Chapter 102: Chapter 101: On Demons (Part 1)
Little Loach slipped back into the Hunshui River, buried himself at the river bottom, and closed his two eyes.
Owen Bertram incessantly stressed: Don’t spare any benefits this time, send them all over to me, I have a use for them.
There was no response from Little Loach, Owen Bertram twitched his mouth, not knowing if the second brother had heard him or not.
Owen Bertram also went to sleep. In his dreams he was still thinking about forging the Five-toothed Battleship, but despite his best efforts, he couldn’t squeeze out a single Spiritual Flame from the Gourd Responding Items-- this feeling of emptiness and helplessness was truly heartbreaking for a man.
Suddenly, a warm current surged from Little Loach, as warm as if he were in a furnace.
Owen Bertram’s eyes shot open. That massive warm current had already merged into the Gourd Responding Items, hissing as the Spiritual Flame ignited within the Gourd Responding Items.
Owen Bertram revealed a slight smile, feeling that he had regained his abilities!
Then he attached his soul unhurriedly and after investigating, helplessly discovered that a new Fire Pill had formed in Little Loach’s throat, not inferior to the previous one in any way – elder brother’s earnest warning was all treated as a breeze passing by your ears, huh?
He controlled Little Loach and found a Mechanical Dao Soldier sitting on the river bed. With a curl of its two Whiskers, it retrieved two pieces of Dandelion Killer, and then returned the way it came.
Having already known the waterway, even if it was upstream, it took less than a Shichen (2 hours) to return to the small stream outside of the Taoist Temple.
It wasn’t even dawn yet, Owen Bertram had run another trip to bring Little Loach back.
Owen Bertram then impatiently refined the Dandelion Killer, integrating it into the Five-toothed Battleship.
Before, the progress was slow, the forging of the Five-toothed Battleship was only half done. After the Dandelion Killer was incorporated into it, Owen Bertram distinctly felt that this material was truly extraordinary, its power even surpassed the original Refining Diagram Records by thirty percent.
But there is not enough time to complete it today, as dawn has broken.
Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow got breakfast from the Government Official, when she came back she found Owen Bertram with two dark circles under his eyes, she suggested indirectly: "Drink more wolfberries."
Owen Bertram: "..."
...
With the encouragement of yesterday’s afternoon harvest, early this morning, Lord Gordon and the others were full of energy!
For this, they unprecedentedly promised rewards: a Military Officer who finds Dandelion Killer, depending on the size, can get five to twenty, varying amounts of Spirit Jade!
The officers were inspired, and their enthusiasm was much higher today, with the search area constantly expanding.
They dug holes everywhere on land, and the Mechanical Dao Soldiers quietly walked in the water. The appearance of this Dandelion Killer was indeed irregular, and in the morning, the officers made no gains, and the Mechanical Dao Soldiers walked through three small rivers empty-handed.
At noon, the Mechanical Dao Soldiers came to the small river where Owen Bertram first collected pearls.
The officers had already started eating. The morale that was aroused in the morning has already drained away. So many people, digging for a whole morning and finding nothing, there’s probably no Dandelion Killer left.
Such a high reward, it can be seen, but not won.
The Mechanical Dao Soldier saw a corpse of a Fierce Fish, about six feet long, it didn’t know how it died, its flesh and blood had long been clean by other monsters in the river, leaving only white bones.
It passed bye, inadvertently scattered the skeleton, revealing a flash of Radiance. The Mechanical Dao Soldier went over, wiped away the mud on the bottom of the river with its hand, and there quietly lay a piece of Dandelion Killer about nine feet long!
...
In the Taoist Temple, Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow was eating lunch and chatting with Owen Bertram: "Do you know how big is the biggest Dandelion Killer ever found? It is reported that 160 years ago, in Changshan Prefecture, a small sect was destroyed by the Magic Wave.
The Horizon Bureau subsequently deployed a large number of personnel who searched for a whole five days and found Dandelion Killer weighing forty-seven pounds and five taels seven coins.
Such a harvest made the Horizon Bureau overjoyed, they believed they had found all the Dandelion Killer, and then they withdrew.
Ten days later, a disciple of this sect who had been on an outside journey, ran back crying. He knelt before the statue of the Ancestor, banged his forehead and shattered the green brick beneath it, revealing a Dandelion Killer.
"This slab of Dandelion Killer is seven feet long, weighing up to one hundred and forty pounds!"
"Later on, the Cultivation World of the Wood Dynasty engaged in a struggle for this slab of Dandelion Killer. The final price was said to have reached a staggering three million Spirit Jades!"
The total amount of Spiritual Jade produced in the entire Wood Dynasty in a year might not even reach three million.
"That disciple, who initially had average talent and cultivation, relied on these three million Spirit Jades to purchase all kinds of precious spiritual pills and broke through to become a Grandmaster in a single leap. He even managed to rebuild his sect and establish himself as an Overlord!"
Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow wore a look of longing. Even though the Devin Clan was very rich, the myth of becoming rich overnight would make anyone envious, wishing they could be in that place.
Owen Bertram dismissed the tale with a sneer. Just as he was about to point out the logical flaws in the story, the Mechanical Dao Soldiers noted the appearance of a nine-foot-long Dandelion Killer.
"Hey, hey, are you stupefied by the story?" Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow noticed him standing dumbfounded and used her chopsticks to knock on the table.
Owen Bertram quickly lowered his head to eat, hiding his lapse: "Yes, those are three million Spirit Jades after all."
"Exactly."
Ava Bertram was clutching a bun that was half the size of her head. She opened her mouth wide, made a show for quite a while, and then stuffed it all in one go. She struggled to swallow it, then chimed in: "With that much money, we could buy lots and lots of delicious food!"
Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow readily agreed: "We could even buy all the delicious food in the entire Wood Dynasty!"
Both the girls appeared starry-eyed.
Seeing their enthusiasm, Owen Bertram was left dumbstruck. Could they really fantasize to this extent?
Knock, knock, knock—
This time it was Owen Bertram’s turn to use his chopsticks to knock on the table, jolting Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow back to reality: "I have a serious question for you. Are there different types of demons?"
This question had been bothering Owen Bertram for a while.
"In this battle, those common demons had extremely low self-control. They might possess wisdom, but they underwent a Demonic Transformation as soon as they were afflicted by evil energy. And their violent and brutal instincts were almost irrepressible."
"But that Demon Spirit was extremely sensible and could conceal its demon form, lurking among the Human Race."
"What’s the difference between these two?"
Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow patted his shoulder, expressing both relief and admiration: "You’re thinking now, good job. You’ve actually noticed the difference between these two. Very impressive, I’m really pleased. Seems like my efforts on grooming you haven’t been wasted."
Owen Bertram glanced at her, feeling somewhat humiliated.
This foolish girl, she actually thinks she taught me how to think?
Also, the difference between these two beings was so gigantic that anyone with eyes would notice, right?
Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow continued: "There is a strict hierarchy among the demons."
"Those ordinary demons, we call them Demon Soldiers, pretty much the same as ordinary soldiers in our army."
"Above them, there are higher-ranked demons like the Demon General, Demon Spirit, Demon Master, Demon General, etc. Demon Soldiers are at the First Great Realm level, with varying strengths.
Demon Generals possess at least the power of the Second Level, although it’s not an absolute certainty. Typically, a First Level Cultivator would struggle to battle a Demon Soldier alone. Similarly, most Second Level Cultivators lose against Demon Generals."
Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow developed a somber expression: "The demon that Lord Algernon transformed into was a Demon General — he was originally at the Third Great Boundary. After being transformed into a demon, although he was a Demon General level, he was tougher than many at the Third Great Boundary! Moreover, at this level, he could already command ordinary Demon Soldiers, but he still couldn’t reach the extent of hiding his demonic nature with reason."
