Chapter 23: Come If You Dare
The military sabre in Luo Yun’s hand materialised as particles, clashing with the scale kagune capable of smashing walls. The delicate blade met the sharp kagune, sparking fiercely, yet Luo Yun’s body didn’t retreat. He merely flipped the blade, its sharp edge slicing a circle around the kagune-covered arm. The ghoul’s attack was blocked by the sudden blade, the recoil jarring his muscles with pain. But after the shock, just as he raged and prepared to swing his fist, he saw the sabre move as if alive, circling his wrist. The sabre, having completed its orbit, adhered to Luo Yun’s hand. He then kicked the ghoul’s waist, sending him flying into the air. Thud! The ghoul crashed through an entire row of tables and chairs, his back slamming into the wall, shaking the whole room. He stared in disbelief at his severed hand, blood gushing like a fountain, staining the floor and his suit red. His black eyes had turned into black-red compound eyes, glaring fiercely at Luo Yun. “ohhhhhhhh~~~” The pervert nearby swayed his body as if in ecstasy. His feet were wet with blood. The blond ghoul, using his other arm, pierced through the pervert’s back, stirring inside as blood kept flowing. Yet the grievous wound, fatal and agonising to any normal person, only brought a sickly flush to the pervert’s face. If he were a tall, glamorous woman, the scene might have been alluring, but alas, he was just a psychological deviant. “Nick, sorry, I got a bit carried away.” “No worries, I enjoyed it.” The man touching his cheek cooed coyly. “Jason, looks like this pretty boy is a demon hunter.” “A demon hunter, huh… I’ve hated demon hunters my whole life, especially a reckless kid like this. Today, I’m dragging you to my hobby room!” With that, Jason lunged like a ferocious tiger, deep purple scales covering half his body like a turtle’s shell. As if unaffected by his severed arm, he thrust his spike-shaped kagune toward Luo Yun’s head. “…” Luo Yun stayed silent, watching him coldly. To be fair, Jason was far stronger than the previous two ghouls, but he was still just an S-rank ghoul—only comparable to mid-tier beastmen in average strength. Against high-tier beastmen or elders capable of divine beast transformation, he’d be utterly crushed. Divine beast transformations surpassed pureblood vampires, and even a vampire’s contracted otherworldly beast, if not powerful enough, was just a slightly fiercer pet before a divine beast. Thus, ghouls ranked low in this world, mere cannon fodder. Jason’s charge seemed painfully slow in Luo Yun’s eyes. Blue particle streams appeared in his hand, and with a slight flick of the blade toward the kagune, an invisible shockwave spread toward Jason. Jason felt as if he’d crashed into a tank. His sturdy scales shattered, his body nearly collapsed, covered in lacerations. His earlier arrogance vanished. The blond ghoul, unsure if alive or dead, lost consciousness and collapsed on the ground. Nick’s mouth formed an ‘o’, and Kirishima Touka mirrored him. Having dealt with them before, the girl knew Jason’s strength. Without a demon hunter, it would take a six-man security team to subdue him. Yet, in less than a minute, this man her age effortlessly took Jason down. The whole process was smooth and decisive. No wonder he faced ghouls without flinching—he wasn’t afraid of these troublemakers at all. Being a ghoul herself, Kirishima Touka’s recovery was strong. Though her back was bloodied, her wounds had mostly healed. She stood, leaning on the counter, and asked Luo Yun: “Who are you? A demon hunter? Or an exorcist?” Those humans with professional skills were elites at repelling demons. Especially on Genkami Island, where tales of demon hunters abounded. The Dread Witch, the Immortal Maiden who could shatter the earth with her fists, the Onmyoji using talismans, and more. Luo Yun looked at her but didn’t answer, stepping over to crush the transmitter and shaking his head: “Time to call the police. Let the security team handle the rest.” “Oh, you’re right, we should call the police!” Kirishima Touka snapped to, grabbing her phone, only to see Nick had already slipped out the door. When she chased after him, his trace was gone. “Damn it! He got away!” “You’re not going after him?” Looking at the unfazed Luo Yun in the café, Kirishima Touka asked. Luo Yun shrugged. He wasn’t a demon hunter, nor did he have tracking skills. Chasing a ghoul indistinguishable from a human would be fruitless even by morning. Kirishima Touka said seriously: “These two belong to an organisation called Qingtong Shu…
