s in a "leading" position, having discovered the treasure mine before anyone else, hence potentially thwarting their "great plot".
Owen Bertram then asked Little Loach: What benefits do you gain from devouring these Devouring Element Bees?
The underlying meaning here was whether he intended to share some of the benefits with Elder Brother.
Little Loach struggles to adequately explain: I need to devour the entire swarm, including the Bee Queen in the beehive, to determine the resulting gains.
Owen Bertram is seriously considering the feasibility of this "hunt".
Keep in mind that a single Devouring Element Bee differs greatly from a swarm. A swarm of Devouring Element Bees can hunt Tire-4 Demon Beasts! Moreover, these pack-creature beasts are extremely difficult to handle. To date, the true nature of the Bee Queen, including any special Divine Powers, remains a secret.
Little Loach’s strategy of hiding within the Lava Lake, slowly whittling down the Devouring Element Bees Swarm, is completely correct.
Perhaps this was Little Loach’s hunting instinct kicking in.
Also, Devouring Element Bees don’t swim any slower than Little Loach in the River Water. If a direct conflict were to take place, retreating to the Lava Lake would be the only means of self-defense because plunging into the River Water would just result in becoming a target.
Owen Bertram, having no better options, relinquishes control of his body, allowing Little Loach to continue implementing this strategy. He observes from afar, ready to intervene if anything unexpected should occur.
The Lava Lake’s tides rise and fall about once every half a Shichen (1 hour) and each time, Little Loach manages to subdue considerable amounts of the Devouring Element Bees!
Outside, daybreak has arrived.
Owen Bertram, worried about Little Loach, dives into River Water, following the underwater caves, and positions himself not far from the Lava Lake. If Little Loach gets into any danger, he would be able to provide immediate assistance.
The Devouring Element Bees Swarm has already decreased by sixty percent since Little Loach had first infiltrated!
...
In George Estate, the moment it lights up outside, Eric Reed stands outside Owen Bertram’s door, "awaiting orders." However, everyone under Owen Bertram’s command knew this fellow was just there to put Lord Prescott under surveillance.
Everyone has already had breakfast, yet there’s still no movement from Owen Bertram’s room.
Eric Reed has a faint feeling that something isn’t right. He wants to knock on the door, but a sturdy figure blocks him.
David says impassively: "Lord Prescott had an insight last night, he is in seclusion, no one is allowed to disturb him."
"But..." Eric Reed hesitates: "Isn’t it irresponsible for Owen Prescott to seclude himself at this critical moment of the investigation? Shouldn’t he be summoned sooner..."
David snorts coldly, eyeing him with a harsh look, and retorts word by word: "I said, no one is allowed to disturb him! Dare to try? Even if the adversaries came, I wouldn’t hesitate to kill them!"
A frightening knife Qi, bringing the sound of bladed gust, arises from below David, instantly engulfing Eric Reed!
Eric Reed shudders under David’s gaze. This is a trusted aide of Master Lane, he would dare to kill me!
Eric Reed steadily retreats, laughing and saying, "How dare I defy David..."
David is the kind of person that is annoying when you don’t know him well, but once he becomes your friend, he can be quite reliable.
...
While Brother is seriously snacking on popcorn, Owen Bertram is instead curious: Why does this lava lake have a tide?
The span of the lava lake can be seen at a glance, roughly four or five miles in radius with no other entrances or exits. One side is a rock wall, and the other is a water wall.
However, the water wall just sticks beside the lava lake, when the tide drops, one can see that the side of the water wall bounding the lava lake is, after all, some kind of rock.
As the tide falls once again, Little Loach springs out, but Owen Bertram secretly observes the lava lake: he finds all the magma just sinks, could there be something beneath the lake?
The number of Devouring Element Bees has greatly reduced, so Brother must now try to make the bees fall into the water.
This time, there was a bit of a rush, when the tail lifted the tide, it accidentally exposed the water surface. Owen Bertram secretly exclaimed that it was not good. Sure enough, from the giant beehive on top of the boulder, a jet of air was suddenly shot out, followed by a slight tremor of the hive, revealing a myriad of colorful light mists.
Owen Bertram decisively orders Brother: Dive!
Little Loach hesitated a bit, but Elder Brother’s tone was undeniable. Finally, Elder Brother’s household status was acknowledged, Little Loach swallowed a mouthful of saliva, then quickly shrunk his body, whooshing towards the depths of the Lava Lake.
Just as Little Loach dived, a new group of Element-devouring Bees crawled out of the hexagonal exits of the beehive aimed at the Lava Lake. Totally different from the previous worker bees, these fellows are larger and more slender.
They swooped down, their backsides facing the lava lake, extending out black stings!
Then they uniformly twitched their tails, and with a whoosh their poison stings shot towards the Lava Lake.
The stings were two feet long, some of them hit the adjacent rock wall, penetrating it leaving behind only black holes!
After a round, these soldier bees flew a circle in the air, and new poison stings grew from their tails. Then, as before, they once again fired at the lava lake.
Little Loach hid in the depth of the lava lake, carefully avoiding them. The stings penetrated dozens of feet deep, gradually losing power, and then slowly being melted by magma.
This batch of tens of thousands of soldier bees in total fired five rounds, then exhausted, pitter-pattering into the lava lake.
Without Elder Brother’s orders, Little Loach swooshed up, its body quickly swelling, then opened its mouth to swallow the soldier bees along with a lot of molten lava.
Very good, very good, this Bee Queen is considerate, delivering new food.
So it went, several tides risen and fallen, and there were only a few devouring element bees left. The Bee Queen in the hive seemed to become frantic, a huge amount of light mist surged from the hive, hatching a large number of bee eggs at once. Not only were there soldier bees, but also a large number of worker bees.
The soldier bees swooped down first, neatly sweeping over the lava lake, then the worker bees flew down.
Little Loach has long had the experience. As long as these devouring element bees dare not enter the lava, they can’t do anything to him. After several tides rises and falls, there were only a few newly born devouring element bees left.
The Bee Queen finally learned her lesson, after hatching a new batch of soldier bees and worker bees, she mixed them together. When the tide fell, they all flew down together; the worker bees went to the isolated island, and the soldier bees stayed above the lava lake. When they noticed the movement of the magma below, they would immediately fire a round of poison stings.
This did suppress Little Loach, Brother was furious underneath, those "popcorns" were not far away but he dared not take the risk to eat them.
The not-so-smart Little Loach asked Elder Brother for advice. Owen Bertram observed that the current batch of soldier bees was almost depleted, and then said to Brother: "Back in Elder Brother’s hometown, there is a way to get rid of bees, that is... burning. And you may not know, those unhatched bee pupae, after being burned, are delicious..."
Please stop right there, Little Loach feels that his saliva can no longer be stopped.
