Chapter 395: Chapter 0395: Understated Luxury
"Stop talking."
Li Wenxuan glared at Tang Ming with gritted teeth, wishing she had known how embarrassing this would be—she would have rather died than bring Tang Ming here.
"Hahaha, indeed quite amusing," Jack laughed heartily and said generously,
"Don’t worry, I’m paying for everything today, and I’ll make sure you all eat your fill."
"Really?" Tang Ming’s eyes lit up, and he said excitedly,
"At first, I thought you were not a nice guy, my judgment was off. I didn’t expect you to be so generous; I was rude before."
"No problem, no problem, you’ll slowly get to know me."
Jack waved his hand and looked at Li Wenxuan, who was silently hanging her head, with pride.
"Waiter, French baked Kobe shrimp, grass-fed Côte de Boeuf from France, small filets." As soon as Jack finished speaking, Tang Ming quickly chimed in, reminding,
"Oh, and add a bottle of Richard Hennessy cognac. Ten of each, please, and open the cognac at the table for decanting!"
"What?" The waiter was stunned upon hearing this since just one bottle of that cognac cost eighteen thousand.
"Didn’t catch that?"
Tang Ming frowned slightly, dissatisfied, and glanced at the waiter, "Repeat it for me."
"Yes, a bottle of Richard Hennessy cognac..."
The waiter quickly started to speak, seeing the chance to earn a commission.
"No need to repeat, just remember to bring ten of each."
Tang Ming cut off the waiter, having only needed to confirm the cognac.
"Um..." The waiter looked embarrassingly at Jack, whose corners of his mouth were twitching.
Jack had not expected Tang Ming to be so ruthless, ordering for everyone and every item being more than twenty thousand—for ten servings...
Although it hurt, Jack had to stand by his boast, even if on his knees, and he pretended to be generous and said,
"Don’t look at me; since he ordered, go ahead and place the order, right?"
Seeing this, Li Wenxuan’s eyes shone with a peculiar light. She hadn’t expected Tang Ming to counter so sharply, as if his previous unsophisticated appearance was just a facade to lull Jack into complacency, resulting in Jack bleeding money this time.
"Since we’ve finished ordering, we’ll just then..." Jack took a deep breath, gesturing as he spoke.
"Who said we’ve finished ordering?"
Tang Ming interrupted Jack, looking confusedly at the group of men behind him, "Aren’t you guys ordering food?"
"You, you just ordered ten servings; wasn’t that for them as well?"
Upon hearing this, Jack’s face turned dark.
"That was for myself; ten servings might not even be enough for me," Tang Ming glanced at Jack disdainfully and said irritably,
"If it wasn’t for saving you money, I could easily order another ten servings."
Hearing that, Jack nearly choked on his own blood, and Li Wenxuan’s mouth twitched as she struggled to contain her laughter. It was too harsh—this was a plot to bankrupt Jack.
"Brother, what would you like to order?"
Tang Ming turned to the man beside him and smiled as he asked.
"I, I don’t know French either, so I’ll have the same as you, but just one serving for me."
The chubby guy sitting next to Tang Ming said awkwardly, shaking his head, then he looked at Jack and asked, "Is that okay?"
"I..."
Jack’s face had turned green. He wanted to ask the others not to order the cognac, but before he could speak, Tang Ming already said,
"Relax, one can tell Jack is a young talent among men, the most promising person among you all; he won’t mind this bit of expense."
"If it’s not expensive, then I’ll have the same as you."
The chubby kid nodded repeatedly.
Then, the other men followed suit, adding another nine portions in total.
By the time the waiter went to place the order, Jack’s hand under the table had begun to twitch uncontrollably.
He intended to show off, but suddenly he was in the hole for four to five hundred thousand, and the showing off hurt him bad.
Besides, he never really respected these classmates to begin with, yet he had spent several hundred thousand on them, which felt deeply unjust.
"Jack, are you okay?"
Li Wenxuan feigned concern as she asked.
"No, no issue, as long as everyone is happy, that’s good."
Jack forced out a smile uglier than crying.
When the drinks were served, each pop of a bottle made Jack’s heart ache, and he almost ended up with a heart attack from the stress.
Once dining began, the others realized the price of the wine Tang Ming had ordered was steep, and no one held back as they ate and drank merrily.
Jack sat with a grim face, eating the food in front of him that tasted like wax, filled with anger and resentment.
After the third round of drinks, Jack calmed down and turned to Tang Ming, saying:
"Mister Tang, your clothes seem pretty casual. What do you do for a living? Xuan’er here is an elite returning from overseas, and your outfit just doesn’t seem to match her at all."
"Oh no."
Upon hearing this, Li Wenxuan sighed; Jack really had started to attack based on Tang Ming’s attire.
"What’s wrong with what I’m wearing?" Tang Ming, having finished ten portions of food by himself and sipping on his drink, curiously asked, "Your clothes look nice; what brand are they?"
Jack sat up straight, gave his clothes a tug, and said proudly:
"This is Armani, a set costs over a hundred thousand."
"Armani? That’s not very expensive, is it?" Tang Ming scoffed dismissively and muttered to himself:
"Of course, that doesn’t rule out some idiot who spends an unreasonable amount of money on it."
"Who, who are you calling an idiot?" Jack was instantly enraged upon hearing this.
"Sorry, I just think that a piece of clothing should only cost twenty or thirty thousand, which isn’t even enough for a meal here. If you think that’s expensive, you must have spent over a million, then that’s being an idiot and a sucker," Tang Ming quickly apologized, speaking earnestly:
"But you in that outfit, it’s only worth a bit over twenty thousand, surely you can’t tell that you’re an idiot."
"Hmph, that’s more like it," Jack snorted, then felt something was off.
"Hahaha!"
While Jack hadn’t caught on, the others couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
A male classmate, tipsy from the alcohol, slammed the table and exclaimed:
"Jack, he’s saying that you wearing that outfit don’t look like an idiot, which means that you actually are one, doesn’t it?"
Jack finally caught on and his face turned ashen. Clenching his teeth, he stared at Tang Ming, ready to explode with rage.
"I didn’t mean that at all; I just finished eating your food, how could I call you names?" Tang Ming waved his hands in denial, then lamented:
"However, for our level of consumption, that outfit really isn’t too pricey."
"Hmph, so what about what you’re wearing?"
Jack demanded with a steely face.
"In our circle, there’s a kind of low-key luxury that nouveau riche can never experience."
Tang Ming took a sip of his drink, looked at Jack’s watch, and said: "That Golden Rolex of yours isn’t bad. But I suppose you wouldn’t know Cartier with your level of understanding, would you?"
"What Cartier?"
Jack really hadn’t heard the name before, and everyone else was just as clueless, even Li Wenxuan looked utterly confused.
