Chapter 24: Driver, I’m Already On Board

Kirishima Touka felt there was an indescribable quality about Luo Yun, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. “I’m leaving.” Luo Yun said. “You should be able to handle the rest yourself.” The arrival of Jason and Nick was an unexpected incident tonight, but since he resolved the situation in front of Kirishima Touka, he luckily earned a chance at a fated opportunity. Ghouls weren’t strong, so Luo Yun made a small profit. But the value he could extract from them moving forward might not be as much. The café still reeked of blood, and the ghoul Jason’s body was conspicuously noticeable. Out of fear, Kasumigaoka Utaha and Sakurajima Mai hurried to Luo Yun’s side in two strides, closing the distance so much they were practically glued to him. They appeared calm on the surface but were utterly panicked inside. For girls to face something like this and not be scared senseless was already remarkable. “What’s wrong?” Luo Yun asked. Kasumigaoka Utaha, having been through this once before, had some immunity, while Sakurajima Mai’s mind was consumed with what just happened—ghouls, Qingtong Shu, demon hunters—terms she’d only seen on TV, now unfolding vividly before her eyes. “Are you a demon hunter too? Do you usually fight those… demon creatures?” Sakurajima Mai asks. She’d already been through enough, and thanks to her unique condition and experience as a debuted celebrity, Sakurajima Mai adapted to new things quickly. Though Jason’s rage initially made her legs weak, she’d now regained her composure and even found it somewhat intriguing. Kasumigaoka Utaha felt the same. Back at the editorial office, she thought Luo Yun was just a small-time failed writer, but she never imagined he carried so much mystery. This sparked ideas for the protagonist of her next novel. Kasumigaoka Utaha was a highly assertive woman. Despite being attacked by ghouls and battered by declining novel sales, she wouldn’t give up so easily. “This is just the beginning; there’ll be more to come.” Gaining power was only the first step; obtaining strength to protect himself and those around him from threats was the final step. But Luo Yun spoke lightly, not weighed down by too much. After all, Agulola hadn’t really died and could be reborn when the time was right. However, to the two girls, his words took on a different meaning. “I never thought I’d one day be protected by a younger junior, so keep it up.” Sakurajima Mai smiles gently, though her heart aches slightly. She’d only been troubled by her own issues, never considering that others were fighting for the world. “Junior-kun, you’ve really been through a lot, haven’t you?” Kasumigaoka Utaha also shows deep concern for this boy a year younger than her. Luo Yun didn’t understand where their sudden maternal instincts came from. “By the way, Miss Kirishima… you’re a ghoul too?” Sakurajima Mai looks at the purple-haired girl who just finished her call, asking with a mix of fear and unfamiliarity. She’d been to Anteiku Café a few times before, and the staff’s attitude and service were excellent. Yet this happened. “Yes.” Kirishima Touka’s expression was dejected, her head lowered, avoiding eye contact. Ghouls didn’t have high status among demons and were objects of fear and avoidance to humans. She once had a very close friend, but after learning she was a ghoul, they gradually drifted apart. Since then, Kirishima Touka had been very reluctant to reveal her secret to outsiders. “With something like this happening, the security team won’t do anything to you when they arrive, will they?” “Eh? This… I don’t think so. After all, I’m a registered demon, and I undergo regular check-ups every month.” “That’s a relief then. After all, Miss Kirishima is a good person. It’d be bad if you got tangled up with bad people… Well, see you then. I’ll come back again.” “See… see you.” Kirishima Touka mechanically waves at the black-haired girl. After leaving the street, a bustling atmosphere washes over them. The sound of police sirens echoed in the distance. Just then, a bus stopped at the sign, but neither Kasumigaoka Utaha nor Sakurajima Mai had any intention of boarding. After tonight, who’d want to go home alone? “You’re not getting on? The driver’s already urging.” At some point, Luo Yun was already on the bus, his right hand on the railing, looking oddly at the two girls still standing outside. It was almost time for the buses to stop running. If they didn’t catch this one, they’d have to walk or take a taxi. But everyone knew about Japan’s taxis. One ride could cost as much as a fancy meal. The two girls looked at Luo Yun on the bus. Kasumigaoka Utaha: “…” Sakurajima Mai: “…” Then, they silently boarded, flanking Luo Yun front and back like two guardian deities, making a few men on the bus green with envy. After all, Kasumigaoka Utaha and Sakurajima Mai’s looks were campus goddess-level, and the men wished they could toss the reluctant Luo Yun off the bus and take his place. …
